Baby Cakes! Empty Baby Cakes!

Post by MelindaT0813 Mon May 16, 2011 10:48 am

Finally got around to making own baby split cakes!I am so happy about them!
Tiny Rainbows, Flowers, fire, butterflies and leaves are MINE for the making! Very Happy!!!
Baby Cakes! Clearw20
I used an empty eye shadow container and arranged them so that I could swipe without hitting another cake.
I used left over paint that I had saved from making my last spit cakes.
Baby Cakes! Clearw21

I think I am sated. No more split cakes for a while.... maybe Smile

Super cute!

You'll use those babies up quickly so keep them off of your "Choice Boards" or "Look Books" or whatever we are calling them these days Smile

Otherwise you'll be refilling that thing every week!

I did a few rainbows tonight and so far it looks untouched. There isn't much paint in there but hey, it isn't like you would be covering a face with them. Just small cute details Smile

There so cute, and just the right size for little little girls and boys. What size brush do you think covers one cake? and I'm sure this is already prominent but you prefer a square cake over a round?

Well great job! I need to get some of my ideas out there... Rolling Eyes

Square or rectangle defiantly. I dislike round cases they never wear evenly and the squarish ones are SOOOOOOOOOO much easier to load.

Also, not sure exactly what size brush in terms of inches but I would think a half inch or smaller. You can see how big the cakes are compared to the penny so you can compare it to your brushes. Sorry I can't be more help, I wish I knew more lol

So teeeny tiny, great idea about arranging them so when you swipe you don't pick up any of the other colour splits. Genius.

Yea, making the rainbow one was not that hard at all! None of them were actually. I grabbed some paint, rolled it out using saran wrap. I rolled it to the length and thinness I wanted and then just put it in Smile.
It went by pretty quickly, maybe a half an hour tops. Then again, I knew exactly what I was going to make.

As for the position of them Mandi, trust me, I am not as smart as ya think. At first I put them all next to each other and when i swiped my first rainbow it put a bunch of colors (I didn't want) all over the ones directly next to it.
GRRRRR....
I used my trusty exacto knife to pop them on out and left a space.
PERFECT!!!! Except... I happened to make 2 split cakes that went in the opposite directions as the others.
What to do...
A little rearranging latter and that it the set up I was left with.
I don't particularly like how the empty slots LOOK... but hey, it works.

Baby Cakes! Empty split cakes

Post by Letmepaintyou Wed May 18, 2011 8:20 am

ok, I'm jealous! those are adorable. Here is my question to all of you home made split cakers...I'm still on my first kit of paints from Snaz, its a large one....and I want to try making split cakes, but I'm afraid to use the colors because its all I have right now...there are a few I find that I don't use at all, but I'm not sure if I could make a good cake without some of my main colors, in the larger circles..but I don't want to cut them up...ugh. Do you start making your own when you start buying more kits? I can't afford to buy a whole other kit yet, so I get colors here and there..and bought my first rainbow arty cake the other day...love it! I want more!

Letmepaintyou-
You don't need to buy a kit. Just buy 2-3 new 30g of paint cakes (about $7 per color, rather than $40+ for a kit). My first attempt at making split cakes I used Snaz, and it ended rather horridly. Everything crumbled like mad. I waited a bit, splurged on arty cakes and rainbow cakes and then tried again with Diamond FX. Personally, I found the Diamond FX 200x easier, but my end results were still nowhere near perfect (this might just be b/c like everything else with facepaint, making splits requires practice).

TAG works nicely and is *way better(imo)* (and cheaper) than snaz.
Metina sells 'em, look in the shop.

Also, you don't want to just put random colors together to make a split cake.

Yea, you'll have a split cake, but you will never use it.

Have an idea in mind, for example a rose split cake, or a leaf or rainbow, so on and so on.
Basically, just have a plan.

Now, you don't have to just cut it up, you can scrape off a bit paint and put it in saran wrap. Use the saran wrap to shape it into a log and then once you have all the colors in line, use the saran wrap to push it down, make it level and smooth out the top.

Now, this could just me hating on snaz, but I found that it was pretty crappy for split cakes. I only used the metallic ones though, maybe that had something to do with it. Just took too long to load the sponge and it smeared the colors

You could also remove the paint from the container entirely, this is what I do. I use and exacto knife to remove the stuck on paint from the side of the container and cut it in half. Then I use a bendy plastic knife to pry it free from the container, a half at a time. It doesn't matter if it crumbles, you'll press it all together like playdough using the saran wrap.

From there I cut till I am done then grab the left over paint and use the saran wrap to roll it in the ball. I put the ball into the middle of the empty container and then use a ZIPLOCK bag to mold it back into the container. 2 pieces of saran wrap will also do, but basically you just want a layer ol plastic covering the paint and another on top that makes it easy to slide you fingers across the surface to even it out.

I gave it a go, I used an old powder container and made 4 splits in it, fire, rose, ocean and leaf. They're not as adorably small as yours but it fits in my handbag for spontaneous practice, I also put my the wolfe white and black from my first ever essentials palette into a small eyeshadow container for linework. I cut up a few bath sponges and I have a small spray bottle for water. I don't know why I didn't think of this before!

All of the paint in the splits, except the pink and purple which are wolfe, are Snazaroo (I've heard it eats through some plastic... But I'll try my luck with that, it's just for use on me anyhow...)
