Hand/Finger Skin Care for painters

Hi, I'm a rookie painter, 12 months old

The skin on my fingers and hands is taking a battering though, I have sensitive skin I suppose and I have a few skin cracks and sore patches that I cover up while painting but I'm finding it hard to get them to heal for good what with washing brushes,, sponges etc etc

Does anybody have any advice on regular skincare for hands for painter ?

My hands are always dry, cracky, and bleedy from washing them so often from my full-time job... so I rarely ever get ahead, lol... but I know some people will put lotion on their hands and then gloves on top while they sleep (so obviously a lot of lotion). I've never tried this though so I can't speak to it, but it does sound like it would help.

I keep a little bottle of lotion (organic stuff, so it actually benefits my skin) in my kit, so I remember to use it. I put it on before painting. I have some on my sink as well, same reason--for after dishes, sponges & brushes. And I have some in the cubby of my car door for stoplights.

I like to use organic coconut oil as a lotion. It also helps lift leftover paint. I use it on my face after I wash off paint too. It helps me at least, and I get really dry skin.

If I have severe cracking I use aquaphor and you can cover them with gloves (if on your feet then socks). If you are having it terribly bad, try wearing gloves for a bit and interchanging them to prevent washing as much while your skin heals. I also love aveeno lotion because it feels like it soaks it in rather than an oily barrier, but the aquaphor is when it's really bad and helps to protect them while they heal.

I have notoriously dry skin, as does my boyfriend (currently doing an internship at a restaurant and starting at culinary school.) His are significantly worse than mine due to washing his hands all day long.

I use Glysomed hand cream, he uses O'Keeffe's Working Hands. Both work very well, the O'Keeffe's is heavier duty.

Both of these products leave a residue on your hands that eventually gets absorbed, they are best applied at the end of the day so that you don't need to touch anything.
