brand of face paint for under stage lights
I know there's experienced people with plays and others who live in a hot climates so wondering in your experience what brand of paint will stand up the best under hot stage lights?

Any work. I use all of them. Even Snaz holds up well for a 2-hour show.

It depends really on what the actors are doing. I did a play and ended up doing a retouch on the first person because he sweat all over the place. I then learned that if you use a setting powder after you paint that fixes it, so as Shannon said, they all work. The trick is to use setting powder.
Re: brand of face paint for under stage lights
I've never used setting powder on face paint and I've done several musicals with singing and dancing monkeys... don't ask!
The face paint actually holds up really well. You will get the occasional "sweater" but if that is the case I use oil based make-up and set it with powder.

Is it ok to use setting powder on top of the water based face paint? In my research, I only see that its used for clown makeup...e.g. grease makeup.
Let me know your thoughts.

Re: brand of face paint for under stage lights
I was head of make up in my school's theatre dept for a long time, and our stage lights were soooo ungodly hot... even people who weren't sweaters sweated like crazy. So we raised the money to get grease paint, which is theatre make up. We got a combination of Mehron and Ben Nye and we set it with baby powder. Setting powder is best, as it doesn't wash out any color because it sets clear, but in a budget pinch, the baby powder works great.
If you choose grease paint and have never worked with it before, play around with it a bit first... it's very different from water-based face paints.

Make sure to go talc free if using powder. Some people will go asthmatic on you if you & some will have their eyes swell shut. I'm one of those who's eyes will swell up.
Re: brand of face paint for under stage lights
Yes, definately on the talc free, but not jsut for the asthmatic reason. The talc and also cornstarch in some baby powders can throw off the color of the make up... I know cornstarch can cast a yellowish hue over any lighter colored makeup and it won't set as well at all.

Re: brand of face paint for under stage lights
I have just always used my regular paints. I don't usually have to set anything, but, maybe the lights are not as hot in the theaters that I have worked at?
Re: brand of face paint for under stage lights
I'm painting 8 kids for the Tempest & will have loads of experience on stage make-up(8 shows)!!! I'm going to use my regular paints.
BTW, as I always say, don't use any glitter. It just makes the actors look wet & drippy with the reflective lights. I'm not sure about metallics, but plan to do a 1/2 metallic, 1/2 not test run under lights to see what happens.
