Hair Clips
I need your advice....
I used to buy small 1 inch butterfly hair clips to pull the kids hair back. However, my supplier no longer carries them. Does anyone have any other ideas or knows where to get small hair clips really cheap?
My Avatar has an example of the clips i'm talking about.

Re: Hair Clips
Plastic headbands from dollar tree work out great. When I start doing parties again, I was planning on putting alcohol in a square container big enough for the headband to fit in and placing it in the alcohol and then laying it out to dry to keep them somewhat sanitary.
Re: Hair Clips
I get the exact same butterfly clips from Dollarama, but I don't know if they have those in the US? I just tell the kids to keep them because I never reuse anything that goes in their hair.
Re: Hair Clips
Thanks Perry, I don't think we have a Dollarama here. We do have dollar stores but they sell larger ones in smaller quantities and are too expensive. I too let the kids keep them.
Re: Hair Clips
what about the boys?..... just curious....
I used to use headbands but after my daughter started school - brought home nitts/head lice and I fought with the bastards for weeks..... now I don't use anything. If their hair is in the way I spray my hands with water and smoosh it back like a hairdresser so it holds while I paint....mostly.... if it's windy forget it.
Whitney - I don't think the alcohol will do much to kill them - but still better then nothing.
I'm thinking you should be able to find these little butterfly clips in bulk from china on ebay or one of those..... you might have to buy a thousand at once, but hey you wouldn't run out for ages!

Re: Hair Clips
I use them on the boys too.... I just tell them they can take them out as soon as I'm done... then give them to their sister or throw them away.
Re: Hair Clips
I am happy to say I have your answer. I used the little clips when I first started, but had similar trouble. Now I buy bobby pins. They work great! I buy a pack of 720 for like $5 from Sally's. they are a little stronger than the kind you buy in packs of 50-60 at the grocery store. Rarely do they not hold the fine hair of a toddler, but usually they do great. The little girls are excited when I say they can keep them because they are just like mommies! When a customer does bring them back, I just toss them in my trash. Even a boy won't turn it away, if I tell him it is a very manly clip, and we'll take it out as soon as I am done. One the windy days, it is nice to have something to keep the hair out of my face too. :)

Good Idea and it's much cheaper, thanks
Re: Hair Clips
Bobby pins for the boys and little clips for the girls. The kids always keep them.
You can get 100 bibby pins for $1 at the Dollar Store.

Re: Hair Clips
We used to use headbands, I searched and searched till I found smooth plastic ones with no teeth (in an effort to avoid headlice). But now I use bobby pins, after someone suggested them and they are so much better! I don't have to remember to get them back which is great, and the girls love that they can keep them. I have glittery ones for the girls, they cost less than a penny apiece. I have some plain black or brown ones for the boys but they usually take them out anyway, and I always throw them away.
Re: Hair Clips
I use metal duckbill clips like these http://salon.wimexbeauty.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=74019&Category_Code=7030
they hold a lot of hair back, are easier to use than bobby pins for me, are easy to santize and I don't have to the touch the hair to use them!

Re: Hair Clips
I use similar clips to Shannons... salon all purpose metal clips. I think I got a pack of 12 for around $2. They are super easy to slip in to hair of all lengths and silkiness, and don't every get snagged. Plus they're all metal, so easy to sanitize without damaging them. And they're not pretty, so they almost always get returned to me if I forget to take them out of a kids hair.
Re: Hair Clips
OT but I just have to say - Amanda, your avatar pic is STUNNING!!! I just went to your website hoping to see a bigger pic of it and I was not disappointed - it totally made my jaw drop. Beautiful!!!

Re: Hair Clips
I use the same clips as Shannon... bobby pins are too fussy to deal with. These are strong and hold a lot of hair back, even on windy days, and super fast to put in and take out. I let them keep them so that they can keep their hair out of their face, but if they don't want them I throw them in my bag with dirty sponges and just wash them in the washing machine in really hot water and throw them all in the dryer when I'm done... nicely sanitized and clean, ready for the next gig
Re: Hair Clips
I started using the same clips as Shannon. I get mine from the black hair care stores. You can get 80 for under $5. I also started gluing small flowers to the tops of the clips to dress them up. Because I don't want them back. If you get a hydrangea bush in white or purple from Michael's. You can pretty much have a flower for each one. I just put a little jewel in the center and there you go. Cut flower clip that is all the rage. I get the big bag of jewels anyway and just use the small ones for the center. And the great part is, you can use your 40% coupons.
Re: Hair Clips
I use the same plastic clips and also colored bobby pins. I get them at The Dollar Tree.
Re: Hair Clips
I buy little butterfly-shaped clips I find on e-bay in bulk and on the butterfly wings I glue bright colored glitter or tiny gems. They are bright and shiny. The girls love that they get to keep them. I went through a whole container of 100 this past weekend.

Re: Hair Clips
I wonder why kids with bangs want a forehead design. In my limited experience I ask if they want something that goes down onto their cheeks so their hair doesn't cover it.
But this is great, I will be armed (with bobbypins) and ready to go next time

Re: Hair Clips
I buy the mini butterfly clips at the dollar store, my daughter gave me a box of maybe 200 hundred hair pins so I set for now.
