I just learned this lesson. About 35-45 minutes BEFORE my stop time, I shut down the line. If I am by myself, I will indicate who is left in line with some sort of mark (number, star, etc) on their hand. If I see that the line is really long an hour before stop time, I stop the line then.
You may get a couple of people that curse you out or bad mouth you but you have to develop a thick skin and don't take it personal. I just smile and keep it going!
Have fun!

yep, as "by these hands" said, letting them know in advance that *that* person is the last in line, is really helpful - especially if you ask for their help in telling people that they're the last.

....And welcome Smile

I just paint a number on the hands of those waiting within my shut off time, then if someone gets in line with out a number, I tell them without the number they don't get painted today, but I always tell them where and when i'll be painting next time, and remind them to come early next time.

Great thanks eveyone for the advice. I really hate turning the kids away but your right, I have to get a thick skin and keep moving. I really like painting the number on the hand idea.
