LoneWolf wrote:So if you spend a lot of time designing a new facepaint and them half a year later you saw it in a step-by-step book, made by another facepainter, but a complete copy of your design, would you still just be happy? Would you feel different if they wrote that it was designed by someone else, but they can't remember the name? Or if they did mention your name, but you was not asked before? Maybe you would have liked to have your design in the book, instead of the other painter?
We are not talking about something being illegal, but if it is polite.
That is a different topic altogether, of course that is wrong and I should hope nobody of good morals would be so brazen !! what i meant was if I post a unicorn in a public forum or social networking site and somebody copies/paints it and puts it on their board I would not mind. I do actually ask and nearly always credit the person I take inspiration from if I can remember where I have seen it. I hold back some of my designs in progress or just circulate them amongst painters I work with for critic. That way when I want to I can enter them in for comps.
Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
sooo.. I'm at my annual festval (18th yr) and I have my usual young kids trying to make a "gothic buck" ..good for you..etc etc... I wish i had thought of this at your age..lol..not too proff..but whatever.. last year had my new friends 'Ruth's Fab Faces" & her sister Lynn "Masters of Magic & Fun" who are both talented artists..we were proffesional & worked our prices to coincide etc..and anm happy to ave met them :0 )..but .. No this year 2 new Face Painters are attending and lo & behold all of "YOUR" artwork that we so covet..is posted as my compt's artwork on their chart..I recognized MOST of the artwork from Facepainting Forum...all of your pics are on their chart.......almost all..can't wait to see how they duplicate all of your collective amazing talent ..Not cool at all but I will be nice...
Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Ugg! At least paint the designs yourself and then put them on your board!
They probably got them from google images.

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
I am so glad that this thread re-surfaced. Since I only started really reading stuff in the past couple of months I just missed this discussion in the first go round. I am not here to stir back up the proverbial pot but to say how inspired I was!
At first, yes, I felt a little resistance to move from copying but then I spent the evening for the first time NOT looking at other people's face paint art but at actual photos of real tigers to see their stripes, real horse faces for unicorns, real clouds, and even (shudder) real butterflies(!!) and for the first time in what has felt like a stagnated few weeks I felt like I made progress! So, this was an excellent reminder to get back to the basics and do art, not reproduction. Thanks again for all the generosity of ideas in this group!

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Our avatars?? from here? wow.....
not good.
I would see if I could get any information from them... company name, bis card, anything.... and I would try to get photos of their set up.... strike that I would blatantly go and take photos and hope they ask me why....
then I would wait untill take down and confront them about it.... but thats me... I am not suggesting you do any of those things....
I'm just saying I wouldn't be able to stop myself.
I'm almost used to seeing the snaz pictures displayed... but from here?
Damn I wish there was some way to stop lurking on here...
I guess there's no point worrying about it - it's just going to keep happening.... better that we keep improving our artform and skills so when they steal pics and we find out about it we go " what that old thing?... I can paint ten times better then that now!"...lol
Thanks for letting us know Dorothy.

I'd do the same, & totally agree about a way to stop lurking on here.....

I know some Forums can stop the trolls or at least make them post regularly. I'm sure Metina can stop it, too

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Excuse me for resurrecting this thread but it came to my mind when I saw the first prize winner in the Canary Island Carnival Body Painting Contest (february 2013). Here it is:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/lpapromocion/8438818699/in/set-72157632676128566/
And now, take a look at Alex Hansen Art (november 2012):

I know I defended the "copying" option when you're just starting to face/body paint and you just want to develope your skills and practice with those designs that you love , but I'd never post them or use them to advertise myself or , of course, I'd never submit them in a contest (I know my English is not my strong point, but you get the idea, don't you?)

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
I don't know it looks like it was inspired by. The head piece is completely different. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong?

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Maybe it's a familiar/similar character?
Wizard of Oz characters would still look very similar. KWIM?

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
It looks like they definitely used the same concept but really amped it up and expounded upon it making it WOW. Maybe they say "inspired by" somewhere? I feel they changed it enough. IMPO
Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Yes,CKC, they're not exactly the same (specially the head piece) but it's not just the same idea (I mean "concept"), but the same "jail", paited legs, arms,... I agree it is not the same design but I would have never submit it into a contest...Just MO

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Was the contest to maybe pick a design that HAS been done before and make it your own? I see the "Phantom of the opera" and a guy that kind of reminds me of "Rocky Horror Picture Show", maybe that was the theme. If you scroll through the pics you will see what I mean...
Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
No, Jody, I was looking for that "inspired by" thing, but I found nothing. Well, may be they said something about their inspiration while they were introducing the design at the show, I did't watch it... May be.

Re: "Inspired" vs. Copying
Erica, it was a "free theme" contest, the "Phantom of the Opera" you see is the "logo", the official image of the Canarian Carnival. And I read every interview that I found with the painter and she didn't say a word about being inspired (ahem) by anyone. Anyway, it was just a "OMG moment". And I still think that , although she did an awesome work, I would have painted an original design.
