Sales Tax on FP services
Hey there! I had a hard time finding this information out, and so I thought it would be nice to have a topic on here with this kind of information. Time can change things so it is always best to call and double check with your states department of revenue. But in Iowa you DO have to pay sales tax quarterly on face painting/glitter tattoo service. I know some states do not charge it on a service, but I emailed them and they said yes it is taxable. Feel free to let others know on this post what your state/countries laws are on this subject. Please do not post because you "heard it from someone else" Please only post if you have contacted your government.

Kansas does not have sales tax on facepainting. Talked to the KDOR Oct. 2011.
Missouri does not have sales tax on facepainting. Talked to the MDOR yesterday, May 24th 2012.

Re: Sales Tax on FP services
Hi, I live in NY, and they ask the sales tax and a non-food vendor permission only for street fairs than are affiliated to a promoters company, some of them you don't need it that's why for me is hard to find a festival and fair than you don't need to pay a membership, otherwise is too expensive.
Re: Sales Tax on FP services
In Mississippi you do not have to pay sales tax at festivals, etc. on facepainting. I did have to request a "letter ruling" from the MS State Tax Commission and they mailed me a letter head statement to that effect. I made MULTIPLE copies of it, keep it in my fat max, and submit one along with the tax envelope (marked 0) at any festival I am at. They usually don't argue with me after I show them the letter. It's made life so much easier.

oh, the letter ruling is good for 7 years after date of issuance. After that, you must make another request.

Re: Sales Tax on FP services
I live in New Jersey and i had to contact a special department as Face Painting was not listed to collect sale tax.
Today i received an answer and in New Jersey Face Painting is a non taxable service as the service provided is personal in nature. Personal services such as barbering and beauty parlor care are exempt of imposition sales tax. However i need to complete Form C-6205-T "Request to be placed on a non reporting basis".
i wanted to add the link received but it seems i can't sorry.
YEAY!!!!
I found my mistake here is the link:

Re: Sales Tax on FP services
The info I got back from TX comptroller stated that face painting and glitter tattoos are non taxable and do not have to pay sales tax, but I do have to pay tax of the supplies I use to perform said services.
Also was told even though it is non taxable, I still needed a sales tax permit to display at events, which that makes no sense to me but I do it anyways.
This was emailed to me Oct. 2012 from the comptrollers office.

Re: Sales Tax on FP services
The state of Florida does not tax services. For a VERY short time they did- and it was unpopular.
Remember BTW that you don't CHARGE sales tax- you COLLECT it. The tax is on the idividual SPENDING the money, it is simply your responsibility to collect it and pass it along.
