Free hand glitter tattoos?
Has anyone tried free hand glitter "tattoo" application? I tried tonight and it was so much fun! Not sure if this is practical for festival work, but since I'm now offering eye bling glamour parties (for proms, etc) I could offer this as well. I could see this application for brides, too- with white glitter. What do ya'll think?
My daughter liked it so much that we think we're going to do our hands before every party! So many people aren't sure about the glitter tattoos so if they see us wearing them we won't have to explain as much LOL Plus they're soooo sparkly and gorgeous and glittery that I'm sure the little ones will love it.

I have been doing freehand glitter tats for quite a while....let me see if I can find some pics
These are the first two I ever did freehand....
These are henna inspired...
And this one was just for fun....

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Gorgeous!! Do you get much demand for them or is it something you suggest to them? I'm thinking I should just make up some on mine and my daughter's hands and take pictures to show, but the camera just doesn't capture the beauty of them very well...
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
To be honest, I have been pushing glitter tats for parties around here, and they just haven't taken off.... I have done one glitter tattoo party that was freehand only glitter tats.....and that was YEARS ago.
All other parties have been face painting.
We offer glitter tats alongside face painting at festivals, and they are a good seller there, but they are all stencil as my daughter is the glitter tat gal and I am always busy painting or doing henna.
The majority of freehand glitter tats I have done have been in conjunction with henna events or programs.

Wow Lisa,
Those are absolutely beautiful! A couple of them almost look like they were done with liquid bling they are so perfect! My problem doing freehand glitter tats is the glue starts to dry and I lose the image of what I have already painted as it's harder for me to see when it's dry.
BTW..........
I need to pick your brain about doing festival henna!

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Linda tint the glue with food coloring. I haven't tried the free handing yet - they look great! What kind of brush do you use and are you cleaning the brush in alcohol as yu work?
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Just an FYI, I don't know much about freehand tats as I use stencils so far, but at FABBULAS, I did have a very large glitter tat across my chest and up like a necklace. The fabulous gals doing it used tinted glue. When the glitter tat came off a few days later, I was stained with the food colour. They really didn't have much in the glue, just barely a tint, but my skin soaked it up and kept it. I'm not complaining, I loved the design they gave me, but just be careful HOW much colour you put in your glue. Maybe this just happened to me and no one else I don't know.

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Lisa, how do you do the very fine henna like details? I get thicker bolder lines when I tried to freehand, when i try small details, I either don;t get enough glue, or it's too much and globs...?? Maybe I just have stumpy hands that need to practice a finer touch with the brush?? LOL

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
yeah it does leave a bit of a stain I don't know how else to handle it. It needs to have some color so you can see it -i wonder if I can use a drop of paint? Any ideas/ I can't see them in dim light with out the tint.
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
What about a drop of liquid face paint in the glue instead of food coloring?
I have an old eyeliner brush that I use for fine lines so it doesn't get all glompy.

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Do not put liquid Snaz in your adhesive....it will make it mold. I don't know about other brands.
I use two methods for my freehand glitter tats....for the henna style ones with thin lines and details, I use a henna applicator.
For bolder designs, like the "lisa" one or big swirly designs or flowers, etc...face painting inspired designs, I use a 4 brush, two rinse bath system and an assembly line method.

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
I actually don't use Snaz anything, I was thinking Mehron, which I've mixed with other stuff and not had mold.
That's so weird.

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
I was thinking about this on the way hom to use a henna applicator.Does it clog? How much work time do you have before it clogs if it does.
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Yup...I found out the hard way. I bought a bottle of Snaz liquid white, and Snaz liquid black around the same time I started doing glitter tats. Well =, someone recommended using it in the adhesive to make it a little more visible. So I added two drops of liquid white from a previously unopened bottle of bothe adhesive and Snaz..... long story short....had to throw out all of my adhesive because it got NASTY with mold growth.
I never used the liquid Snaz either....I was kind of afraid of it after that, thought it might be contaminated. I think it is still in a drawer somewhere...never even opened the black.

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
I keep a pin in the tip between uses, so clogging isn't a real issue. You need to clean it well afterwards though.
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Lovely!
I only do freehand glitter tatts, I can't stand stencils, all that waste...
I tint my glue (I use Graftobian pro adhesive) with snaz or whatever is handy. I haven't had a problem with it going mouldy and have gone through 2 of the big fl oz bottles since I started doing that. i wouldn't recommend food colouring - I used that when I taught field studies for various experiments we had to do weekly and it does NOT wash off!
I tend to do freehand gltter tatts at balls
Where some request are randoms - this 1 wanted 'cat-eaten blackbird wings'
I have found brushes get too sticky and clogged so try to keep my glue in little sort of puffer bottles
You don't really need to squeeze - it comes out a little too fast almost and takes a little practice, but does fine lines beautifully.
I moved on to develop what I call 'full body' freehand glitter tatts - these dancers are all wearing prosthetic breast covers, btw, its safe!
I experimented and found adding more paint, up to a point, is good for these - the glitter tatt lasts all day for performances w/o smudging but then can be rubbed & peeled off that night/ the next day, far more easily and w/o needing rubbing alcohol.
Of course for the tatt on leotards and 'normal' smaller ones I kept it low on paint so it lasted!
Even macho kungfu guys like it
And this is my fave so far...
I even did the club logos on her in glitter! It really has to be seen live to be apreciated. Totally addictive - try it!

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
Cat- you sold me on it and I'm going to try on the 27th! But seeing is I've never done a regular glitter tat, I'm a wee bit scared. My adhesive should arrive on Monday, so I have a bit of time to practice on myself before my guinea p- I mean Model.
Any other tips I should know? And how long should this take me?

Hi Cat!
Thank you so much for sharing all of this information on these two threads!
When you have time, would you be able to talk about how you got your foot in the door with these clubs and perhaps a general idea of how they paid you?
Thank you!!

Cat,
These are amazingly beautiful, and I know that your work would look even better in person as the photos can't capture how beautiful these really are!!!
wow, I'm just stunned.....thanks for posting these!

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
I don't know if this helps anyone but I trace out what I am going to do first on tracing paper with a 'tattoo marker' (Lisa sells them and they are on sale) http://www.wemakefaces.com/page38.html then i rub an alcohol wipe on the skin and press the design on... I then put glue down where I would like and then glitter...

Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
anyone try drawing the design on with a tattoo pen or make up pencil first? does it affect the adhesiveness or show too much?
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
I used a white eye pencil on mine before I did it... and it's 5 days later and not a bit of it has come off yet. So no, I don't think the pencil affects the adhesiveness LOL!
Re: Free hand glitter tattoos?
These are amazing. Every time I try doing glitter tattoos my glitter colors will mix a little and I dont know how to keep that from happening. Anyone know what I am doing wrong.
