New Kit Needed! Empty New Kit Needed!

Post by Kristal Sat Mar 14, 2009 7:52 pm

I'm planning on buying a bunch of new Kryolan paints, which means that it's time to look for a new kit to hold everything! (If I put ANY more paints in my current one, it'll explode!)

I'm currently using a Black and Decker toolbox. It's got the extra removable tray inside, and a flip top with a bunch of different compartments for my glitter/hair clips/business cards etc. I love it, and would definitely consider buying another (obviously larger) toolbox, but I'm curious to know what you're using to cart everything around, and how you like what you're using?

MasterCraft Rolling toolbox from Canadian Tire. It is my second one as I dropped the first one in -34C and it shattered the handle!

Ack! That's freezing!

Jessica, are you talking about that 4 in 1 rolling workshop? That opens up like a tackle box and is AMAZING? I may be in love with it...

That said, love can be rather fickle, and $100 is pretty steep for a new kit (esp considering the money going to be spent on filling said kit!) I also found this one...: http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443285547&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672972&bmUID=1237193712373

I love that the upper toolbox is removable! Shannon, is this the one you have?

Yuppers. Exactly...

I looked at the Fat Max but it just is too bloody big and I like the way I set up now - I'm not one to carry everything I own to a gig just in case, just what I need to do what I was specifically hired for.

I need a kit that will hold my Pro-22 palette. Anyone found something like that? I usually use my rolling cart (below) but I need a smaller carrying case for traveling.

Hi Angie,

I carry a case similar to the Snazz 22 palette and I keep mine in a rectangular, short-ish rubbermaid/sterilite type container.

Like this but shorter:
http://www.target.com/Sterilite-66-qt-ClearView-Storage-Box/dp/B000AV3RDG/sr=1-10/qid=1237292432/ref=sr_1_10/188-0453331-7546069?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&index=target&field-browse=1038576&rh=k%3Asterilite&page=1

I can put my paint palette at the bottom with its lid on, and pile all the rest of my stuff on top of the palette lid. Very fast set up for me Smile

I copied this idea from someone- Kerry Anne I believe. I keep the palette in the bin while painting to keep hands out of the paints

Thanks Michelle, I'll see if I can find something similar here. If I could find a shallow storage bin wide enough for my palette, that would be perfect.

Oookay - so I went to Studio F/X yesterday, and walked out with: Kryolan UV-Dayglow in: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple, as well as the Interferenze Strauss Wine and Bach Blue...ahhh! Thank goodness I remembered to get registered for the industry discount, haha. I made my rainbow cake today! VERY exciting.

Which also means I need to buy that new kit soon...no point in having new paints to play with if I can't take them with me! I have a hot date with Canadian Tire on Friday...

I made myself a rainbow cake with the Kryolan UV colours last week! It really stands out! I had one from silly farm but I wanted more colours in it. My daughter loves it too.

Is Studio FX still in Royal Centre? I always stop there and drop a bundle when I'm in Vancouver.

It is! It's so easy to watch the $ pile up in there, isn't it?! Haha. I bought one of those car wash (peanut) sponges too, and played with those + the rainbow - fun! Still am on the lookout for those round sponges mentioned in the other thread. When you were in the Lower Mainland, where did you get yours/see them?

My sister got some for me from Stampede Feed & Tack in Cloverdale I think... I source them all over! The local tack store doesn't carry them anymore so I have to get creative.

I actually didn't start FP until I moved up here. While I was in the Lower Mainland I was doing make-up for theatre, film & photography... then when I got up here there wasn't much market for that so I started face painting.

So I bought a rolling tool box from Canadian Tire - similar to yours, Shannon. I LOVE IT!! I'm transferring things over right now, and there is SO much room left - that's just an invitation to buy more things, haha. Thinking of how to decorate the outside. I also bought a pack of those sponges at a tack store - $8.99 for a dozen, but still way cheaper than what Studio FX prices their sponges at.

:inlove: hahaha

This is all great, but you have got to check out Angie's cart in her gallery. It rolls right from her car to the gig without having to "set up" each time.

I have found the shelving unit at home depot with the price reduced to $19.99 from $30. The caster wheels are almost $19, which makes no sense, but now all I need is the handle and a few other bits to get me up and running.

I think this is awesome for cutting down set-up time!

Thanks Metina, and what a great deal to get one for $20!! Here are some "detailed" pics of my cart so you can see all the features. I really love it. I stand to paint so I needed something taller than a tool box provides, and wanted it to be pretty much an "instant" working station.

So cool Angie!!

Did you check out the beauty/hair/salon carts before making your own? I've seen some of those that are quite similar...

Yes, I spent literally HOURS looking at salon carts, medical carts, every kind of cart you can think of. LOL. The salon carts were so expensive. I think they might work better but I couldn't afford one and I was wary of the small rolling wheels. I knew I'd need big rugged "off road" wheels on my cart. LOL. But I loved the accessories that you could get to go on the sides of those carts. I'm all about the add-ons!

This is great, Angie! I esp. love the hooks on the bottom to hold your sample board. Is that plastic or plexiglass on the sides?

I take it that you have to lie it down in your car to travel? And what do you have in the plastic drawers? Now I want a cart, haha. I don't think it's quite as practical for me - but I want it all!
