Funny, because on their site it says they're "on sale". Maybe the $9 was the "on sale" price and they forgot to remove those words when they upped the price to $10. cyclops

I think they really should have done the weight in grams so it didn't appear to be so little. It is what it is, but perception is half the battle.

Oh wait, I guess they did. .25 ounces is just a smige over 7 grams. WOW! That is shocking when you think that on average you are getting a 30 to 40 gram cake over most brands for about $8-$10 at retail.

Something to think about!

Definitely time to get out the utility knife, eh? I am wondering if this is why Silly Farm is being so close-mouthed about what brands and colors they are using - to prevent people from making their own. However, I'd rather pair up my own split-cake colors anyway so it works for me.

Yup!

It's easy enough - as said somewhere I do advise sticking to 1 brand per split cake, and generally 1 'type' of that brand (like all matt or all sparkle) as otherwise they may wear away at vastly different rates, etc...

That is a really good tip Cat, especially with the way some paints react to the heat.

Like the gold they use in those cakes look likes the Kry IF bronze that we all love as gold. But that make-up is very mushy and I just don't see it standing up with other paints. Any thoughts what other gold that might be?

It could be the Wolfe/Diamond FX Metallic Gold - I have some it is commendably good! I was using the Mehron Gold Metal Powder mixed with my Mehron pallette paint (yellow or orange) and I find that I like the Wolfe Gold as well for quickness -- just my nerves prevent me from putting straight on a child - I want a Snaz base underneath typically.

OOOh, I keep reading these posts about the split pots so I ordered the new split pots from Sherry of Fun Faces. I understand that the pots are factory made so I'm excited to get them. I'll let you know what I think of them when I see them.

And as a heads up, Sherry tells me that the prices of Diamond FX is also going to be going up.

Yes, my bargain bin seems to be my most popular seller! Smile My husband complains, but I really hate to return product, so when I get damaged items, I decided I would sell at a reduced price in my bargain bin.

Shannon, I'm going to have to look for those paint saver containers... they look pretty nice. I've been using day of the week pill holders from Walmart.

Split Cakes - Page 4 Empty Another box of split cakes ; )

Post by Winger1200 Thu Jul 16, 2009 4:03 am

As you've seen, my pallet is all split cakes and I made another in an empty snaz cake container - the rainbow cakes are indeed adictive and a great way to use up small peices of paint left in the container.
I ran across a nice box for my one stroke designs that allows a long stroke for a good color load. It's a plano box found in the fishing tackle section of walmart for under $2.50. I will spray paint it black like the small one because it looks too messy as is.
The small box is great for sponge brushes when I make princess crowns & masks.

I also slice off the hinges of the box so the lid can go under the boxes when I use them, which makes packing up easier. This photo was taken before that was done.
Happy Painting,
Susan

When they ask for a rainbow design, lt's fun to watch the children's eyes get big when I ask which rainbow colors they want as I wave my hand over my colorful split cake pallet & boxes! Priceless!

Split Cakes - Page 4 Empty Re: Split Cakes

Post by Just Jenny Thu Jul 16, 2009 6:06 pm

Earlier I almost had given up on using the cakes because I really had a hard time to begin with because I tried using a filbert brush instead of the 3/4 flat. It's all in the brush, and it's important to use what seems to be such a huge brush, but it really works like magic. Last week I was offering princess faces and no one asked for the longest time, then After the first girl asked, and they saw me use the multi color loaded flat brush, that was what most of the girls wanted. I quickly ordered more mini blending cakes.

I do have a question for everyone who fills their own pallets....how do you refill them? do you empty that slot and start over or do you add more paint on top or...well how do you keep it filled?
