FABAIC......so who's going?

Wish I could see her face....Megs is quite excited as well!

I am in TX now. I moved here about 6 months ago. I'm going back to Jacksonville to work for the month of May and go to FABAIC.

I was wondering, has anyone else signed a child up for the kids classes? My 6 year old son has shown some interest in face painting and I was just wondering how that works. I know it mentions on there the I should not be in the class with him cause I may be a distraction, but I would be a little nervous about just dropping him off at a class and leaving to take another class on my own.

I don't know about doing it at 6? a lil young maybe? not for wanting to paint but for a convention where he would yes be with other children but kinda on his own so to speak. I took my daughter in 2009 but she was 9 1/2 and she loved it. In 2009 there were several other children her age so it made it more fun for her to hang out with friends instead of being with me all day. She enjoyed her classes and that bit of freedom, but again at 6?? I don't know that I would have let her do it, especially since alot of the modles will be for the most part nude...painted but still nude to a degree and I don't know how you feel about your son being exposed to that.

I will tell you the nudity did not phase Angel in the slightest.......she actually thought some of the painted outfits were real clothes....lol To be honest all you truly see is the amazing artwork...the lack of clothing doesn't come into play, but of course that is a personal decision to be made as to the appropriateness for a 6yr old.

She will be there again this year, and I know from speaking to several people on the forum who are bringing their kids...there will be people her age to make it a much more fun experience

As for your son...herm. As a parent of a boy, I would be fine dropping him in the class, as I don't think they'd let him just go and walk around without me, and I would be fine with partial nudity (as the human body is perfectly natural) but personally I don't know if I'd be able to concentrate on another class fully. I'd be wondering what he was doing, would I make it out of the class I was in on time to get him, etc. I dunno if I'm making sense but I'd probably not bring mine at that age only because I don't think I'd get the most out of it for my own comfort.
Btw, I don't mean that to sound as selfish as it does and I would totally bring an older child if he wanted to go.

Oh for the record, the whole partial nudity is extremely partial. I'm talk'in a sticker on the boobs and a thong and not painted. Just standing out in the common areas while the artist is painting. I know a lot of people were taken back by that last year. It's not that big of a deal to me since my kids are too young to go, but I'm putting it out there so you know before you go.

I have painted many times in public, where the model was wearing nothing but a thong. And all the children loved to watch. They thought that is was amazing with all the colours and the transformation to either a fantasy landscape, clothing or whatever. Some even wanted to be painted them self. (I told them you have to be 18 for that).
In my opinion there is a big difference depending on if the nudity is part of an adult movie (or show) - something I would not let smaller children see, since it often don't reflect reality - and bodypaint. As Lynnie say: a body is perfectly natural.
I don't say that we all should walk around naked - it will also be way to cold here in Denmark.. - but unless the parents start freaking out if they see a naked breast, I don't think the children will get traumas over it.

Thanks for your advice! It's not so much that I would be worried about the nudity. My boys are big momma's boys and it is hard for me to do anything without them finding me or following me around, so they have both walked in the bathroom on me a few times. Needless to say they know that boys and girls are different and what those differences are. I really don't even know that they would be shocked to see a naked female standing there getting painted other then to be amazed by the actual painting in itself.
But I kind of agree with you Lynnie. My biggest concern would be worrying about him and what he's doing. Maybe I will just wait another year and see if he's still interested at that time.

Ok ladies, from the post I am seeing that a good number of us are going to be at FABAIC..anyone know an exact count???

Here me out.... I just had a thought that perhaps as a sign of unity among FPF members we could look to do a collaborative competition piece at the convention. Something that would combine all of our talents and speak to the inclusiveness and the cohesiveness as our forum as a goup of diverse artist.

I think it could be something really special.

This sounds so awesome!!!! We could even do sketches and vote for our favorite and have jobs assigned before we ever arrive at FABAIC. We could compete in the guild competition. Some could have the head dress made for the piece, some that felt less comfortable could do just base work. This would be so much fun and probably draw us even closer as a group. I think this could be the start of a tradition we could repeat every year. Plus with our numbers, we could get a lot more done than one artist could.

OR even have a theme and everyone does a bit of 'themselves' on it? Nahh...may look too 'bits & bobs' but I like the idea in theory! I don't know what my teaching schedule is or what they have me doing yet exactly, but I SO want to be a part of that.....very meaningful for me as I feel such a loyalty/unity here!

That is an amazing idea, Tamara. I think it would be a really wild experience.

From taking a peek through this and the other thread in the events section I think there might be about 10 people coming. Perhaps more. Does that sound close?

I think we could do this two ways, after voting, as was mentioned.

1. Have people do layers. Some lay a base coat. Others come in with the essential designs. Then others do the details and finishing. Organized well this could really produce incredible results.
This gets squishy when it comes to time and deciding who does what. Some people underestimate their skills and others want to do what might be beyond their skills. How would we, then, decide who does what?

2. Have an abstract design (as voted on) and have people work parts. That may not make a smooth design but it might make for happier artists.

Just thoughts.

Great points Lynnie! I would be happy to play even the smallest part...pat a sponge on a knee just to be able to say I was with 'the gang'!! LOL

I have 4 different full body designs I'm working on right now, so I'm willing to go along with whatever you popular kids wanna do! I am thrilled to just be able to meet you all!!

This is an awesome idea! I'm very new, but would love to give it a go....What about something that symbolizes unity...like a globe or puzzle pieces maybe each of us doing our piece somehow...Not sure. But I think it's a great idea.

I am so glad you guys are on board with this. I see this being bigger than anything any of us could imagine. I am really looking forward to this experience. Let the creativity begin. So Thank you for being so receptive to my idea......now let just hope another forum doesn't get wind of it and try to 1 up us.

And if they did it would just make for more fun and creative energy and friendly competition!! Bring it BABY! We are armed (with brushes) and dangerous (quite possibly to ourselves but hey...whatevs!! LOL)!!!!

I'm in! I wanted to join in on a competition just so I could be a part of something! I think it's a great idea and being new I wouldn't feel too intimidated cause I could just do a base part or something small to help.

I really like the idea of theming it for unity, and I also like the idea of it being in the battle of the guilds thingy.

Hemmmm...how do we want to design this? Each draw something up and then we'll put it up here and vote?

How about a theme that allows us to be different but still conceptually cohesive....for instance a storybookland theme. We could each take a piece from our favorite childhood stories and design them in a way the images could flow from one into another. Like

The Wizard fo Oz could easily flow into an Alice in Wonderland orrrrrrrrr a movie theme like the dark imagery of a harry potter movie could flow right into a "Twilight" theme

there are three long jams...and, this is a really great way to learn body painting!!

i'm already booked for the jams...but, i can come over for a bit and help;)
