Have some free time coming up and thought it might be fun to try a new hobby slash business idea. You know all those store front windows with cute little designs painted on them for christmas? Anyone know what supplies they use? I was googling it and came across some info regarding usuing regular tempura paints but I couldnt find out what felt pens they use to draw the outlines first... any of you creative people know how to go about starting something like this? My house windows will become my hobby this holiday season I think !

I have painted windows and just used some hobby glue mixed into regular kids poster paint - dont think I did an outline first but you could use a light coloured whiteboard marker - like yellow? The stationery shop called "Smiggle", (are they just in Australia?), has markers especially for windows - colours are just gorgeous but i controlled myself and didnt buy them! Thankfully! Determined face paint and glitter collector here! haha

I always just used to layer the tempra paint. you have to do it in backwards order if you paint from the inside, I only used to do the windows for my classroom though and it was a pain to clean off too.

I was wondering about the same thing because a lot of our designs could translate into bigger designs.

This is an old post, but I am researching it and here in Calgary, with the Stampede every year, the windows are covered ...I found out people are charging 50-100 per window and they get it easily.

They use tempera and acrylic paint for the most, and some even add the cleaning to the cost so the business doesn't have to worry...

We are considering doing it...but probably not until closer to Christmas..

At SickKids, sometimes the teens just want everybody coming into their hospital room to go away. They don't want to be face painted. I will get some "WindowWriters" and show them how to write (just for example) "Lisa's Room, please knock" on the outside of the window along a line of tape I have taped to the inside of the window. Then, we move to the inside of the and remove the tape. Follow the words already written on the outside from the inside. Then, after the words are filled in... clean off the outside window.

I paintet Windows in my Prescool and for a shoe store, to outline fist, you can use waxcrayons for children in a light colour. The coulors I used are called gonistar, they dry a little transparent. But cleaning is not easy, we use such cutter for cleaning a ceranfield in the kitchen. Hope you know what I mean. I think you can also use other colours like tempera, try it first if the colour works on Windows an if you can clean the window after Wink

I like the tape idea to keep it level and straight...I would totally have to do the letters on the other side..doing it all backwards would be hard...

Well there is this markers that people use them to write at their car windows, I got the very wide tip at Michaell's , press them into a plastic container and use a brush to paint my windows at Halloween and christmas, I wish I have good pics of them so I will show you, my kids enjoy it and it gives a nice look, then I use windex and a paper towel to clean Very Happy

Funny I just did some research on this. '

Acrylic craft paint seems to be the go-to for durability. To remove spray it down with window cleaner and let it sit then use a sharp edges squeegee to remove.

I'm planning on trying it very soon Very Happy

My mom used to have big drawings as templates she taped to the outside of the window (and then painted the inside) for Thanksgiving and Christmas. She painted the inside in case of snow, I think.
Freehand, I saw someone just use a small brush with the Tempera paint and do the outline. Did not see him mess up at all so I do not know how he would "fix" a mistake...(Cinco de Mayo window on a Mexican restaurant).

I do window painting. I use both classic brush and airbrush.
Since we cut out own stencils I have a painter friend getting into windows who has asked us to cut her large size basis shapes. This really helps keep thing uniform from window to window.

I wonder if I paint my big sliding glass door if my dog will stop barking at everything that moves! She is an akita so has a very loud distinct bark, startles the poop out of me everytime! I thought about curtains or shades, but she'll just push them aside.

The side window in our dining room faces a neighbors' brick wall. I put drapes up, and I found 5 year old Madison climbing up the drapes. I am surprised she did not pull the curtain rod down on her head.
I painted the window with leaves and vines. It was effective for about 5 years before I was REALLY tired of it.
I found some translucent cling film in a frosted finish at WalMart. That was the end of my home window painting.
Years ago, I used to paint on windows and blackboards at restaurants using tempera paint. I always struggled with attempting to get a solid, non-streaky finish on my paints. I was forced to come up with decorative patterns to distract from the limitations of the tempera streakiness. That was over 30 years ago. There must be better paint out there, now.

I did windowpainting for my homeschooled kids as a craft one year. We did a heart on one and a cross on the other (we lived in a mobile home with a front kitchen, so they were the front windows). It was awesome. When we did it I read to put dishsoap IN the paint (tempra) and it came off very easily. I want to do this again, 10 years later, because I've improved my painting skills SO much! Maybe a front window advertisement on my house bay window? Is that tacky? cyclops

Your gingerbread men are very cute! The problem with window painting is people DON'T want to pay you what your time, talent and materials are worth Sooooo... when I go out to paint anymore I have a small set of clients and won't add to the list unless they won't blink at my pricing! Money up front - always!
