Mandi - I bet the baby wipe = used to swipe the area clean from paint.

Yes you are right, although he wrapped it around the end of a paintbrush to get a clean edge and fine point.

yeah the trick is to wrap it around the end of a brush and then make sure that you constantly change the tip when it starts to streak so that you are always using a clean part of the wipe. Then you just paint your lines back in.

This feels as though I am waisting my time...
but I painted it, so I might as well enter it.

I used:
round 4 for my brush

Paradise:
Red
Light Brown

Wolfe:
Black
White
Yellow

Step 1. Draw rodolph red nose where

Step 2. Drawn the bone and cartilage in white

Step 3. Cover it with uneven skin around the edges
so it looks more realistic.

step 4. Shade.

Step 5. say... "GOT YER NOSE!"

Wow. I can't wait to try some of these. Stupid blood and latex and skin colours are on back-order Evil or Very Mad Hopefully they arrive in time to have a go in this comp. And maybe by then I will have convinced myself its not about competing but about pushing out my own artistic boundaries... and I thought it was intimidating entering the last few comps Surprised I repeat Wow. Or Ow.

Post Submissions Here! - Page 2 Empty Boils. Ew.

Post by JBM Sat May 21, 2011 12:42 am

OK here goes. I'm very new to the special FX game but I wanted to create something that wasn't just copying something else I found on the net so I'd welcome input from some of the more experienced artists as I kinda made this up. This is about learning for me this month..
I wanted to create gross oozing boils that are sturdy enough to last for a costume party not just a photo shoot, so:
I USED:
Ben Nye Latex
Ben Nye Scab Blood
Tag Skin colour
Snaz White & Snaz Red and black
Marculan Pure Lanolin (had this in the cupboard from when I had bub, makes good pus)
2 cheap dollar store brushes (latex destroys brushes)
Some toilet paper
a round pen lid
a sponge
a pin
a no2 FP brush
Some mineral powder foundation

SBS:
1. do a patch test for latex to check for allergy - I did this on DH's arm 24 hr before I did the boils.
2. paint a thin layer of latex where you want boil.
3. Add a thin layer of toilet paper(only one ply of it)
4.repeat
5. put a dab of lanolin and blood the size you want your boil.
6.put toilet paper on top then using lid of pen to shape it as round rip the edge of the toilet paper off and put a thin layer of latex. Repeat until there is a decent layer over your blood and pus. Wait till latex is completely dry.
7.using the skin colour mixed with white blend the boil in to the skin around it
8. using a wash of red and black create an angry rim around the edge of boil
9. put a hole in the top of the boil - make sure it is big enough to get lots of the goo out.
10.squeeze and be grossed out!!

Next time I would add more puss than blood to make it oozier. I would also not do it on the palm of the hand as the latex edged were harder to blend. I just didn't want to do the latex over DH's arm hair and asking him to shave was pushing it.. other than that for winging it I pretty happy tongue
