Newbie Challenge 2012
Since there are so many of us newbies I think that we should to a weekly challenge.
I propose that each week a new challenge is given and we have 1 week to post something dealing with that theme. PM me if you have a suggestion.
Mostly it will force us to practice and try new techniques and such.
Anyone interested?
Since we are all of different time zoness --The challenge will last from MY Monday to Monday. I will try to post the challenge on Sunday night, but I will for sure post it by Monday night-- not trying to be bossy, just trying to keep it simple.
sometimes the PRO's post stuff and I think it scares some of us away---so let this be a place to freely post!
it is barely Thursday (about 5 minutes into Thrusday) So I will choose a easy, and often requested one for this week. This weeks challenge is SPIDERMAN. You can do full face, mask, eye, cheek, whatever you want.
Plus I think it would be best if we don't post something we already did and have a picture of, try to do something new for each week. If you normally do Spiderman the same way--think outside the box and try something new. If you FAIL show us so we can learn from your mistakes
See easy! How many newbies will take the challenge for this "easy" one.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
I started face painting after volunteering two years ago, but never get a chance to really practice. I've been asked to do parties for pay a few times, I don't advertise it's usually a friend of a friend. This week I decided to start up again, I figure I should really try to step it up because it makes me sick to my stomach everytime I do a party and I think I'm going to do bad.
I know practice is key to getting better, I just hate painting myself...can't see without my glasses
Anyhow here is one I worked on today. I did this before I saw the post but wanted to show it because I need to know how to improve this design.
I will start working on the SPIDERMAN today I accept the challenge

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
OK...I just said on another thread that I was too scared to join a challenge as I've been painting SUCH a short time. I'm possibly the newbiest newbie of all, as I only picked up a face paint for the very first time a little over a week ago. That's me in the avatar....so I know it shows.
However....this sounds like fun. If everyone promises not to laugh at my oh-so-amateurish efforts, I'm in.
Now I have to persuade my 4 year old to sit still long enough for me to paint him red and black. Therein lies the biggest challenge of all! I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's interpretation of the week's subject, and getting to know all the other newbies better!
Where do we post the photos for the challenge?

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Is there any way to make this topic a "sticky", so that we can easily find the challenge subject each week?
I'm all excited and nervous now!

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
I WANT you guys to post pictures---in fact I would rather have this be more of a PICTURE POSTING CHALLENGE---then talk thread. PLEASE POST!
I know there is thread already for Spiderman, but since this is a NEWBIE thread I figured most of us haven't posted anything in that other thread yet---AND the challenge will change!
Lets start posting--no matter how bad!! Can't wait to see them ALL!!
I don't know how to make this thread a Sticky (I don;t know what that is) BUT when you click on the HOME button you will see written in small white type SHOW POSTS SINCE LAST VISIT--or something like that. Every Monday I will post the new challenge and it should show up there.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Ahh, thanks for the heads-up, amylady - I'll use that to find the thread if it ever slips down. A "sticky" thread is usually only made that way by an admin. It means that no matter what's happening with other threads, the sticky one stays at the top of the board so that users can find it easily.
I'll post my tiny Spidey as soon as I can persuade him to let me paint him. He's currently asleep by my side, having crawled into bed with me for a cuddle.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Ok...This posting pictures thing is frustrating (as I have never done it before). The download window will not GO AWAY after I select the photo. Anyway...here goes nothing. Hope you like it. I couldn't bribe my 11 year old to be spiderman so it had to be the practice head instead.
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Shadow Drawing: You have to reclick the icon that you click to place the photo---It took me a while to figure that out too!
Way to be the 1st one to post. I will say I love the web--it is awesome, but I am confused by the black thing under the eye, I am not sure what it is?
I also like how you didn't do the white eye, but I wonder if it would change the look if you did add it.
I also like how it goes across the forehead and down on the cheek--I little different shape then I have seen before
NICE WORK!
My kids are not awake so while I want to use someone else, I am going to work on me tonight and hopefully post later tonight
ALSO--there is NO limit to how many you post----
for example....I have three price ranges so I want to post all three versions of my Spiderman that I will offer.

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
I Too LOVE the web work you did there and how it just flows so gracefully down the side of the face, but i am a bit confused by the black thing under the eye as well, at first my thought was stinger? but does spidy have a stinger?
Beautiful work! I have two big gigs this weekend starting tomorrow so i hope on Saturday between gigs i can try and get one done too!

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Here you go - a 2 year old "1/3 spider" using Starblends and Wolfe black... he had a web on his hand, too and went around shooting it all night long. Made me SO happy.
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Shadowdrawing - your linework is gorgeous! So delicate and neat...colour me jealous. Beautifully even red layer, too, I'm very impressed. Like the others, I'm not sure about the "stinger" bit, though.
Doe - I'm frankly impressed you can get any sort of recognisable design down on a 2 year-old, given how difficult it is for my wigglesome 4 year-old to stay still! I like the way there are teardrops on the outer edges of the mask, it's a good way to give it some definition and I may well steal off with it... The lines aren't as neat as the first example, but that's kinda to be expected when she was working with a disembodied head, and you have a wriggly toddler.
How do the Starblends work? Are they a solid watercolour cake like FAB or Snaz? Or something else?

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
Starblends are dry pressed powders made by Mehron. They are pretty fabulous for little wiggly people.
Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
shadow drawing--got it! that is funny!
I LOVE the quick simple mask Doe--this looks like something i might have to "steal" Love the the eyes don't get outlined all the way--seriously great for a 2 year old!! Plus what a great head shape to paint--I find it funny that I am thinking that stuff now...

Re: Newbie Challenge 2012
So i grabbed my 2 year old this morning between packing for my gig this afternoon and tried to do a spidy girl on her. I HATE how it turned out but since this is a challenge and i think we should show our good and our bad to help each other learn here it is lol.
Line work is terrible as she refuses to sit still lol. I will post another pic this weekend because i don't like how this one turned out at all.
