Rectangle Paint Containers Empty Rectangle Paint Containers

Post by MelindaT0813 Tue Apr 12, 2011 10:45 am

Trying to make some big split cakes perfect for a sponge length wise
I HATE the circle containers that the paint comes in (it wear unevenly)
Anyone have an idea of something I can use to hold my new split cake?

I am near walmart and target and would like to, if possible pick it up today, locally.

Any ideas?

I have made them out of the little boxes that $1 travel sewing kits come in. You can use both sides (the bottom and the top) of the box.

You know, if a paint company out there decided to change their packaging to rectangular full sized cakes, I bet they'd make an awful lot of converts!

Paradise Prism split cakes come in good sized rectangular BLACK boxes! Love them boxes (not so much the split cakes yet, but I am working on it).

I but all my other little boxes at a place S&W Plastics, they are a small chain out here.

The pill containers would be too small for what i am trying to make. Sad

I need a large rectangle and/or square box with a lid for a large rainbow cake.

What do you guy think about an altoids box?
It is like the perfect size

But... I hate that it is an altoids box lol rofl

A couple a months ago I discovered this little watercolor that come in a rectangular plastic case with lid, you can find them at party city but don't use snazaroo paint because snazaroo has some ingredient that will deteriorate the clear plastic.

here is the link to that post HTH

I Couldn't find the watercolos at party city in a big pack, only individually. But I did find mini playing cards that come in a plastic case. They the same dimension but slightly deeper (just shy of 2 cm.) and no round hangers @ the top. I'll bet you could find a regular sized deck in a plastic case too if you wanted a larger size. Or a travel soap dish?

Hahaha Sophie, I am so anal that when I 1st saw them at party city and didn't but them because of that little hanging thingy but I went back and got them, I used a sharp knife to make a slight cut where the container and the hanging thing meet and they snapped right off.

I got them!!! Paint is cut! Split Cakes made.
Will post pics soon
Question:
Maggie, are the lids of your containers loose?
Mine are, I wish they fit more snuggly...
I am thinking about putting maybe some tape around the edge, what do you think?

So happy!!!!!!!!!!!
Those stupid round containers! How I hate them so....
IT IS SO MUCH EASIER TO LOAD MY SPONGE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought the following cakes to cut up:
Neons> Pink,Orange,Yellow,Green, Light Blue(wolfe) Purple ((all wolfe))
Metallic> Cherry Bomb Red(Paradies), Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple ((the other colors are wolfe))

In Kyrolan I bought Baby Blue, Pink and Purple.

After everything is said and done I ended up with

Yellow/Green Neon
LightBlue/Purple Neon
Orange/Pink Neon

Yellow/Green Metallic
Blue/Purple Metallic
Red/Orange Metallic

3 Neon Rainbow Split cakes
3 Metallic Split Cakes
5 Purple/Pink/baby blue Split cakes

Metallics are HORRIBLE to cut!!! HORRIBLE.
Powdery and just doesn't stick together.
I ended up scooping the color out into some saran wrap and then pressing it together before I cut it.
I then just molded into the space alloted.

Neons were pretty powdery too (I am used to Kryo and Para) but they were a dream compared to those metallics!

They look great!

I find them so easy to cut, I have either dfx . If I have a crumbly cake I spray it over night, next morning it is easy to cut.
I got neons but have not cut them yet.

Oh,I forgot to tell you that if you want to remove the hanging thing on the container pass a knife couple of times and snap them off with your fingers.

My watercolor kits from Party City, de-hanger-thinged in foam I laboriously cut for hours (or so it seemed)
These are not all my paints - just the DFX/Tag/Snaz. I have another palette of Paradise. You can see my setup in my gallery.

Dumb question, but why do so many painters want the black sponge thing to hold the paints in place? The vast majority of you do, so I am missing something important here.

I velrox mine in because I can get so much more into the pallette. But, I am in a vast minority. So, why do you guys like to use them?

I tried Velcro and hated it. I don't like the spongy give when I press down, and if I had used multiple strips to eliminate the rocking when I rubbed, then it would have taken that much more time to dig and rip them out when I want to hand-hold the paints. I find the sound of Velcro ripping very irritating as do my kids, LoL. LOVE the 'snap' of the magnets. I magnetized the rest of my kit.

And as far as getting more paint onto the palette - I did the math on the area of the rectangle vs the circle container. The DFX container was 4.12 sq inches, the rectangle 3.86 sq inches. I get 18 of the rectangles in of the laptop, vs the 12 I could fit in before. The foam between them is less than 1/4".

I was able to compress what used to cover both halves of the laptop, into just one, and still represent all the colors. Some of the paints (DFX) are just for line work - so I didn't mind giving them less real estate. I can always replenish with the bits I have left in the discs.

Also, I couldn't STAND the mess in my laptop. With the paints teetering on their velcro pad,s little bits of everything could get down and around them. Meant I had to pull the whole thing apart to clean it, which of course I never did so it was demoralizing.

I used the Snaz 54 color pro palette for three years, so I am comfortable with a tray, things not moving around, order and things lined up with military precision. With the foam I'm less tempted to fiddle with placement, and muscle memory is soooo important to me - I want to reach and let my hand find what it knows is there. Rectangle Paint Containers Img_1916

Lily, what are the circular trays toward the back of your setup that have small amount of something in them? I've never seen though before.

Question for you? Snaz? In the clear plastic boxes - not having any plastic dissolving issues?

@Noella - I hot-glued some foil into to the container for the Snaz cakes. If there is some horrible contraindication to that, I'll try something else.
