Problems with Tag? Empty Problems with Tag?

Post by Ember Mon Dec 19, 2011 5:54 am

So over the weekend I got painted up with Tag Turquoise paint (face, midriff, neck, 1 arm for the character you can see in my avatar). I was quite looking forward to it seeing as I'd only used Snazaroo in the past, and a professional bodypaint artist had recommended Tag to me as a higher quality and longer lasting paint.
I was very disappointed with it however!

For some reason my face had an almost plastic-like sheen to it. I only put a couple of light coats of paint on my face, and could not figure out why it had gone so shiny. I hadn't used moisturiser either. I do naturally have quite oily skin, but there is no way that the oil could have got to the surface as quick as it did. The shine seemed to just happen as the paint dried. I brushed on some pressed powder which did take away most of the shine (but slightly discoloured the paint, being flesh-colour). I understand that Tag is wax-based, and perhaps this could explain why it turned out so shiny? The rest of my body did not have this shiny appearance, it was just the face.
Over the next few hours the paint started to wear away around my mouth (was doing lots of smiling), under my eyes, and it flaked off on the inside of my elbow and in spots on my chest and back. With the volunteer work that I do, it's important that everything I wear looks right when in costume, and I became quite self-concious of how the paint was looking (had a photo taken by the Press with the Prime Minister).

I had a far better experience with Snazaroo, I was able to eat/ drink over a number of hours and have no cracking of paint on my face or anywhere else whatsoever, and just slight flaking where I'd put the paint on too thick with Snaz. It was also matte, and I never had any problems with shine (until a few hours in full paint had lapsed).

Was I doing something wrong with Tag? (Applied with only water). If anyone can steer me in the right direction that would be great!
Being told that Snaz was inferior to it made me think it would be better, but things seem to be the other way around!
I'm intending on selling the remaining unopened Tag cakes I have and going back to Snazaroo Neutral

I use almost all TAG paints and have never had the issue that you did...

When you say you put coats of paint on that sends off bells and whistles for me. I think putting multiple coats on is the problem.

I know this may sound silly but was it a tag peal paint?
and another thing I remember reading a thread when you started here about using mehron mixing liquid.
the reason I mention this is if you had left over liquid left on the cake from a while ago then you used water on this occasion that could mess with the effect.

The only TAG I've had trouble with is white and it's because it was thick line work so I'm with Metina with the mulptiple coats. Haven't experienced the "shine" either.

Paradise or Krylon are probably a better paint for what you are doing. It's glycerine based and will probably be more flexible and less likely to flake for body painting. When I tried to use TAG for body painting it was creating lap marks and did not layer. The pearls are great for that but you want the matte look.

TAG doesn't have turquiose...I'm wondering if it was Light Blue maybe?

Oh yes, it was the Tag light blue sorry! Definitely not pearl though.

Maybe 'coats' was the wrong word? Layers probably would have been better Razz

Elantaura, I think you may be right. The mehron probably left a residue in the cake, and this caused the problems.

Regardless of whether or not I can get Tag to work, the colour is too light for what I need (previous colour was too dark!). Alas, the search for the perfect blue continues Razz

I'll look into using Paradise and Krylon, thanks Denise Smile

I agree, the white has a shine to it if it's thick. It can flake or rub off with effort. It almost has a rubber feel to it. It's fine for face painting, but maybe not apply it so thick for body paint.

I have to say that your avatar rocks!!! Love it!!!

the mixing liquid will soak in once it is added and reak havok. once you have wet a cake with it it sort of always needs mixing liquid not water again.
a soloution is to cut out part of the cake (split it) and have half for the liquid, and half for water and label and keep seperate - I have a silver i mucked up a while back how I leaned. as for the right blue. you could try splitting a tiny bit of dark blue with it and mixing together- as you have them already.

now this is a personal opinion. Kyolan goes on great as a base but it is shocking for line work (I am new to it and may be doing somthing wrong?)but I do love the base be it rock sponge, normal spoge or Kabuki.

but after a rainstorm yesterday with an angry bird on my arm in kyolan it dosn't seem to hold up as well as the Tag to moisture. i.e. one drop instant mess vs a few for tag to get messed.
Paradise I don't know much about only have black. but Tash I have seen get awsome results from in person.

also when buying paint they are usually darker in the cake form. I belive in all brands ( someone correct me if I am wrong ) than they will be on skin. so you will be looking for a little darker than you want on skin in cake form.

I haven't used TAG but have used Wolfe which is from the same factory and a wax based make-up.

I once did my clown make-up using Wolfe white as the base - it was HORRIBLE to wear, turned waxy and shiny, took on an orange peel like texture (pores were showing sort of), showed signs of wear in the creases, actually crumbled around the nose and mouth...

I have worn Snaz, Kyrolan, Fantasy Worldwide, Grimas, Fardel... all performed way better than the Wolfe as a base colour.

I love tag for face painting gigs, but for long wear I'd go w/ Paradise or Kryolan. Prefereable Paradise as it dries & sets better/quicker.
I wouldn't use Wolfe/DFX or TAG for anything long wear.

The Interferenz Kryolan has a nice feel to it for body painting. It's creamier and has more staying power.

Any rainstorm will make water activating paints melt. The Interferenz holds up better then my other paints, but will still melt if it gets wet enough.

Wow, thanks for all the helpful information everyone! Very Happy

So I definitely won't be using Tag for further body painting (odd, because I was told it's what bodypaint artists in NZ use for competitions confused )
Maybe another reason why it went shiny is because being light coloured it has a fair amount of the white mixed in (which some of you have said can be shiny).

After a bit of looking around, I think Paradise 'Sky' may be a suitable alternative for the character I do (Aayla Secura). Tag 'light blue' was too greenish turquoise, and Snazaroo 'Sky Blue' was too dark.
Some Avatar Na'vi artists use the Paradise Sky, and it does seem to be a good colour match for Aayla going by photos of the product. For those who have used it, I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me if you think it's a good match for the photo of the actress as Aayla below, and how well you think it photographs
