Newbie challenge 2014 #1
So when I was on here before-- we did a newbie challenge every week--I think we did them for about 26 weeks before I kind of ran out of time (moving and everything).
It isn't for a prize or anything, but more like a challenge to get us newbies trying new things, post pictures, and get suggestions on them (if you want).
I started it the first time because I wasn't good enough to join the big quarterly challenges with out majorly embarrassing myself!! I didn't feel comfortable posting my work along side the 'long time professionals'.
so these challenges are GEARED to ONLY us newbies---
Newbie is a personal term.
I have been face-painting for about 2 years, but it has been so random that I still consider my skill to be NEWBIE--while my friend who started at the same time I did was at what I would consider semi-pro after half a year because she practiced so much--awesome! (Kammy I am talking about you!) SO I am more talking about skill level more than time length.... does that make sense?
Since I am starting these challenges over I will do a lot of repeats of when we did these challenges before!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO CHALLENGE #1--(I am going to go with maybe the most requested girl design I have)-- the BUTTERFLY
Try a butterfly and post the picture! Let us know if you want us to give some helpful hints (or not) on how you could improve!

I love it and this is a perfect challenge for me! I have 2 boys and don't get to practice girl designs. I am really in need of a butterfly I am comfortable with, so I will work on it any post for feed back. Thanks for this!!!!

Here's a butterfly I did yesterday, a little bigger than I normally do. Still lots of experiments when I paint, and this one is with the color on the inside using the rounded part of a butterfly sponge with white on the outside (I usually have used the pointy part of the sponge with white on the inside). I like the results, thanks for starting this newbie thread

Thanks for posting the first picture Thouartbeautiful!
I really like the upper wings!!
Are you up for any suggestions?
Morningglory--can't wait to see your butterfly!

Ok, my boys wouldn't do it so I had to paint myself. I don't have a good white liner, I am all snaz for now.
I don't like the wings but I don't know why. All constructive criticism is welcome!!! I need to be able to do this staple face, so pick it apart so I can put the pieces together better next time.

Oh the colors are beautiful (: I guess I would suggest more distinction between the top and bottom wing- leave yourself some breathing room right where they meet the eye.

OK, so here's one that I came up with while entertaining my daughter and niece during a World Cup match! I didn't want to add the "antennae" curly, and I'm not thrilled with it in this design, but she insisted.

Outinapout I think it's cute and gives me some ideas to fix my butterfly. If you don't like the antenna maybe you could extend the blue or white teardrops and make them the antenna.
Poopitypants it is a onestroke I made with snaz yellow, pink, and a purple I made by mixing snaz blue, red, and white. I'll try separating the wings and see if I can get the right look. Thanks!

Re: Newbie challenge 2014 #1
Ok second try at the butterfly. I only did one side because it is the easer side for me to paint. Once I have a good design I will practice matching the other side.
All feed back welcome!!!

morningglory - love the colors & shading on the pink gold white butterfly, I can imagine that in pearl colors! beautiful colors & line work on the red black one, how about those same lines in white on the pink one?

outinapout - love the butterfly side of the eye, maybe use the same aqua in the colors for antenna or focal point?

Thanks soo much, I am waiting on some white I can use for line work, so I will try that when I get it in.
I was worried I had gone a bit to far on the lines in the second butterfly. I just don't want it to look like it's too much.

Re: Newbie challenge 2014 #1
man I messed up SO MUCH doing this design on my face! I erased so much then started over and what not. BUT!! I'm finally pretty happy with how it turned out I don't know how I feel about the star bursts though. Should I not include them next time? Oh, and sorry for my poorly done star bursts. So hard painting on oneself!
Please, experts, critique my butterfly if I can make any changes to make it look better! Thank you!
