Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
I have not been able to train up another face painter as yet and I am hoping to do this over the quieter months. So I thought it would not take much to have a glitter tattoist....My question is for those who have purchased them..which ones are the best and what kit do you recommend to start with.. I was thinking the $150 dollar one from silly farm with an additional sticker set, as I dont have a spare six hundred to go all out. I appreciate you advice everyone.

Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
oh... and my most popular glitter tattoos are the mushroom from mario... hello kitty with the hawaiin laii, a hibiscus flower and a rose that I designed. The monster energy logo is surprisingly popular too. Oh... and "I love Justin Beiber". lol.

Kat -
I'm slightly surprised. I swear, during the summer I do what feels like countless 'tramp stamps' out of butterflies and tribal designs.

Michael's has a Tulip Brand Glitter Kit, for body art. You could use an online coupon for 40% off. I haven't tried it, just thought about it. I would start there because with the coupon you could bring home everything for under $20. Then you could do a trial run with the artist in training without spending so much. It has sticker stencils, glue, a brush, and glitter.

Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Thank you SO much. I just love this place...I was thinking about what I would do with all the designs that would not be so popular. Another question for you..which glue is better and what is your preferred method of applying it,,the lip stick wand thingee ? I was thinking of gettin 10 each of the designs I like and see how we go..yay another venture..Whats the difference with the 2 layered stencil and the three layered,,obviously there is another layer but I dont understand what it's about..Thankyou guys so much you have saved me heaps of money and a whole heap of time.
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
I bought 2 of the lipgloss applicators and...I'm not a huge fan. I feel like I have to reload SO MUCH...I hear that there are empty nail polish bottles at Sally Beauty - I may try that out.
The 3rd layer is a clear vinyl that helps with putting the stencil on the skin, especially with floating pieces! If you have floating pieces and no 3rd layer...not good, haha. Makes it so much easier.
I just started GT's in October so haven't had a summer with them yet...can't wait, though! With so many layers of clothing, these things don't last very long. I had a snowflake on my ankle on Friday I think, and replaced it yesterday since it was looking bunk already...hard to advertise them as lasting 5-7 days if jackets and sleeves etc wear them down faster...

I love the starter kit from signature glitter. It is very reason price and you get to pick your designs, and the stencils are great.

Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
I just bought all the fixin's for mica tattoos, here's what I did:
- bought 20 different stencils (in a pack of 6, so 120 stencils total) from FakeToos.com ($54)
- got prosthetic adhesive from SillyFarm ($15 4oz bottle)
- bought 7 2oz bottles of mica (gold, bronze, black, purple, red, green, blue, approx. $9-$15 each)
So... I spent approximately $145, and if I use all my stencils I'll make $600, plus the amount of mica and glue I got should last me quite a while.
Now I just have to wait for some mica tattoo gigs to come around!

Hey Janna, where did you buy the mica from? I'm trying to get into that but I have no head for math and am looking for a good deal.

I got mine from www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com. I previously got some soap making supplies there, and noticed that they also carry cosmetic mica. The quality is quite nice!
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Tamariel... I live in a very conservative area. I have trampstamps and tribals but don't do them often.
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Wow. First I've heard of signature glitter. They are just slightly cheaper than chitchat. Awesome! The tattoos stencils are more expensive though. I would go with faketoos if you're going to buy stencils. $.05 cheaper if you're not buying 300 or more. They have a really nice clear transfer material they use at faketoos. Wish I could find the stuff for when I make my own!!
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Also... if you like FakeToos on Facebook, he posts all kinds of discounts - some are like 20% off. So that's really a great deal!
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Can I just say: don't forget investing time and a little cash in signage.
Because GTs are completely new in my area, I found that I hardly made ANY sales for the first few PPF events with just the words "glitter tattoos" on my banners. Having one on my wrist to demonstrate helped somewhat, BUT once I made a great banner - sales have increased dramatically. And as soon as one teenager gets one, back come all her friends for theirs.
Actually, i just placed my 3rd order for stencils yesterday. So I was up late making my banner, which I will order very soon from vistaprint (been printing on A4 paper up until now, then joining with sticky tape. Not ideal but better than nothing).
I now have upwards of 60 designs and have been conservative when making my choices, ordering what I believe will be the money makers, starting with minimal orders (6-10 of each design). Now, with experience, I am fairly confident of which designs are requested again and again.

Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
If you order from FAketoos, ask for a discount code, he gave me one on my first order, really great to work with, and if you ask, he will print you up a set for your displays too. I like the three layers. Kat and Mana have both made some great stencils for me to (thanks!) I use mostly hello kitty, sponge bob, unicorns, dolphins, peace signs, flowers, butterflies, transformers, cookiemonster, hibiscus (alot) the playboy bunny, lips. The breast cancer ribbon is a popular one too. I don't seem to sell many tramp stamps in glitter, and most of my glitter tats are the small ones. I am closing out the bigger ones because I just don't sell them.
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Thanks everyone! Now I know this will differ but what do you all charge? I was thinking $6 each
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
mine start at $6... then $7 and $9 for the bands or x-large designs
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
I don't think I charge enough, but I usually do $5 for the smaller ones. As they get larger or more complicated they go up to $7 and $10. I think I will raise my price for my next event.

Any chance you can post a photo of your banner? I have invested in a whole glitter tattoo setup, starting with the Tulip basic kit/stencils from Michaels and then just invested more from Jest Paint... and I have yet to sell one glitter tattoo.... no one around here seems to know what they are!!!!!
Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
Exactly, Miss Ronnie. Until they see them, they just don't understand how PRETTY they are. But they need to know you've got them, and that they are a lot different to airbrushed tattoos.
Okay, so I'm in the middle of overhauling my banner - as I said before, previously I had printed it out with my home inkjet then taped the A4 sheets together. Not exactly classy, but it worked. Sales started climbing. It had a photo of a glitter tattoo to demonstrate the finished product, and the designs were all black on a white background. But as I have just purchased a whole lot more, I had to update everything. Delete some, add others.... so I will post a copy of the new (but unfinished) banner for you. It needs some tweaking, but I think it is easy for customers to follow, pick and choose (I am considering leaving the prices blank, so I can write them in and change them if necessary without a reprint).
Each design will have a number and that corresponds to my filing system. (again, I will hand write these)
The second part of my plan is to use a stencil (or 2) on paper - do the glue and glitter thing - then laminate it and attach it in some way to the banner. Haven't got that far yet, but that's the plan.
Okay, I'll go figure out if I can upload it. (always a challenge for me)
Here it is... I would be interested to know your opinion re: having the lower priced stencils on the bottom. My reason for this is that smaller kids will be able to see them better. And adults/teenagers will have a better view of the armbands etc. The banner is displayed on a sandwich board, about 60cm off the ground.

Re: Whats the best way to start off glitter tattoo's?
I do not reuse stencils. I make all my own and a lot of mine have "floater" pieces and they are hard to reapply
Also When you pull the stencil off the 1st time it then has a lot of dead skin cells attached to the adhesive stencil. Then reusing that stencil with the skin.... yuck! Now if it is just for my kids to me or husband... no biggy, but someone elses stencil on me. no way.
plus making my own 3 layer stencils only costs me pennies.... so it isn't a big deal. Just time consuming "weeding" or "picking" the vinyl apart.
