I have been dreading trying a Giraffe. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Daizy's Giraffe but I don't think I could pull off anything remotely as fine and never in a PPF or birthday party situation....so I tried a simplified version but there's something bugging me about it...and I can't get the mouth area right at all....I wiped it off and redid it 3 times (had to pay Evan extra for that Rolling Eyes). Can you see what I could do to make it better? I've been staring at it too long.

So Stacia, I am a newbie, having never painted anyone but my own grandchildren but I think he is darling and youa re so close. Can't figure out what would help but seriously I would pay to have that on one of my bunch.

That is super cute!!!!

I think you're right, it's something about the muzzle.
Looking at my inspiration file to find Daizy's giraffe again (WOW!), I find A.) You did an excellent job, and B.) The shape of her giraffe's mouth is spot on. It looks very realistic. It curves near the lips, and has a rounded chin.

I wouldn't change it. It looks very much like a giraffe.

No one, ever, has asked me for a giraffe.

I would say to make the ears rounder and coming out more to the side of the horns and the chin more oval, not pointed.

If you take another look at that awesome giraffe done by Daizy, you can see that the chin is quite a bit less pointed. The lines she used on the upper part of the face curve in the opposite direction from yours and she kinda hinted at lips with the lines curving outward at the mouth. Those are the major differences that I can see. You've set yourself a high mark to shoot for! Wish I had one tenth her talent!

Thank you so much for the critique and for the compliments ladies! I have been asked for a giraffe ONE time in the past and I talked the kid into a tiger instead because I wasn't prepared and, to be quite honest, terrified of trying it on the spot. The whole reason I'm finally tackling it is because I have a Madagascar 3 birthday party AT the theater (the kids dad is the manager and having a private showing for his birthday boy).
I'm definitely going to aim for a more oval shape for the chin, and the ears...I think you're totally right Shannon...that pic is an awesome reference for the ears.

Martha...those lips are I think where I went wrong for sure...I almost want to just go for a mask look instead because that mouth/muzzle thing is gonna drive me crazy.

I reckon its the colour..If it was a bit darker it would not blend in to the whole design so much BUT it is a fantastic little giraffe...

I have a giraffe on my chooser board. I haven't yet been asked for it at festivals, but at a birthday party I did, the seven-year-old birthday girl went for it right away, and then last week at another children's party, a younger child asked for it. It's nice to have a bright yellow design on the board.

I paint giraffes pretty often actually, BUT mine is not a mask design... it's a full body of a giraffe on their cheek with the neck going up next to their eye and the head on their forehead eating leaves from a branch on their forehead.

I like yours and I think most people would be very happy with that if they asked for a giraffe.

Stacia, I think this is a cute, simple, and quick giraffe design. Check it out.

I used to do a giraffe similar to yours, Perry... when I strictly did cheek art... although mine didn't go up that high.

And Stacia... that giraffe is cute. I do agree that there needs to be a contrast in the mouth area... just mix a tiny bit of brown with the yellow for contrasting/shading.

Your giraffe is super cute, I would point the ears out a little, and sponge over the muzzle with a contrasting color, like white or brown and also to the inside or outside of the ears.

Post by Who B What E Sun Jun 17, 2012 6:54 am

I was just asked yesterday if I could do a giraffe! I didn't have a clue! It was after I was done facepainting though, so I didn't' actually have to come up with one. I think it looks great, just maybe go a little darker on the muzzle or do some shading around it. Does anyone have a link to Daisy's giraffe?

Very cute giraffe! My only comment would be towards the chin, I would suggest making it a bit more rounded, but other than that I think it looks fabulous Very Happy
