Re: Thinking of adding Butterfly/ fairy wings...
Silly Izzy - that's one of the videos I saw too when I first started.
BluAngL - hmm I don't know about a youtube, I could try, but my camera and lighting is so so, maybe a slide show version...
I am going to be forced into putting on a workshop, maybe in the next month or so, wonder if someone has a video camera...
Tash -
Jbax - the basics Are easy! I just get meticulous with the decorating part
thanks again everyone for the praise

How'd it go Suzy? Are they done yet?
Re: Thinking of adding Butterfly/ fairy wings...
they are ugly. I got un-inspired as I was decorating them... and just wanted to start over. I made a mistake using a big ol brush with glue on it to put glitter on it and they just look messy... If you could give me designing tips I would appreciate it... anyhow...my embarrassment for today............

Re: Thinking of adding Butterfly/ fairy wings...
cool! I like the gobs of jems on the inside. I might make similar clusters maybe above your pink dots. One thing I do sometimes is draw in the colour I plan on painting the design I want to use on one wing, then hold the opposite wings together and draw the same pattern on the other so they match (kind of, it's never perfect) Which now makes me realize I decorate the wings before I attach them all together, not sure how much of a difference that makes
the bottom line of gems looks either too straight or lonely. Maybe at least a couple more lines radiating from the same focus, different lengths?
More glitz is more, it's OK with fairy wings to be over the top cluttered, it's more eye catching
keep going! I want to see it done!

Do you make them in mini baby sizes? My daughter's 1st birthday is coming up and those would be adorable on her.
I met a lady at my last party who makes these really beautiful tulle skirts. She folds the tull over to create a thick puffy layer and puts holographic shaped confetti in between the layers. I asked her to contact me about trading services ...I hope she actually calls me
I have done some itty bitty sized yes
OOOOOOOOOH this is sooooo sweet, sweet, sweet. Your wing making is outstanding, I'm in awe of you Metzpah. I do alot of crafty things but have never tried this. You have started some creative juices flowing, I'm off the the youtube site Izzy put up to check it out.

i made a bunch of these skirts for my daughters 4th birthday. made them as the party favors for all the girls. you can also take apart silk flowers and put the petals sandwiched between the layers, it is super easy to make them, the gathering just takes a bit of time. i tacked wide satin ribbon on the sides adn back and then they tied in a bow.
just google tulle princess or fairy skirts and you should find lots of variations

Acrylic... such an evil word on a face painting site
OK, it's safe for fairy wings. I tried to make some out of hangers & didn't get past the bending part. I may try again...

Yes I was a little tentative saying the "a" word, but it's on the section of the boards that have nothing to do with faces!

so do you have any tips on bending hangers more easily, or do you buy different gauge wire in rolls from the store?

Re: Thinking of adding Butterfly/ fairy wings...
do you use wire tools? I have tons of them from beading the wine glasses I paint. Or is it easier to use your hands.
I totally doing this for my sisters and my hair bow craft thing we do in the fall/winter.
Metzpah: your wings are amazing. I want a pair, but i only have boys. But get ready when i have a girl, I will be all over you for those things.

Re: Thinking of adding Butterfly/ fairy wings...
Become one with the wire.
Afraid I just use my fingers, not sure I have a trick other than the practice of having done so many wings and finding out how the wire acts during the process. I do buy rolls from the hardware store, I think it's usually 16 gauge, but I have used 14 gauge too, it's pretty stiff, but keeps it's shape just a little better. The 16 is very close to clothes hanger weight. Using the rolls is usually better as it starts out straighter. Since this thread started I have been practicing bending wire hangers back into shape at work and wondering why the boss says once they are bent too much, to throw them out.
If it's keeping the wings the same shape for each side, the trick is to bend them into shape at the same time, holding them together. It's never perfectly the same but at least it helps.

Re: Thinking of adding Butterfly/ fairy wings...
I buy electric fencing wire to make mine get the heaviest gauge you can find, no fighting coat hangers for me

Mostly, I have used black, brown and navy too, but white is best for getting the brightest other colours. I don't often find funky stocking colours to start with.

do you have a picture of those wings finished?shandi wrote:the green ones where finished in the same leaves as the tunic, my elf/fae costume
