Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
You can by the crimp beads real cheap, about 50 of them, at a beauty supply store. That's the main part. There are all kinds of feathers out there, synthetic hairs, etc. Buy small and try a few
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
I had a partner with me for the summer season doing festivals with me. I didnt do them, but she did. She refused to do real ones bc they are kinda cruel so she sold the synthetic.
Actually, by me, the colored extensionsnare pretty popular now instead of the feathers.
She said the tinsel was a real pain in the naughty word. For the feathers or regular hair extensions be sure to get the beads with the silicone in them so they wont slip.
Sometimes if i do a craft fair or something, i bring the leftover feathers to sell and I do them at my diva parties. They attach with a kind of clip under the hair. The parents like them because they can take them out when they want.
Hope that helps, oh and you should be able to get some cheap enough through ebay before committing to a large order. She got hers through dhgate through China (shudder)

Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
Thank you so much!! Is there any reason I can't use the natural dyed feathers my hobby Lobby carries? When doing them at fairs do you tell them to release the bead w pliers when they r ready for them to come out?

Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
The hobby lobby feathers may not be color fast, and the maribo can have stiff shafts that may not give you very good results. You should look for Rooster hackle, the ones sold to fly fisherman. They are hard to come by, and many tackle shops will hide them if they see you coming! I found some on line, at one of the fishing places. They come in bunches, one bunch will run you about 8.50, depending on how long they are, and will have about 100 or more feathers in it.
You can find the silicone beads on line too, on etsy, as well as the tools, which are helpful. You can just use regular needle nose pliers. I would not buy the feathers on etsy, all I could find were the ones that people had made into bunches, and they were marked up way too high. Go for the bunches under "rooster hackle"

Was googling rooster hackle and got this article...

It's part sad, part funny.

Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
Just like you don't use the same brush on 2 different kids without cleaning it you can't use the same comb without sanitizing it in between. I had a cosmetology license in Missouri for 21 years and if a state board member sees you not following state regulations if your licensed you'll get time to comply but if your not licensed you can get thousands of dollars in fines from the state. The laws very slightly from state to state on what you can and can't do without a license.
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
I've considered it, but would go synthetic. I'm not a huge animal activist(I eat meat & love it) but don't go for cruelty to animals & the roosters die for those feathers... I have a synthetic strand in my hair & no one notices the difference(they girl selling them thought they were real & was surprised when I told her they weren't ). I've had mine for 1 1/2 months & have washed it, blown dried it, used product on it & flat ironed it daily & it's still looking great. Synthetic are much less expensive too.
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
Good to know about the synthetics. I had heard the opposite, that they did not stand up to heat and styling, but it would be nice to add them in to the feathers since they are cheeper and in easier to find. I doubt that the trend will last too long, but it is an easy add on, and as long as you follow a few sanitation practices, it is not difficult to do, and they really sell. Takes about 2 minutes from start to finish.
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
I've had them in my hair for a long tine too... Washing, drying, flat ironing andnthey are fine.nits nit like Barbie hair. They stand up real well.
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
What about dyed emu feathers? Has anyone tried them? They seem to be a cruelty free natural option. I am interested in the synthetic too, but wonder how I know if I am getting a quality one? Then of course there's tinsel too. Do you think the tinsel will be more popular or equally popular?
HillbillyDiva: do you have to be licensed in Mo to do feathers? I am not a cosmetologist so I lack that training. I assumed (there's that word that a container of barbicide would do for comb and hook, yes? Are gloves needed? Or does hand sanitizer work?
Choices choices choices! Haha!
Thank you all!

Hmmmm, scratch that! I called the bird of cosmetology. It is not legal for me to do hair feathers. I DO have to be licensed for that. Thank hillbilly diva!

Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
You can however, sell the clip in feathers. I sell them at events and they sell really well. There is no installation or anything and they are just as nice.
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
I know that the examiners where at the park 3 times this summer checking on the ladies that put the halo's in the hair. In MO. you can't charge to do anything with the hair unless your licensed but you can sell the hair ornaments.
Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
I believe you'll find suppliers like Oriental Trading are selling the clip in type now some on fine chains that clip in....even in Walmart this week.
The feathers you want should be flexible enough for you to curl them easily around your finger without them breaking. Too, too many are using chicken and turkey feathers with strong quills and they just break leaving unhappy clients.
I just added painted feather designs to my board...I'm not looking to be a vendor and many times selling little things like this can hurt in the long run on commercial jobs.
I do have a supply and put them in for friends. Hair Flairs Reflective Hightlights on fb. Good luck they sure are fun to wear. Plus videos on youtube teach how to put in and how to cut the short ends off so they don't stick in the scalp and the direction to hold the hair is important and explained.

Re: Hair feathers? Anyone?
My question: does anyone want to share how they display and store their feather extensions? I am not in the business of exploiting animals to make my living, so have opted for the synthetic ones. It's nice to have a clear conscience, and honestly - without comparing side by side - I am really happy with the synthetic. They feel nice, don't seem to tangle easily, the colours are vibrant, and they are easy to work with. While I've been wearing mine for only a week, I have no doubt that they will still be fine long term.
Anyway, back to my question: what's the best way to store and display?
Would love to see pictures, if anyone can be bothered trying to work with the pic uploader... or a link to a youtube tutorial (on storage/display) or some other site if you know of one.
Cheers.
