Split Cakes Empty Split Cakes

Post by Metina Wed Feb 18, 2009 7:37 am

I wanted to share an idea the Wolfe Brothers gave me over the weekend. They take a regular color say organge and split cake it with neon orange. You still have both colors to use, but if you mix them you get the pop of neon with the opacity of the regular.

I also made my own "wonder" pallet, which was pretty easy and super cheap. I just wish I could get myself to use them. Sometimes it is so easy to reach for the old stand bys. I need to get practising with this to A. Use it up B. Would probably help with speed. Wonder pallet is in my album if you want to take a look.

Split cakes are a great way to use colors you have, that you find you are rarely using - once you split that color with one that compliments you'll begin to use it up.

Split Cakes Mykit2

I just do that in my palettes... I've got the Snaz jumbo palettes and many are split cakes - 2 and 3 colours, I think I have one 4 colour too but that is the "catch-all" grey/silver spot which is more of a mush than a split cake! Smile I've rearranged this a bit since the photo was taken but it is essentially the same...

If you are asking me... No... I cut the cakes with a steak knife and plop them in the holes... if they break I shove the pieces in. If they crumbled a bit I add a little water and smooth it out with a brush and let it dry.

Even if I am stuffing a deaper container which I have done when making rainbow/multi cakes, I just shove them in and apply pressure (usually a tissue over the top and press with my fingers.) The next time I use them they will smooth out with the water...

I Know, I Know!!!! It's Wolf.....I love those containers. They didn't have them for long, but they were really nice. The smaller ones are just perfect for rainbows/splits because they aren't to deep or to wide.

Do I win a prize for knowing?????

That's a 2 oz Wolfe White in the "old" packaging. I've still got lots - and they are smaller than the Paradise pots... Wink I like the pots too. Sorry Jenny... no prize today.

Do you have problems with the Snazaroo jumbo palettes splitting? I have these palettes and they have gotten a few small cracks on the edges. I'm trying to be extra careful with them now, but would eventually like something more durable, but with the same large spots for paint. Any suggestions?

I don't know if this is why your palettes are cracking, but there is something in Snaz that will deteriorate most plastic. This is why it is in the clear cup before it is put in the plastic container. This is widely know in the UK.

Many in the UK like using the Grimas brand stacking system, but had to put cling film in the container before transfering the Snaz paint and Grimas pots are pretty thick.

Those Snaz jumbo palettes in the photo are still my original ones - I've been using them for ...hmm.. I think 6 or 7 years now. When I set up I put the lids in my kit so they aren't accidentally squashed. They're fine still too.

The palettes that have my workshop and theatre paints in are a bit more beat up as other people use them and they aren't as careful as I am...but, I've never had to replace any.

I put the all brands paint directly into the palettes - I dig the Snaz out of the clear plastic tray that it comes in in the 18ml containers, and just smoosh the cakes into the holes. The holes will hold two 18ml Snaz, or one 2.5 oz Kryolan, etc. I combine brands together in split cakes too... Funky Foxes and Grimas, Kryolan and Snaz, WB and Snaz... etc.

The Snaz apparently only "eats" the grey plastic that the Grimas containers are made of, I think. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the Snaz jumbo palettes...

Metina, I did not know that about Snaz breaking down plastics. Interesting! Well, I have a Snaz Pro-22 tray with the paints directly inserted, and mine hasn't cracked yet but it's pretty flimsy so I wouldn't be surprised. I think it's mostly the tray quality, unfortunately. I use it because it is the size I need and has the perfect sized wells for me. A lot of mine are split cakes and I love it.

Post by Metina Fri Feb 20, 2009 6:50 am

I found out last night that it is the oil in Snaz that eats the Grimas, but it eats through other plastic as well. You many not notice this since you transfer your paint, but it will eat through the Snaz containers if left too long, this is why they put it in the clear cup before putting it in either the blue or gray Snaz pot. If you use the Snaz pots directly and have had one for a while, this is why the container is starting to crumble and crack along the edges.

You are right, it may not be "all" plastic, but I would have though Snaz would have at least changed their own packaging. This eating through plastics thing doesn't bother me about the paint, but it is soooo annoying when the container starts to crumble.

Those were the "old" blue bases on the Snaz 18ml... They are using grey and black now on new stuff and it is different plastic. At least all the Snaz I've got from the UK is in the new containers.

And it has no effect on the blue jumbo trays - after 6 years I think I might have noticed if it did... Wink

As long as the problem is fixed then party on! I don't use too much Snaz now and I do have some of the old blue pots.

Check out this video from silly farm. They add black to skip the outline process(sort of) and it is pretty darn cool.
