Dear mssparkleface:
I dye my sponges black.
I use Rit dye.
I find the Kryvaline never stain sponges very stiff.
Where are you from mssparkleface?

Hi Lisa.....thank you for your input.....I was able to find a US distributor so ordered a few of the black ones to test......Never thought about using Ritz to dye the sponges so I'll have to check out the pros and cons of doing that.  Don't want to try it right now as I was looking for sponges that I can use on a cruise that won't show the staining.....right now I use the green sponges from Fantasy.
Do you have a formula for dying your sponges.....I think I would like to have very dark coloring.  Do you have to re-dye them because of fading?
I'm located in Oregon.

Denise Cold of The Painted Party has a YouTube video on dying the sponges black.
Yes, they do fade.
I have to redye them every year or so.

Happy Painting!

A few of us on the forum go the extra mile and dye our sponges black to make everything look cleaner. There is no harm in it, and as long as you use a high quality fabric dye they will stay black for a long time. I buy Fantasy World Wide Sponges and dye them black because they are the best quality IMO.

It's all pro's really, can't think of any cons.

I use RIT liquid fabric dye and use hot to boiling water on the stove in a pot. Don't skimp on how much you put in! Also when done, blast them with cold water. Then rinse and let dry.
Note: Get a pot from the 2nd hand store for this. Do NOT use one of your cooking pots.

I haven't had to redye my sponges yet, but I figure after a year or so I'll have to.

Totally worth it!

I'm going to give this a try for sure......but was wondering if any of you have dyed sponges that already had stains?  Maybe I can salvage some of my still good but very stained green sponges......
again thank you for the input......

Yup! Near all my sponges were stained when I dyed them. Worked fine couldn't even tell. I had FWW ones, silly farm ones, craft store ones and snaz ones. All of them dyed without issue.

I dye my FWW sponges with rit dye as well, and have has lots of success! I also dyed the foam surrounding my paints in my case, as it was too grey for me!

I always let them soak for MUCH longer than it says on the package, and use much more dye:water than the package recommends. My first batch came out slightly purple/blue due to a lower quantity of dye and shorter dying time. I know it's exciting, but let em soak!

Yes, as melly said, my first batch came out too light following the directions, I would also recommend rinsing and drying brand new sponges before dying them, it helps the dye take.

The last two boxes of Rit I bought from Walmart were BAD. Someone recommended Dahrma Trading so I bought IDyePoly and it worked really well and has maintained its color well HOWEVER you have to wash the excess out really well...not just a cycle through the wash...hand wash. One poor painter thought hers were ruined because it kept transferring so she called the company and they gave her the usual "we don't recommend" speech so she threw them away. I'm really determined and like black sponges so I kept washing and eventually it stopped losing color and it's held even better than the original Rit.

I always use liquid rit. It's bit more expensive, but a higher quality IMO.

Odd to hear about the RIT doing that to your sponges, it's a very good brand. Perhaps it was a bat batch? Very odd indeed, but glad you found something else.

Denise when you used Rit was it the liquid? And those of you that have had success with Rit dye, are you using liquid or powder?
