So excited!!!!

I just landed my first corporate gig thanks to the sugar skull challenge we just had!!!

I love the challenges, just coz they're fun, coz they make me push myself a little more, coz I love to see everyone elses creativity, coz it helps me to build my site with pics..... and now coz it just helped me land a gig!!!

Mid next month I will be painting sugar skulls for 4 hours, at a liquor industry function at a bar here in Perth. The theme... Day of the Dead.

When searching for face painters in Perth and specifically sugar skulls, she came across my pics from the challenge, and to make a long story short, has just booked me in. We are sorting out a few details, but she said it's a definate!!

Ok, so this is a big deal for me. I've only done two kiddy parties up till now, super excited and quietly terrified! lol. Good thing is, I've got lots of time to prepare and have a Becstar workshop a few days beforehand, so hopefully will be raring to go!

She said they only want me to paint sugar skulls, so I won't have to worry about random out there requests! Pheww.

Well, I know one place I'll definatley be going to nut out some ideas. Gotta come up with fast, flashy designs. Had sugar skulls floating around in my dreams last night!! lol, a few months ago, in my ignorance, I hadn't even heard of sugar skulls!


Oh yeah, also booked a party for this Saturday from someone else who found me online. This will be my first party where I have no idea who they are! My other parties were for my niece and for a friend of my niece.

Congrats for your booking, you're a great artist (and better person -I love your sense of humor) and you deserve it!.
And I agree with you how wonderful are the challenges on the forum (so much talent altogether) and how much we're learning from you talented people over here. (Not only FBP: I've heard about steampunk, sugar skulls and mardi grass on this forum for the very first time!!! You're my own and loved Wikipedia!)

I adore sugar skulls I spend alot of time searching for unique pictures of sugar skull art work, I just put a half face and a full male and female sugar skull on my board for my halloween gig. Such a interesting art form sugar skulls and for that matter Day of the Dead stuff. I face painted at a National Funeral Museum last weekend and that had a very cool DOD display.
Congratulations, try and remember to take pictures, I always forget.

Oh wow Rae, that's great. I can imagine you're terrified, but there is no need, cause you're a fabulous painter. And I realize now that they apparently read this forum. so this post too.

congratulations rae- I can't belive that with your painting ability you have only done two kids parties... My first corporate gig scared the hell out of me but... It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. and the first painting of the day, was a frog it was the worst frog I have ever painted, due to nerves. but found once I stopped thinking about where I was it all came good, understand the fear factor. Congratulations

doing the happy dance with you Rae, it's well deserved. This will be the first of many more to come. Make sure you have plenty of business cards with you, cause when people see you in action their going to want to book you too!! Bec Anthony as you may well know LOVES sugar skulls, so get her talking about them in the workshop you do with her. I think one of her recent workshops she did a full face to half body sugar skull, whilst the class were doing their own. She loves to teach what you want to learn so make sure you ask.
Also hope your charging a decent rate for your gig & your not giving away your talent.

I hope I can get lots of pics, but think I'm going to be swamped. Kinda shot my big mouth off that I could do one in around 10 minutes!!! OMG!! So the first hour painting staff is going to be intense!!

....and yes, I will be pestering Becstar to death with advice on sugar skulls, she is the master. How lucky is my timing!!!

Having a great week of firsts! Also did my first private booking today. Leaving my cards with some pics at the fancy dress store paid off today with a last minute request to paint a vamp today. Wooowhoo!! Was on such a lil face painting high afterwards! lol and he gave me a big fat tip too!! That's pretty huge here in Oz, we don't have the same tipping culture as the rest of the world.

Ok, so my big day has come and gone! Phew, was nervous about my first corporate gig at an adults function. Really worried about speed, since I told them I could do 5 sugar skulls in an hour! Was all good though.

In hind sight I could have slowed right down and produced better work. Oh well, all part of my learning process. I got to knock off early as no one else was wanting to get painted, but they still paid me for the time they booked me. (yay) I ended up painting 15 skulls in 3 hours, so was happy I delivered on my promise!

Sometimes it's better NOT to take photo's LOL I came home feeling pretty good about it all......then I looked at the photos I took arrgghhh!! oh well. Good thing I only took a few! They were all really happy though, so that's the main thing.

Only you guys would be interested to see my set up for the night. Was a touch warm down in my lil corner, one poor guy sweated his whole forehead down to his eyebrows by the time I was done, so I just used a baby wipe, and wiped all his forehead off and quickly repainted and got him outa there as quick as I could!



All the guys were VERY particular about what they did and didn't want!! So had to get a little creative on the night. Had 8 skulls for them to choose from, but still made some up on the spot. These two were the best about it all.
