Do you think this would work on the smoothie sponges to? I don't want to ruin them but they are quite stained as well...

Just thought of something....(you may have already addressed this, Denise, but sometimes I skip quickly through posts);

Couldn't some kids/people be sensitive to the dye? Question

Hmmm, that is a good question Miss Ronnie ( I love your name BTW, I am originally from Nashville and we put Miss or Mrs before everyones first name ) Very Happy I would think that as long as they are washed well then it wouldn't be much different than any other article of clothing/etc. that is dyed?

The paints are full of dyes, but I'm not sure if it would be similar. I know there are different dyes for different projects. I use to dye and paint with dyes on organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp fabrics. Oh, and I never had a person(mostly babies and children) ever react to those dyed fabrics Wink

I'm just going to keep washing my sponges. They don't stain if you put them in water right away after using them. And, I can tell if they are, in fact, clean, when I do wash them.

You guys have fun...

The forum shop does not sell them, it's not competing.

Doesn't currently sell them. Threads do get resurrected often. Just my opinion on the etiquette. No harm meant on either side I'm sure. I've just been around long enough to remember the shop before Metina started carrying a lot of things.

Dear Miss Ronnie, where can I score some of that soap that you use to clean your sponges? Please and Thank You! Very Happy I saw mention of it in an old thread....

The sponges are dyed in the first place to get blue and pink and whatnot. There must be similarities

I took the plunge...and even my 16 year old son thought they looked "super cool". Oddly enough, it seemed to soften the texture of my tack sponges to more of the texture of the fantasy sponges. Isn't that weird? I am not unhappy about it, as I was considering adding some. (I used liquid Rit dye & white vinegar if you want the same effect).

I have my white vinegar and Rit dye on hand but I am waiting for my fantasy sponge order to come in the mail, might as well hit them all. Hope I have the same success...

"Took the plunge"...made me smile. Smile

I didn't notice a texture change but there's lots of different sponges. My few I've used have held up well. No noticeable loss of color yet but I haven't had very many gigs but I have 4 lined up and I might volunteer at Festival of the Trees today so we 'll see!

I think the stovetop method works best. Someone else said on facebook that the machine washing didn't work very well.

I read that the washing machine method isn't as effective as the stovetop mamakatrien.....sounds like you might want to send your little spongies swimming again! Very Happy

I did about 30 in a big pot. It said like 3 lbs of clothes...but sponges are light so that didn't really correlate. Let me see if I can find the picture...looks like 42 including the daubers.

Dyeing Sponges Black - Page 2 Empty Re: Dyeing Sponges Black

Post by Lady Jayde Thu Nov 29, 2012 10:28 am

Denise, you should get an award or at least a box of cookies for sharing this idea. I'm going to dye my sponges tonight...not because I have an issue with staining thought. Shannon was my mentor when I decided to go the professional route and her "keep the sponge" wet practice does work...other painters have assumed that I don't use my sponges because most of them look brand new...it really does work.

No, I'm going to dye my sponges because nobody will make them in a color that doesn't clash with my setup and everytime I discover a sponge that I really like it seems to add yet another color to my setup. I have sponges in 2 different greens and some rose pinks ones (all Aussie sponges that's me!) and the uniformity of all black sponges will make me giddy to the point of rediculousness...plus it will add to the "mystery" of face painting.

You are a gem Denise!

Stainless steel can be cleaned with 'Bar Keepers Friend'...it comes in a Comet-like can and can be found in WalMart and larger grocery stores.

It is a miracle cleaner... I have sworn by it for years and years.

NOTHING works like this stuff does to get even the worst burned pans clean.
