so I was messing around with youtube overdosing on butterfly tutorials, trying different techniques and I started just messing around and practicing my line work on my head. This is what I ended up with after a few tries. This is the first time I have done a design without an example of what I wanted in front of me. I know my line work sucks and I don't like the lips but let me know what you think. What can be improved?

I see not so much wrong in your lines...just make sure you have a really thin beginning or else cheat and go back from thick to thin ...what blach did you use? doesn't seem to cover very good...other than that it's really good! maybe soften the edges of the colours with a dry sponge a bit..

I think your right on with this design. A little line work practice is all it needs. A little tip, for designs you want to get a picture of, save the glitter till after the photo shoot. Your design will look bolder. Sometimes the glitter will make it look wet or reflect too much light & hide the design. It's not too bad in this pic, but will help you from losing a great shot in the future.
This is also true for anything done for theatre. Nutcracker, one year, a whole bunch of girls from another studio came with silver glitter eye make-up. From the seats, they looked like their eyelids were splashed with water Very Happy

I know this may sound strange but I would try to incorporate your eyebrow into the designs as one of the swirls, since you are using black for your line work. It just kinda looks like misplaced line...you know what I mean????

I hate eyebrows when it comes to face painting, they are my pet peeve. Why do we even have eyebrows??? I mean really. I know biology says they are to keep things from getting into our eyes ....how's that working out for you???? not so much for me, always getting something in my eye...lolol

Other than the already stated about cleaner lines I like the design. Very Happy

It looks nice to me, yeah a little practice with the lines... looks like you're actually going a little slowly with them? Fussing too much can make them shaky looking? Of course, the design is far more detailed than I generally do... so many tiny lines and little dots. It looks nice, I just don't take that much time on the little stuff.

I hate eyebrows too, lol. I usually try to keep my linework away from them, either slightly above or below, because of how often they junk it up.

Changing faces you are hilarious! And your right, I get stuff in my eyes all the time. I need ALOT of work on my lines, especially on me. ohh and I used Snaz black, I had it out for Miss Kim ( my beauty school drop out head) it stains less on her

Not to bad on the design. I tend to choke a bit when I try to come up with something, but it just takes practice. As for line work, Practice, paint consistency... and Confidence! Let go of worry when you put a line down, or else it will show. It's very Zen, this painting business.

lol. "The Zen of Face Painting" Sounds like a new book to me.Most of the time I am fine but some times all of a sudden I get really nervous, I don't know why. I am also horrible at painting myself.

Yah, when I doodle - great lines. When I am actually trying to do a design on someone else somehow my lines become mush! I really like how you pulled an additional wing design from the corner of the eye and used the tricolor for the lips as well.
