Hey guys,

A few people have suggested that I contact bunnings re face painting for them. Does anyone work/ hired to painted for them? Can you give me the info re contract, rate of pay etc. Head office told me that they employ people as team member then give them a basic fping course. So I am guessing pay them $20 per hr like the other staff. If anyone has any info, please share with me. Thanks Kylie

Have worked for bunnings as a face painter, don't anymore. They found me as I have painted my children up and gone there.
Bewear though It is there policy to basically pick there most artistic staff member, sit them behind you and attempt to learn so that they don't need you.
It is up to each store manager as to what they do. But have worked for two different stores and so has someone else on the forum (Tammie) and trying to learn your secrets so they don't need you seems to be a policy of theres it is just how pleasently go about it that seems to vary.
They do not value face painting.
How I orriginally got the job was when first starting out, I would paint up the kids and go out somtimes that was too bunnings.
when they had a family night I turned up for the show my husband was running late/overtime at work so I painted the children which I hadn't intended but they were upset that they would miss out on stuff.
I went there and the store manager had been looking for me (for a few months as she had seen the children) as people had acctually notice the children in store. so that how I accidentally got bunnings. But Then ....comes the fact that they do try to learn and steal your stuff. They very much don't value facepainting and feel we are over priced, and as I was starting out I charged them less that I do now.

what it comes down too is there family nights and there budget you will see that they basically say have for exam ple a animal show. a jumping castle sausage sizzle and some craft activity.
now they feel that the staff members can cover the face painting.. and they pay them there normal rate.
Now the problem arrises when a real facepainter rocks up. with children painted and people start requesting what they have. and parents start asking questions to the face painter and children are no longer interested in what bunnings have to offer.....then parants start asking about saftey and I politly say that it is not how I would do it - to those who havn't seen it it is dismal. and I got bookings from parants as I was there .

So it didn't look good for bunnings I sopose.
For the record I did acctually go for I think it was some farm show at the time
but you are correct that is what they do member of staff, blue card and some dervain as face painting is easy!!! why would you pay for it - didn't you know. but a jumping castle is worth hiring for $200???

i.e here is paint it gos on face only use this paint others bad, here is brush don't poke it in eye etc etc - LOL takes about 30mins its a video apparently staff member I was with told me. then they get some sort of bunnings certificate i.e. facepainting workshop etc

Its sad to hear... it really dose depend on the store manager, as to what the go/policy is. but there have been alot of facepainters stung by bunnings. one way or another in Sydney at least.
I have yet to hear of a great ongoing relationship with bunnings as yet.
I know that they used some of the same clowns, entertainers, and twisters over and over for years - just not facepainters.

OMG i cant believe bunnings tried to copy your work by having one of their staff watching over you, you shouldn't of be paid $20 hr because you were teaching them how to face paint that is totally wrong

It was in the beginning of my face painting, I was paid $60 an hour. there were two girls I worked with. One was told to sit behind me and basically learn. the other girl tipped me off and told me lots of stuff as it was easier with me there.
She wanted me to keep comming back. Bunnings eventually told me that they thought that $60 an hour was too much and wanted $40. My rate had gone up by then but I kept bunnings at $60 to be nice.

I told them that I have public liability, petrol, paints, brushes, Tax basically many business expenses so in fact what they were doing was asking me to work for below what they were in fact paying the girls- by the time you worked it all out.

add to this that they hire a balloon twister every second weekend at $70 (here discounted rate) an hour and I was insulted.
I was soposed to be there once a month when we agreed on $60 for 10 gigs. which ment as I got better and more established and my rate went up bunnings still got $60PH. needless to say I havn't been back as I am not working for the equivilent of $15an hour after expenses.

It is not left hostile I just am not going back for any less, it was a verbal agreement as I was beginning face painting .I was very nervous, new to it all, and mabye a little timid as you know how you kind of don't value yourself when you start face painting, like you should. all those sort of feelings etc.

The second bunnings was a one off (i know the security guard friend of the family) in the same area different store, under the same area manager. and strait of the bat they had a chair behind me with there usual/team member face painter in it - and although unconfirmed I got that same feeling - here we go again.

now for activitys i.e. mothers day night, fathers day night etc bunnings has a budget for entertainment. I was annoyed as they felt willing to pay $520 for an animal farm and still wanted to haggel me down on painting.
they pay $140 every second weekend to a twister -who may I add dose the same basic twists I do. I probebley have a couple she can't do and I consider myself a very basic twister.

And there are a few painters in Sydney who have been passed over by bunnings or have "A story"

Now I have made a point to network and be friends with the magicians, jumping castle, party hire, animal farm, childrens show people as well as face painters and many of them have great ongoing work with bunnings. but they all do things that is felt can't be duplicated by a staff member - where as face painting they seems to be an opinion that it can.
This is my oppinion based on not just face painting but other painters and a few entertainers I know. combined with an insight from a staff member, as well as people/businesses who have good relationships with bunnings.

Now to duplicate what I was doing is going to be very hard for a bunnings staff member (not this forum) and that is one of the reasons the girl told me, she was under alot of preasure. but to me it is a case of the mum who stands back and says thats easy shrugs and says you get paid what??? but this time it seems to be a manager.

now each area may be different but there seems to be a little bit of a conflict with facepainters and bunnings in Sydney area.
Remember each manager is different. prehaps this is all comming from and area/regional manger I don't know.
But If you get a store that likes and appeciates you stick with it. but be cautious especially if a chair is behind you.

I work at bunnings as my day job, at our store we hire someone from world for kids every weekend to do ace painting or balloons or have a jumping castle/ fairy floss. Some of the other team members have been given face paint training/ tattoo training. All stores are different there are three of us at my work who are face painters, they don't get us to don't get us to do it usually and hire someone externally.
