Ladies, you are all so brilliant! I just got a container like that but a bit smaller, it was at Target dollar spot now I need to get the brush.

I've got to have some nurse contacts out there somewhere. I think the ones with the sponge would be best just because they have only two sides that would have to be removed to make them flat enough to glue to the basin.

They would not take well to being dissected! Center section is pretty firm.

Marta was kind enough to go out of her way on her day off to send me a couple of brushes to try out. The brush in the link above is the same exact brush as the original, with the bristles on the other side just shaved off. I used E-6000 glue to glue it down into my last empty section and now just waiting for the glue to dry! Thanks so much, Marta! These brushes are soooo perfect... the bristles are super gentle on my paint brushes but really take out the paint when I clean.

You could literally make this yourself for under $8, if you go in with a friend on the scrub brushes!

Alas, the brush won't fit into the old square water basin (as in my pic). It's possible if you had a way of slicing through that thick plastic to make the brush fit, but I don't have a way to do that

Dang...I went to set up an order for a dozen of the ones from Lee Valley and the shipping is almost as expensive as the brushes...$7.95! I think I'll see if I can find a few locally before I spend that much.

Couldn't you just heat a knife over a stove burner and cut it that way? I've done something similar to that with plastic easter eggs and it worked just fine. You'd have to be very careful though...use gloves.

Do you have to glue them to the bottom. The scrub brushes will wear out eventually. Would be concerned that you'd have a hard time peeling them back out and that it would be more difficult to clean the basin.

Hmmm. I feel another experiment coming on! Will play a little tomorrow. Supposed to rain some more and I don't have to work!

Yeah, they float if not glued down... not much use if they won't stay on the bottom of the basin, especially during a busy gig. Every second counts at a festival when you have sometimes 40 people waiting in line! I just want to be able to swish my paint brush through the bristles of the scrub brush and not have to pick a brush up, put it in the basin, etc.

I've used my sprayer at my sink to clean them out and then added a few drops of bleach to the soak water. I let the basin soak overnight with this bleach water to take out any stains and kill any germs. The scrub brushes are plastic so I'm hoping they'll hold up to this over the long haul. If not, I'll have to figure out how to get them out and replace them

oh I see a quick trip to Lee Valley, what about using a E-6000 glue to attach velcro to the bottom of the tub and back of the brush, then it would be easier to replace if needed?

Big Thanks To Marta For sending me some sponges! I got a tub from Micheals (looks just like the one you have in the pic) and I trimed the sponge part off, used a regular scisors to take off the sides so they would lay flat, and used a piece of self stick velcro to stick them down. Was going to use e600, but it says not to use with food, so I thought maybe it would not be a good idea. The velcro is holding fine. This is the BEST brush cleaner. The water in the two small cups are totally clean. This is really nice! I use ivory soap, but it all comes out in the first rinse cup. I am just shocked at how well this works. There is no paint left in the brush at all. You really can go from white to black and back again if you want to. LOVE IT Thanks DAWNIE and THANKS MARTA! EVERYONE should try this!

I have access to numerous discarded surgical scrub brushes. They come with a sponge attached, but it's very easy to remove. I'd be happy to ship them to anyone just for the cost of shipping. I hate to throw so many away, but we throw away usually 2 per surgery (if two people scrub in), and there are usually several surgeries per day. They're not used on patients, only on the doctor's hands. Let me know if you'd like some and how many.

And I think the velcro idea is much better than the gluing! I will probably have to make a new basin when these scrub brushes wear out, and I will be velcro-ing those brushes in

Okay, I cut up two of the sponges that Martha was so kind to send and put them in my $4.00 brush bath I got at Hobby Lobby. There was glue on the back that was easy to remove with a butter knife.

I used this great tool I got from Sears (pictured) that holds triangle box cutter blades and it went right through the plastic. Seems like a regular box cutter would work as long as you protected yourself and the surface. (I love this tool, by the way, maybe a good father's day present??)

I used a 100% silicone adhesive (aquarium safe) that we had in the garage. We got it from Habitat restore for $1.50 so it might be worth a drive-by there if you have one in your city. I had to cure it for 24 hours.

I just ran some really hot water over the brushes at the bottom of the bath and they are holding really well. Because my bath is so small, I'll have to change often. The clean side did stay really clean so that will help with parent perceptions.

I washed all of my brushes with a scrub brush before I put it in the bath and I liked it a lot but all of my round brushes felt rough, like they were too clean and needed conditioner. I ended up putting some hair gel in my palm and setting them back to a nice round tip and they all looked great.

I just rinsed them out and put conditioner on them and they seem fine but we'll have to see if they'll stay good in use.

The silicon is brilliant Denise! So far, the velcro is holding. Gilded cat, we need a recycled brush clearing house, so to speak, because it is a waste! I would pay pal you postage to have a stash...this is my new brush system, for sure! I can't wait to use it on a busy gig. The clean factor alone is just wow...by the time you put the brush in the third well, heck, even in the second well, there is vertually no paint in it.

Before we all jump on the scrub brush bandwagon, just wanted to add that Denise mentioned to me that the scrub brush gave her rounds the "fly aways" and she had to condition them. FYI

I am not seeing that with mine, I hope I don't, but I will be looking for it for sure! I use ivory soap and alcohol at gigs so I use and master preservative and soap to condition, and Brush Shaper regularly at home to keep my brushes conditioned.

I don't know why it was my round brushes...my squares and filberts felt fine. Maybe it's the way they are constructed with lots of layers. It was more of a rough feeling not splayed or anything but I haven't conditioned my brushes in the past either so that might have to be part of my routine.

We'll have to keep updating this thread as we use the baths at gigs.
