Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
Hello from sunny California and the CHA show! I just spent some time at the Tulip booth and they have come out with their own line of face paints, glitter tattoo products and even more exciting, an aerosol body paint spray. They said it's just like airbrush body paint and I am pretty excited.
The products will hit Michaels by the end of April, and after that Joanns and AC Moore. They are definitely marketing them to the average craft buyer (good/bad thing??). I tried the paint a little, and it seems a little weak, but without properly playing it's hard to tell. The glitter tattoos seem to be a good quality, and they will be selling them in kits of 25 stencils. Thy also have "party pack" kits for both taqqhe paint and the glitter tats. The spray tattoo product comes with 1 1.8oz spray bottle and 4 re-usable stencils. The stencils are basicly a glitter tat stencil with an extra clear piece of plastic all around it to help shield you from overspray. They say it will last up to 7 days, so I'll let you know how mine holds up. I think it only comes in black and blue. Ill post pics when I get home or have Internet access. (I'm on my phone). I just wanted to share the news!

Oh no....that is not good. When companies mass produce supplies like this and sell them in "box" stores at cheap prices. The average customer does not care about quality. They care about instead of hiring someone to do glitter tattoos for their child's party for $75 and hour. They can buy a kit form $25 and have leftovers.
Not good!!

That is my opinion too, Glitterfly. We spend alot on our supplies to get top quality products for our customer's safety and satisfaction. These kind of products can really undercut our businesses.

Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
I was thinking the same thing with the paints, but Snaz is sol in craft stores too, so it's not much different than that. The glitter Tats aren't as accessible to people now, so that should be interesting. But at the same time, the spray paint is pretty cool and a totally new product for us, so I give them credit for bein innovative.
Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
The fact that Snaz is now sold in full sized single pots in craft stores is exactly why I removed it from my working kit. The last thing I need is for a parent to recognize my paints and decide to start up their own business. I suppose it's the nature of the beast that companies would want to get a piece of the face/body painting pie. They did it with scrapbooking (and over saturated the market...and a lot of companies lost money when scrapbookers stopped playing their silly games) and now it's face painting. I've been toying with the idea of just painting for the pure joy of it anyway...

Hey LJ... If you decide to go all recluse on us, would you mind sending your custers my way? I'm still in it for the money. . (and because I love it, obviously)

LMBO!
Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
Awe! That just stinks! Well, I don't feel so intimidated by the face paints as it still takes loads of talent to do what we do, but the glitter tattoos are a nice mark-up for my business & gives my daughters most their spending money. Now, if every tween has a glitter tattoo kit, why would a parent want to pay for us to do it. Grrr...

Totally not so thrilled about it!!

Dear dear dear me.....
Here's hoping the regular mum client is too lazy to go looking for the do it yourself cheapy.
These companies must know they are attempting to put people out of business and don't care. I can only imagine where we'll be in ten years, between stores stocking paints, stencils and gilttr tats, and youtube videos......!

Also I used to work for JoAnn fabric for about three years so I am well versed in their crafts Anyhow I can tell you now the aerosol body painting spray is probably going to be a fail. They tried to market an aerosol fabric paint spray and it was atrocious. I tried it several times with several different variations and it always came out in a clumped messy mess. I never recommended it when people asked about it.

Just because your given a wrench, doesn't mean you can fix a car

I'm soooo not worried. There are already products on the market, at local craft stores, that offer the exact same thing, glitter tat kits. people don't even understand what they are? This will have a similar effect, that having another "painter" in the area may have. Two to three years from now, when glitter tats are more popular and understood, it could become an issue, but not yet.

Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
well everyone can bake a cake and there's still plenty of bakeries
Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
None of the craft stores or regular stores down here sell the type of face paints that we use. Even our costume stores don't sell it(though one did offer to order it for me at an atrocious price). Hopefully this stuff won't make it down here either.
On a funny note about selling face paints in a regular store, I was in target today and these ladies were looking for face paints for an event that they are having. I made a big show of talking to my mother about my face painting business and even mentioned my facebook page a couple of times. They didn't find what they were looking for, so hopefully they will check out my FB page.

Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
I agree with Magic and Criss. It's no biggie. Glitter tattoos are readily available online for anyone to buy already. Many people don't want to hassle with having to entertain their own kids. Face painting is an art form and just because it is sold in craft stores doesn't mean everyone is going to be a professional face painter.
Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
There will be some moms to do this but hopefully the moms that are looking for unique and special artwork will not. It is more than just putting the paint on your face, it is the artistic experience of being transformed into some fabulous character.
Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
Tulip is the name of a big Danish slaughter house/ meat producer. *lol* about the last company for me to connect to with facepaint.
But speaking more serious, I am happy that craft stores here only sells products for facepainting from Grimas and Snazaroo, not some acrylic stuff. It is different with the toy stores. Their stuff is often really bad!

I actually remove the TAG and dfx labels from my paints because I dont want anyone seeing the brands and think "Oh I can do that!" After all the hours I've put in??? hahaha

Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
I don't mind people knowing what I am using, since I am selling it. They buy some and have fun painting their own children, but realise it takes a lot of practice to reach a good level.
Else you can hint how much it cost to get all the colours, a lot of sponges, the best brushes, table, chair, glitter, maybe costume. It will scare the people who think it is an easy way to make money.

Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
I not only tell people what I use but link to the company on my website... I want them to be aware of what I am using, what is in it and why it is different from any other paint. They can go buy the exact same stuff as I use, it still won't look like what I do... it's taken me 2.5 years to get to this point, doing it often... they won't do it in a day.
Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
I can either go out and by a hamburger from Mickey D's or go to the grocery store and buy everything to make it! What would you do?
Most people will pay more for the easy route than have to do it themselves. Do't let it bother you too much!

Re: Brand new paint brand by Tulip revealed at CHA!
Went to Michaels yesterday and they had a really large selection of the tulip paint. I was in a hurry so didn't get to look at everything but there were party kits with a bunch of stuff, they had individual cakes, stencils, glitter all kinda stuff. Was so bummed to see it. The kits say they come with instructions on how to do some very decent faces! We don't have many painters down here, so most people don't see the value of it. Lovely having products around for the average joe to really drive that idea home. Bummer!
Hey Kat!

yeah, but if you take a close look at it, the stuff is greasy, like lip gloss.
