Creating an Ice Look

Hello all, I need to create an ice type look on someone for a play. I looked up ice fx and was going to order some, the kit was $50 the shipping $21. That is way more then I want to go. Any suggestions on creating the ice crystal look without breaking the bank?

I know how to paint them icy but want to add some kind of wow with "real" ice. The make-up will be on a 17 yr old boy.

Ohh.. i saw something the other day that you can make "glass" from sugar or something.. If you do it a little tiny bit wrong it looks frosty.. that could be a good thing

I was going to suggest sugar for frost, it can look absolutely fantastic.

I have used large sugar crystals (available at a specialty cake decorating store). I used clear eyelash glue and I pour/pat/press the sugar on.

I created an "Ice Fairy Princess" for myself in November 2011 for a Princess Party. I glued the sugar crystals on my right eyebrow, like a tiny snow bank. (I got the idea from our very own michellesfantasyfaces from the Netherlands). When I got home after the party, I jumped into the shower. I patted my Cetaphil face soap all over my face. A few minutes later while rinsing my face, I felt the ridge of glue and I quickly rolled it off. I had "waxed" my right eyebrow off when I rolled off the eyelash glue. It has grown back, mostly. I drew my eyebrows on for about 6 months.

I do not know why I share the scenes of self-inflicted humiliation with this Forum. Perhaps I am doing this as a public service to warn others. While I do find the above funny.... now, sort of, it was painful and not funny at the time.

I was thinking about gelatin as in when its starting to dry pull some out and get a drip say on a skewer. when thats dry reheat gelatine wait for the same sort of point of cooling and do it half way on exsisting drip wait to dry repeat etc. to get a staggered effect
powder it etc flip it over and upside down drip could with a paint job look like ice melting mabye. I got the idea while moulding gelatin horns the other day and watching my daughter messing with the paddle pop stick she was getting some long stingy tear drop like things which I was thinking if you flipped around may look like ice dangling not sure if it would work though just an Idea from watching her and though you may have some on hand.

I was wondering about the Bam stencil that is patterned like ice crystals? Never tried it...and it doesn't sould like that is exactly what you're going for...just brainstorming...

Glue this to a face piece (so the paint wouldn't touch his skin directly?) and then attach the piece with spirit gum or something?--

I did an ice queen once. I used a shimmery powder on the skin followed by a layer of sugar. ( dip brush into a mixing medium then into sugar) Followed by large prices of sugar crystals. It looked really cool.

Rock candy would work, too! You could use different colors to create a cool effect, too

I ended up just painting him then adding glitter. He had great eyebrows so I painted them up and made them stand out. Painted his hair. From the stage ( 1st time doing make up for a play) The details were lost anyway. I simplified the next night and no one even noticed.  It turned out nice and everyone was happy. What was at first supposed to be me painting 2 characters turned into me paining 22. So it was fast pace and a blurr but we had fun.
