Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Thank you SuzySparkles, I just found this thread and you are awesome to spend the time to share so much valuable information. Love the plastic pallets always frustrated with the metal Luminiers even though I would not want to do a job with out my Luminiers. As others I have broken starblend, did anyone repair their starblend using alcohol or the blending mixture and did it hold up for job use? This would be a wonderful way to move my starblends into smaller containers and make other colors.
Please would appreciate feedback from those who followed through and if you continue to do so or found a problem that didn't make it feasible for long term on the job use. I have many Mehron powders from when painters first started using loose powders what a joy if I could turn them into pressed powders...I tried twinkling my nose and waving a wand...but alas it has not worked. Also wouldn't this empty pallet they sell be good for an emergency kit? Thanks in advance and Kat I see you are a Luminier junkie too...so how does this compare?

No, you don't have to use mixing medium- but it does help the mica from reverting to powder form when you drop your palette. Also, the higher percentage of iso alcohol you use the quicker it will dry out.

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
I'm digging up an old thread but I've got some supplies that I wonder if they'll work....
I got a diy eye-shadow kit for myself last birthday. It has some mica samples, pressed powder base, and I bought a binder. Also various trays to put it in.
The binder contains jojoba oil, caprylic capric triglyceride (from coconut) and dimethicone. No Alcohol. Will it work if I mix alcohol with it you think?
(Fyi Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface. It is also used to alter the thickness of liquid products. And I know dimethicone is a lubricant and conditioning agent.)
All of the color samples are Mica and oxide, titanium or iron.
The powder base is similar to the binder but it's also got some fillers and more lubricants. One has zinc in it to make a more opaque. I've made some shadows with it and they are great for shadows, but I don't think it will do well for powder type make up.
So I guess the question is, do you think I could make some pressed powders with the mica/oxides, using the binder and some alcohol?

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Suzy, you inspired me. Had to settle for a 26mm pan pallette but I think it's kinda cute. Pans are a little bigger than a quarter but I have enough of my mica samples to refill them. I couldn't get pics to do justice to the shiny colors but here's a look. Thank you SO much for the idea!

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Marta... I couldn't find any "sample size" mica for sale at coastal scents when I just looked recently. Is that where you got them?
Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Kat, I bought them a week ago find the mica you want and click on size/quantity ... make sure to order the Ultra Shimmer. Wow added it to a blue and it is beautifuuuulllll. Got 26mmm pans also since they closed out the bigger one. Think maybe I added a little too much of the Pressing Medium mine are a little oily, but maybe that will dry up some.
Used broken orange Starblend and added sparkle but it seemed to take the intensity away from the color. Really wanted to be able to make my broken Starblends work and to make them smaller, as in a Paradise/Wolfe container.
Any one had luck with mixing the Starblends?

Yes, like skjfunny said, when you order you click on size and select sample. Yeah, Suzy. I love them - just hate that the camera wouldn't show the colors well. They are awesome!Kat's FacesForFun wrote:Marta... I couldn't find any "sample size" mica for sale at coastal scents when I just looked recently. Is that where you got them?

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Ah ha! I answered my own question... by looking at the ingredients of the costal scents mica. All of them have mica and some sort of oxide. Sweet! So I got one of the costal scents palettes and just used my binder and some alcohol. I also used some pipette droppers instead of spraying, every time I spritzed the powders they blew all over the place.
The colors are AWESOME. I'm not sure if I'd use them on their own but I for sure would use them under and over things. and I've got a few that the top layer didn't smush down well so it's already flaking. sigh. Now I just need to try them on my little models.

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Ha ha it is! The worst part was stuff arrived from CS on friday. A huge snow storm had hit Thursday night. My mail box is a block away. I couldn't get to my stuff till sat! It was so hard waiting- but there was no way I was going to trudge through 2 feet of snow to get it!
Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Hi I finally rec'd my order from coastalscents late this afternoon and as Martha said they dont offer the 44mm case and pots at this time, so am guessing doing the math 26mm vs 44mm just less than half the sample size. I am downloading the video provided in hopes a new project while relaxing in the cooler weather...Wish me luck....PS Metina your shipping rocks \m/ I ordered from CS on the 21st finally got here on the 30th..
Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Hi
I finished these over the 4th and they are a bit powdery. Is that the way they should be???? when I apply with a sponge brush there is a lot of fall out..... thoughts???

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Mine are powdery too, but stay on well. Longevity is def. more important IMHO. I just keep a clean blush brush handy to clean up a bit.

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
I don't mean to be a skeptic, but if anyone has any pics since they've made their pressed powders I would love to see them.
Also, I wasn't sure if I saw an answer to a question I saw a asked a few times. Are these similar to starblends or lumiere (ben nye)? If not, how so, etc.
Thanks so much for the info and answering the questions.

I don't have the luminiers but I do have the starblends.. I would say it all depends on the colors you chose. Mine are sheer and girly colors for cheeks and eyes. I havent painted over them yet. They are a bit powdery like the starblends and I am going to add more mixing liquid to see if that will stop the fall out a bit more. The youtube video is of Suzy applying the ones that she made and there are pics on this thread of the colors . my pics didn't due the colors justice... I will try to post them again later today or tomorrow..(cheap camera) Its fun to do either way....

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Thanks Vegas Mom! I saw the pics, but if you're saying they are more opaque than the photo suggests then that's awesome. I bought some kryolan UV powders and they were so sheer I couldn't use them. I got a black Ben Nye Magicake and it was too sheer (dry) that I couldn't use that. I do use starblends, and like them for bases for spidey, cats, dogs, skulls, etc.
Thanks again for the info. If you do have better pics that would be awesome. Don't sweat it. It's cheap enough where i can chance it with a color, but I don't want a bunch of product to go into my useless paint graveyard.

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Here's a pic for you: The white on the spiderman eyes are pressed powder (on my avatar also). The cheetah was done with gold and orange powders with white for the eyes and muzzle. Pay no attn to the cheetah spots please, still learning those!
The one color I won't use is red. It's just to pink for my liking.

Re: Mini Jam - Face Paint Powders!!
Mine are sheer not opaque. except the blue...I really think it depends on your colors that you choose.... The cellini blue stains the skin, not sure if i would use it for face painting... I have cellini red in mica form, havent used it yet...I got that for tattoos...
