Starblend Skull Empty Starblend Skull

Post by Denise Cold Sat Apr 28, 2012 2:24 am

Here's a skull using mostly Starblend and then some white highlights like on the teeth and black outlines and cracks. I wanted to make the eyes more menacing so they got a clownish treatment. I kind of liked that I could go over the white to shade. Any suggestions on the forehead and nose?

Oh, I love it!! Specially the eyes give it a really evil look!
Maybe I would make the white on the nose a bit bigger, do you know what mean? The 'bones' on the forehead are really cool, maybe place them more next to the black of the eyes?
But... I think it's already awsome as it is now!

I agree with everything l!zzie said. I also felt there was a little too much black on the nose. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your shading!!! Time to play with my starblends some more!

OH...This would be SO-O-O cool to use in the FL heat w/a big crowd! I have red, orange & white but wasn't using them until the heat hit & I had a big event w/a lot of little boys. Denise, is that black starblend around the eyes? If so...I need to order some!

Very cool Denise, I also liked your pirate on the other thread. So guess what I did yesterday? Ordered more starblends. Yep, that was me on the swap shop selling all of mine about 2 months ago. After seeing what people are doing with them, and loving my small palettes of BenNye, I realized I was to hasty and wanted my starblends back! LOL Oh well, you live and learn. tongue

Starblend Skull Empty Re: Starblend Skull

Post by faceandbodyfx Sat Apr 28, 2012 10:11 am

Denise I love the skull.

Now I have a question.

How do you get your starblend so opaque, mine always seems translucent.

Any tips? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Good job! I need to try a skull with Starblends. I don't have a skull on my board, but I know the boys would love it, if it was starblends Smile

I love all the starblend ideas you are sharing. I have just started using them, sadly just for spiderman. Thanks for the inspiration! By the way Denise I love your u tubes with your daughter. Makes me smile every time I watch them.

Starblend Skull Empty New Skull Design

Post by Denise Cold Sun Apr 29, 2012 3:13 am

Thanks guys... Smile

I did work on my design longer than I would in the field so the blacks got blacker than they normally would and I outlined it a bit when I had the black on my brush. Here's the one I did today at a PPF...I ended up doing two. I wish I had a picture of that one because I forgot the cracks on this little girl. I like the look of it so much more than my other skull I was doing. The Starblends are so much easier for me to get that blended look...especially since I've always used TAG that dries so quickly. There's something about doing the pointy eyes that I like. I'm sure by the end of the summer I'll be rocking it!

Starblend Skull Empty Loving Starblends

Post by Denise Cold Sun Apr 29, 2012 3:22 am

Speaking of that, CKC...my first event last year we did a skull on a young man in his twenties who had tattoos on his arms and I think even his neck. Emma sponged him in and I could hear him making a lot of noise. I got to him to finish up the details and he was flinching like crazy and said "this is worse than getting a tattoo!" I couldn't believe it!

These powders do have their drawbacks like fly away powder and they are sheer but I did at least a dozen spiderman/skull/tigers on boys and only one flincher in the whole bunch. I love not having to worry about getting paint in the their eyes. I only had one boy who I had to take a Kabuki to get off excess powder because it was bugging him. I just have to remember to tap off and it helps a lot. I didn't even put a dent in my powders either...

Can you tell I'm a new fan? LOL!

I think that's why I shyed away from doing skulls because I used TAG white and it dried too fast. I'm going to try out a skull this week, if my kids will let me! LOL

LOVE IT!!! Denise... you seriously get the award for most improved in the shortest amount of time. I really applaud how you have jumped into this and really taken the time to learn and improve. You are SO much further along than I was after just a year. I didn't find FPF till I had been at this for about 5 years! When you first joined the forum I checked out your website, and the difference now is astonishing!! Good on you! Starblends are my go-to for skulls as well. =)

My quick 3-min skull for lines. (Silly Heather B). I do the bottom sides differently now.

My advanced skull. 10-15 min. (idea inspired by a snazaroo competition pic)

Starblend Skull Scaryskeletonmescaled

Black and white starblend can actually go on VERY opaque. Just layer a little. The black on the eyes could be nearly as dark as paint if I wanted it to be. The fiber in the blendies is the key. Nothing works as well. (in my opinion). I actually kinda like the eyes of the skull to be "smoky". Gives a blended look and looks less harsh on little kids.

Love it! I actually used my starblends quite a bit at the festival this weekend. The weather was very humid so I ended up trying the starblends and they worked like a charm Smile Now I HAVE to try that skull at my next festival!

Katrina, that's scary...I'm casually scrolling down and then BAM! LOL! Nice skull!

Thanks for the compliment...I really have tried. I'm really happy with my newer designs so thinking I'll do that before my Summerfest gig and have a great menu this summer.

Yeah, Paint always photographs with a shine, so the contrast photographs a little strange against the matte powders. You can see that a bit in my second pic too. lol.

Love the bones! What a great add on for a party or upsell! So the flames are peeking through the skull? That's cool.
