$9 for a quarter ounce of face paint???

I made my own one-strokes pots from left over Kryolan years ago but haven't really made much use of them over the years. I really should use them more and practise my roses. I can do sunflowers (I painted a mural in our bathroom!) and leaves...

I think I'll go play with my little pots now...

The only way I'd buy ready-made split cakes would be if I needed one in colors that I didn't already have. In that case it might be cheaper, but otherwise I make my own.

How wide do you think those Arty Brush containers are? Maybe about 1 inch?

Probably as the brush they say to use is a 1" flat.

$20 for what MIGHT be 32 grams. Also, you REALLY only need three colors, not five since they will blend in the middle and make the orange and green.

Buy the three colors and make yourself three rainbow cakes OR more probably for the cost of buying just ONE! Or if you need to have all five colors you will end up with five or more cakes for the cost of buying about two!

Also, keep in mind that they all buy there paint wholesale and are really making a ton off anyone who buys these things. KEEP the money in your pocket.

They aren't very wide - if you have a nearby wal-mart just buy one of those .98 bon bon lipglosses and clean it out. That is the container she was using in her demo class at la fete.

After reading this thread last night I made 4 separate split cakes trying to emulate the Arty brush sets. I used bought GUM orthodontic wax and emptied out the containers. The size and depth is good. However, I used my Snazaroo paints and they seem to be too goopey. I'm not happy with the consistency. I prefer my Paradise paints but I don't want to chop up the paints in that palette. I might try the Kryolan or Wolfe.

Made a few rainbow and split cakes in the little rectangle 'wolfe pallet' containers. Then went to a Guild Meeting to play around with them!

Loving them so far! Need to practise on leaves though using that technique. I ordered her video so maybe that'll help.

I've got eye issues again, so I'll have to wait a few days before I can paint myself. But these split cakes/rainbows are fun fun fun!

True - my Snaz did not hold up as well as a split once I put more than two colors in a small container. The colors just don't have the same brilliance of the creamier/thicker texture of Paradise, Wolfe or Kryolan. My homemade Snaz splits tend to mush or overblend as they require more water to activate.

I kind of like the over-blending though. My only concern with my wolf rainbow cake is that it doesn't blend enough. I like to have a nice gradual fade.

You are right about that Angie. The Wolfe/DFX doesn't really create the color between the two in the rainbow cakes like other brands. I guess this is an advantage and disadvantage depending on what you are trying to create. It tried to create a neon rainbow with just the three colors and it just didn't look as nice as my five color cake . The neons although lovely don't blend at all and have to be applied VERY carefully.

I love my Kryolan neon rainbow cake!!!! It does amazing things!!! Guess I need to get it out and submit something to our April challenge!!

Here is my pallet and set up on a oak tv tray. This the compact version of my paints to travel to gigs with. I was painting and in my haste, I put the pallet on the tray upside down for this photo as I usually have the eight small pots facing me.

I have lots of combinations in the small box (thanks for the inspiration Metina!) and small pots for brush work. Many are similar to the arty brushstrokes combinations but with smaller strips of black so it doesnt overpower the colors. I use a #12 to 16 brush instead of a three quarter or one inch brush for most of my cheek designs, like the baby dragon. That box is perfect for brush loading with only about 2ml of paint in it so I can lean the brush against the divider, away from the black, so just a bit gets on the edge of the brush.

I added lots of sparkling colors (thanks Metina!) to my electric & regular classic ones, half n' half for better coverage. I have dedicated colors in the rounds for the gold crown base, sunset, butterfly, leopard and tiger square just above it. Many small strips of colors are in the other square pots for brush work or added colors for dimention in sponge work.

One Stroke or double loading brushes isnt just for flowers. Since I began FP, I love to use the sponge brushes for better control as seen in the orange ogre mask. Also my baby dragon to the left - yup, double loaded greens & #12 brush created that, too.

I got into FP with a rainbow cake and Im still making up more combinations! I love adding more base colors with the speed of a few taps of the loaded sponge, then do the line work and finished! I never did have the patience to add each color seperatly with different sponges. This is my Rainbow Switch Tiger.

Sherry, I found the 12x11" plastic pallet at Michaels art & Craft store for under five bucks with a coupon and it had plenty of room for lotsa paint, yet it didn't take full cakes to fill the sections. I reinforced the bag it came in with clear packing tape as a cover for the pallet that can take tough use in travel.
I have several small Metina-type small boxes for more color combinations. They are semi clear and look kinda messy as I only have about 2ml of paint in each section, so I think I will turn the box upside down and spray paint it black to make it look neater.
I only wish the big pallet was black, too! It looks positively sanitary when cleaned, but real messy with lotsa use ; / I found a dry paper towel cleans it up nicely when the paints are dry. Cleaning it up when paints are wet is a lost cause of smears!

I mainly make rainbows (pastel, plain, metallic etc) and striped cakes for dolphins. Some fit in my pro box in old Paradise pots; others are in a line of little square boxes with flip lids I found in a craft store- prefer them to the individual boxes I used to have as they are all stuck together - harder to lose!

All my kit is 'split' like your original post except black, white and red, as I cut down to just 2 paradise pro palettes (filled with my own brands/ mixes) so just folded cakes double and stuffed 2 per paradise pot to fit!

I find having similar colours in a pot helps - things like Wolfe/ DFX gold split with Kry. Aquac. Kupfer as you get the strength of the Wolfe and the rich colour of the Kryolan with a swirl of your brush. I do tend to try and make rainbow/ split cakes out of the same brands incase they react with different brands tho...

re Snaz, its not ALL plastics it eats; it especially liked Grimas containers tho! And yes the Snaz pro palettes are wayyyy too flimsy round the edges/ lids.

I only have a recent photo of my travelling kit ( so no tall chair, banners, matching tablecloth etc, sigh...) which I'm using as I tour NZ but have put that in my album- I'll try to download some of my more 'normal' set up but think I only have old pics on the web (not my laptop either!).
