NEW CHALLENGE
I have thought about it, and 4 pages isn't that long of a thread so I will add this weeks CHALLENGE to this Thread. (you know there are some boxes to the upper right where you can click to go to the last page--makes it a little faster)
I will see how long this thread gets but most likely I will change to a new thread after this challenge.
So here it goes:
We did a boy design so why not do a popular girl design? as if you didn't know this was next
CHALLENGE: BUTTERFLY -- of course!
SO HERE IS A LITTLE TWIST. Try to do at least 2 different types of butterflys--don't just change the colors, change the style.
they can be eye designs, mask, or full face---no limits on that
For example---You can do a onestroke butterfly
(Facesbylacey)--thought your little model was so cute!)
or a sponged on one
I also want you to try a more pointy design
and a more roundy shaped one
I am not sure who did these butterflys--I have a TON of butterflys in my inspiration folder, so if you know please give credit!!
Plus since I am a newbie myself I don't know the terms for pointy or roundy shapes when it comes to butterfly---anyone know?
Then I want you to do just one that is YOU---what is your style? What comes out of you naturally?
SO BREAKDOWN
1. Do at least 2 designs
One pointy
One round
2. Try a One Stroke
3. Try a sponge
4. Try your natural style.
so you could do a pointy onestroke and a round sponge (which is what they naturally kind of lead too anyway.
Please let us know in your post if you are open to suggestions and remember what anyone says is just a suggestion

Lacey face----NO NO NO You can still post any spidy you want! We want to see it!!!
these are just a comfortable place to post your work until you feel comfortable playing with the "big boys" in this forum!
In fact any NEWBIE can post spidy or butterfly on this thread until .... well we do another spidy or butterfly thread.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
So here is my first attempt at a spiderman.. i tried with silver eyes, but i couldn't get good coverage :/ and my lines are horrible as a general rule
this was my second attempt
I decided to try a black base and stencil red circle/boxes on top, to give the illusion of the fabric that the new spidy has..
This apparently does not work as well with a sponge as an airbrush lol
And i tried the silver/white lines.. Fail
Decided to stop being fancy seeing as i do not possess the skill to do so
And my third one was a red spiderman, white eyes and black lines

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Lady S. thanks for sharing. A suggestion would be on the spidey web lines would start with a diamond between the eyes, bridge of nose( just read that on a u tube vid). Angle your webbing to that point so they move inward. Does that make sense? Ps its always harder to paint practice heads than real skin, paint doesn't go on a smooth or easy.
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Ok, posting my last spidey. I'm not very happy with it at all, first of all I rushed through it and forgot what it was I wanted to do! On this design I wanted the outline to look kinda shadowy but instead it looks smudged.... oh well practice makes perfect so will keep trying. Can't wait for the BUTTERFLY challenge!
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
hi belle! Enjoyed your spider design.
It's nice to have a place for us new painters, so we can perfect our skills. Line work has been tough for me. I got some wolf black though and it goes on really smoothly, smoother than my dfx black...for me anyway.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
LadySinaz - I think you were really brave with your designs, and it's great to try new things whether you feel they work or not. What silver paint do you use? I get great coverage from the Superstar one I use, it's gorgeous and so creamy.
Belle - liked the shape of your mask, and the idea of the spider hanging from it!
Niele - line work is so hard at first, isn't it? I'm trying to practice every day, but I get pretty discouraged when I can't even do a neat line sometimes. On the bright side, I'm sure you're farrrrr better than I am. So when you're having a bad day, just think "Ahh well, at least I'm not as bad as Kammy" and all will be well.
Looking forward to the butterfly challenge! I don't have any one-stroke cakes yet though, so I can't do that bit!

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
This morning, just before picking up the girls from school, I was a little bit in a hurry. I did the eyes different! I like the lined one better.
A rush is not good for sharp lines, so on the unlined eye the silver was getting a bit smushy.
I used PartyXplosion.
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
@facesbybelle I like the last one better! Because it doesn't go completely over your nose.
How can you do the shadow on the edges? Do you use the starblends? Can you do it with wet paint? I'm afraid to try, I'll make a big mes of it (don't have starblends)

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
@ladysinaz I like the black/red effect!
And maybe you can use thinner pencils for the lines.
With the lines I would avoid the mouth, so I would put one line just above and one under the lips.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
For the shadow look on my black lines...I dry brush the edges in the direction of the shadow. Something I picked up from a Halloween design that Lisa Joy Young did. I actually wait for the lines to dry and then just smudge them...they smudged too much when the paint was wet. Good luck!
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Daphne, I like that eye design I dont think Ive seen one like that yet..How creative..Did it take long?
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
I like the Spidey mask too, Daphne! It's really unusual, and could almost be made into a butterfly to do both weeks' challenges in one!

Decided to stop being fancy seeing as i do not possess the skill to do so
And my third one was a red spiderman, white eyes and black lines
[quote]
I don't speak Code (computer language) very well so sorry I messed up the quote.
ladysinaz---I love your eye shape on the first one-
I love the idea of giving the second one fabric texure--you are on to somthing there!!
and the third one is a classic spidey---good job.
My suggestion is making the "Swoops" that are horizontal more U shaped and less straight. Also maybe try a spidey with thinner lines (not nessasary MORE, just thinner).
"Being Fancy" is the whole point of this thread! To try new techniques and put them out there. Keep going you are doing fine!!

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Faces By Belle---I like how it went up over the nose instead of down it. Nice! I like this face--the shadowing is hard--I think people use more of a starblend for that (or eyeshadow) just a thought.
Daphne--totally wonderful!! Jealous of how delicate it looks! What brush did you use? Love the spider (maybe have the back two legs facing up the forehead?) and I like both eyes---outlined and not outlined. That is a good thing to know if you have extra time--if not don't outline the eye--if you have the time do it--both look great!

lol thats what i was (trying) doing
I was intending on my "u"'s and not straight lines.
And i can't seem to make a thin line to save my life (unless i use a tiny tiny brush) and even with that i have paint issue.
I am using all Snaz at the moment.. the art store 2 blocks over had it, so i didn't have to order. Figure it was good to practice with. My temper begs to differ lol
Once i pay down the foolish amount of money i have already dropped on various supplies for other parts of my business. i'll get some better paint.
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Some of these ladies do AMAZING things with Snaz, but I am still learning on how to get it to work for me.
Plus I am amazed at the fine lines some of these ladies get with big brushes--I am still really working on that also!!
keep practicing--one day we will be looking at newbies going--"oh I have been there, but I am past that!" *sigh* someday!
