Offering Hair Art Empty Offering Hair Art

Post by Lynnie Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:11 am

I was just wondering how many of you offer any of the various hair arts in your booth or for parties. For those who don't know this could mean...

-Stencils
-Bling
-Braids/Twists/Crazy-do's
-Sticks
-Falls

It's a part of the body, and some of them are definitely art. I used to make/sell hair sticks and we currently offer bling (but haven't yet figured out good hype marketing). I've been asked to offer it next year at larger events but I think it would warrant it's own booth...maybe.

Any experience with it?

At festivals, I sell falls and do renaissance hair braiding and hair tinsel in addition to face painting and glitter tattoos. I don't offer the hair stuff locally because it's not very popular in my small town. My hair braiding goes over VERY well at festivals. I decorate the hair when I'm done with flowers and other bits and bobs from Hobby Lobby and my clients end up advertising for me because I make them stand out in a crowd. I'm usually very busy all day and all night. People end up knowing right where my booth is so they can come by first thing in the morning to have their hair done all day!

I've been looking at hair tinsel. It seems relatively inexpensive for startup cost & pretty easy to do. I love the feathers, but the start-up cost is a bit much.
I do bling up the birthday girl w/ gems & glitter gel. When I have a booth I upsell designs w/ gems & glitter gel. I ask every client if for $XX more would they like to upgrade to the blinged out design. Grandmas almost always go for it. I spent $20 at Michael's on scrapbook flower gems, hearts & swirls. I packaged them in snack ziplock bags in clusters & used my glitter tattoo glue for application. I wore a blinged out design as an example & even in the 100 degree heat it stayed most the day. I probably upsold about $300 on July 4th off my $20 investment & I still have a lot of gems left for parties.

We do the bling upsell too, Linda. We also upsell out glitter tats by offer to add paint for $XX more.

I like the hair bling/tinsel. We're doing well with it. Our hawkers are guys so they don't understand it so they have a hard time selling it. It's funny.

Thank you, Vashti! As a rennie myself, I know exactly what you're talking about and that's what I'm thinking. Thanks!

I don't offer it as a service, but I wear hair tinsel and LOVE it! I've had sparkly hair for nearly 2 years and aside from the first application, I've put them in myself. Occasionally one falls out during the first few days, but most stay for a month or two.

The trick is pull a strand or two of your hair through the tinsel loop, snug that up at the root, and double knot your hair with ONE of the tinsel strands, not both.

Kristal, I like the tip of with one of the tinsel strands. I've had mine for 3 weeks and I have super thin fine hair, and two of the 4 we put in is still there. The one tied in my hair by the demonstrator actually didn't last as long as the ones we put in. We've had to work on it a bit to get the hang of it but it's good now.
Getting that knot at the roots is really important to getting it to grip.

I love the look of the feathers, but have heard the roosters die to provide the feathers. I'm not a big animal rights person, but not to fond of killing a critter for fashion.... I didn't find any info on google to back up the claim.
