Honestly, I hope she doesn't come here because, without a doubt, her dagger tossing fandom will come on her heels and nothing good ever results when this forum is used as a verbal battlefield. I too wish she'd handled it better. Oh well right?

I totally agree!!! I did not see her facebook comments as I only friend people whom I've talked to, met, 'know' online, or who message me with a comment and send a friend request with it. I don't do 'friend farming'. I have seen and loved this particular artist's work. From what I've read here (almost exclusively I may add) and the evidence I've seen (perfectly unbiased and professional review AND an honest evaluation of a class by MORE THAN ONE individual) that is being attacked.....I think that the artist in question would have a silly fit over this thread as well.

I have to say that I am disheartened. In life we have sometimes childish notions....pretty people should be good people, old ladies are always kind and grandmotherly, handsome young men should be heroic, etc. Someone who creates such fantastic and inspiring work and is 'together' and 'with it' enough to be able to self publish should be professional and level headed. I'm a bit sad that this appears to not be so.

I second that this thread would be further fuel to a negative fire, and I doubt highly that this would provide a 'light bulb' moment so much as a pure emotional outburst of hurt, pain and fury at the non-believers. I must say that I kinda feel bad for her. At this point, her attack has caused her so much negative publicity. I cannot be the only one who having no real opinion about the individual before, other than a faceless person who does great art, has a not-so favorable opinion now. The irony? If she had simply cried privately, picked herself up and dusted herself off I would still feel the same as before AND had the opportunity in the future to have a POSITIVE opinion at a later date. Not sure this will happen now without some kinda "Whoops! sorry to all my fans and friends....had a melt down, I'm only human.....lotsa stress but I won't make excuses, appologies to those I lashed out to" statement on her part.

I cannot say I would go out of my way to meet her at this point.

I agree with you Kim, I have not seen the comments, but I gather that they have not been flattering to the reputations of those who made them. It is pretty sad comentary on human nature really. It used to be that we had our little hissy fits alone, or with our spouses in the "off hours" when it was too late to use the phone, and it would be improper for us to call anyone after 10:30 or 11 PM(yes, long ago, and we already established that I wear grandma's bra)...so we would stew about our issues at home and rumminate our snappy answers and comebacks in our heads and bounce them off someone who was a safety valve before we unleashed them on the world. Now, we are connected 24 hours a day, and can bounce our cudd out the door without any feedback at all. Unwise. With just a little cooling off, most of us were able to keep from circling the wagons and shooting inward when we had time to think about the direction our words would go...a little time is a precious thing. Write hot, send cold.

Exactly.

Which, BTW, is how I wrote the review. I always write them and then sit on them for a couple days, then go back and read it over... there is always something to edit before publishing!

Oh... and my blog hits spiked over this too... Laughing Laughing

I think the wise person can still learn from her. She is a talented painter and she has a warm and likable personality. There is, as we now know, another facet that we can learn from. All of us have that side, but we have had the good fourtune (and good sense!) that our most humiliating outbursts have not been memorialized in real time over multiple time zones. I can only imagine the depth of that kind of "oh crap, did I really say that?" remorse. That is not to say that it was not of her own making, just that we all make mistakes, we all do things in life that are social and business blunders, and most of us would like to have the chance to fix them when we make them, if only those around us were nice enough to give us the chance to save face.

As an artist, I am going to learn what I can from her. As a person, I already knew what she taught us. It is far easier in life to just say "Oh, I messed up" because in the long run, "fault" and "blame" don't change outcome at all, but when somebody just says "I screwed up" or "you are right!" then you take the wind out of any critic's sails, and a solution to any issue is found sooner. I have empathy for her; she must be having a difficult time right now. I hope, for her as a person, that she learns that, but I hope that for all women to learn that sooner than I did in life. It just makes life easier. I am not sure Men ever learn it (sorry if I offend any men...they don't tick like we do anyway, so for most of them, it is not as big an issue!)

Frankly, in the "no publicity is bad publicity" ring, I have spent more time looking at her designs and I am more interested in her book now than I was before the whole thing. I read Shannon's review. Not really interested... Then, looked deeper because of the broohaha. I kinda want to know how she tripple loads a brush...

Tripple loading is pretty simple...just dip your brush a 3rd time into a darker/complimentary color...think candy corn.

I like to consider myself a wise woman, but I'm one who values every minute that I spend with my attention focused on things other than my kids (who are growing like weeds). The result of this is that my daughter is no longer growing like a weed because I'm focusing more of my attention on her (unfortunately, I didn't do this for my first borne and I feel like I missed a good 14 years of his life as a result of focusing on things that didn't matter). That being said, I don't WANT to focus any of my energy on learning from somene who has such a conditional regard for her fanbase. Nothing short of a public apology to the people that her antics have affected will stem the tide of damage she has inflicted. I find it really hard to learn from anyone who feels that they are above being taught and there are too many artists who I respect more at the present moment.

Cool! I knew someone would tell me how to tripple load without me having to buy a book Laughing I was pretty sure, but had not played yet. I don't think any time you spend painting is wasted if you make the most of it. In the long run, we probably will not be seeing her in Ohio sunny We should concentrate on getting someone to come to Ohio, someplace that is in between Cleveland and Columbus, and have them be super duper cool and wonderful...I finally made it to the Columbus Guild! Maybe pull from Chicago, Detroit, etc....hmmmm?

That has been the biggest issue with the Guilds...finding a nice middle ground meeting place. Margi and I are still brainstorming about it...sigh. It would be nice to have a little convention HERE, but if the rumors are true, there may be a convention starting up in Indiana or Illionois...heck, I'd even take Michigan.

I'm glad you could finally hook up with the Columbus Guild though. I don't mind driving down to Columbus at all! There's always instructors going there, so I'll probably meet you this summer! It would be great if we could get Jay Bautista up here! Pashur's almost a yearly staple. Last year Wiser came as well as Marcela. Keep your apendeges crossed!

First point - I agree. She, however, was milking it on FB. And... there was nothing to go into hyper-freak about anyway.

Second point - just like Lady Jayde said... triple load, load in one colour, dip in second, the just the tip in the third. Not a secret, nothing new, plain old triple loading that craft painters have been doing for eons. We can probably find a how to somewhere on the inter-webs - Donna Dewberry perhaps?

Look up Donna Dewberry on YouTube or any tole painting references... they will explaing triple loading, probably in a lot more detail.

BTW... all that is in the book about this is 4-5 small (less than 1 inch square) photos with some written instructions across the top of the page, with the other 3-4 brush techniques on the same page. The blurb does lead one to believe there is more to it than that.

After reading this thread I had to go back on FB and find all the comments. How absolutely stupid and silly the whole thing turned out! Childish, inaccurate, uninformed comments posted for the world to see--over a topic that was blown way out of proportion. If Shannon's honest review can be labeled 'hateful', then boy, I missed something for sure when I looked that word up in the dictionary! Do people not understand what a review is? Geez! Grow a pair! I receive harsher criticism from my preschool-aged children--on a daily basis. Deal with it!

Sorry for the harshness--I can't stand a pity party--especially when the crowd gets too big.

Childish, inaccurate and uninformed is so nail on the head it's not funny! This assumption shared by the general fandom that "if you don't think such-and-such walks on water and farts roses, it's because you're jealous of him/her". I mean...really? If I ever aspired to do a book I'd hope that I'd only have that type of negative critique! I mean...if I receive a critique that still makes me sound fabulous and still reccomends my book (to a certain face painting demographic) then I'd fix the flaws and kick butt the next time around. Now the negativity is going to follow this artist all because she wanted it ALL. She knew she was going to be getting a review...the problem is that she wasn't expecting an objective one. I'm sitting here with Bec's book, a copy of the Illusions and Friends book and one of the Wolfe Brother's Cheat books in hand...If I did a review using those other books as a litmus, .... well, I don't think it would be as supportive as Shannon's. Just sayin'...

I don't wish to further perpetuate the merry go round of this truely nonsensical issue, by looking up comments or trying to figure out the thoughts behind people's statements.

Shannon??? Do you stand by the review you gave?? If so, nuff said.

An exercise in decorum would have served well in this situation if nothing more than to teach people there is a proper and effective way to voice and get your point across without the character assassination typically associated with retaliatory comments.

People need to learn how not to bask in the non existent glow of their own perceived greatness for. A little humilty goes a long way. Everything you do no matter how well intentioned will not be to the taste or liking of every other person, which is why they refer to it as free will or free thinking. I have the choice to like or not to like, to agree or not to agree, to believe or not to believe.

Temper tantrums be it verbal or physical are rancorous and phlegematic at best and no purpose has ever been served by having one. If your thinking is anything other than that, than perhaps you might want to step outside of that bubble you are currently in.
