An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
I know, when I first read about this festival, and saw the name of it, I was put off, and I did not apply because "X" said not my bag as a Face Painting Mom, but it is not x rated, it is all the fourtune tellers, vampire, warewolves, haunted house hunters, alien searchers, etc. It was also 150 bucks for one day, though I was pretty sure that there would be a lot of people wanting to be painted and it is being held at our downtown convention center, but I passed because it was just too much for one day and I felt a little iffy about the attendees.
I got an email from them this morning, and they need a face painter, and they offered me a booth for 50 bucks. Anyway, without getting into the "do you believe in that stuff discussion" (I don't) but one of my kids does, and it drives me nuts to talk about (another discussion entirely, and I am not telling her that I am going... ) has anyone painted at one of these things? I am not anticipating children (I really hope there are not any there) It is the 29th, so Halloween is in full swing, so do you all have any suggestions for my board? If you have done one of these, what was most popular? I will have airbrush and glitter tats as well. Should I bring henna?

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
I've seen a book somewhere that had a cool alien face. It was something like this but with black behind it.
The Wolfe brothers books may be good resources too. If you are targeting adults, I would dispense with cheap designs and really focus on more elaborate (and expensive) stuff. Full face tigers, aliens, masks, etc. If they want something cheap, they can get a glitter tattoo. UV paints might work too, especially if you have a black light at your booth they could use to check themselves out.
As for henna, I don't think it would be cost effective since the time it takes would require a big charge for a festival. Just my thoughts.
*edit* This also seems like a great opportunity to get some pictures for your portfolio. Take a camera! (and then post what you do here! I want to see.)

It sounds like fun....... perfect for Halloween and the right price. Awesome how you didnt except before and now they are begging you to be there.
I would stick to you normal scary boy stuff, or custume stuff
Spiderman, Wolverine, (people who would participate will probably be into comics too, but since you are exspecting adults minimize it to masks) skulls, vampires, wolves,
also anything girly. You always want girly not matter then event. GIRLS LOVE TO BE FAIRIES!!! or any eye swirly design!
hope you have fun! let us know how it goes.

That Alien is awesome! I was thinking about putting one on my board anyway, and I need to practice that. I will have my daughter with me to do glitter tats and airbrush (not the one who is into this stuff, thank goodness) so I may look at Faketoos to see if they have some less kid driven stencils. More sinister...doubt that hello kitty and the turtle peace sign will be too big with this crowd!
You are probably right on Mana, when I think about my daughter's friends (she is 19 and into this stuff, like I said, a whole nuther conversation) they are into comics and playing yugioh, and dungons-dragons, all that stuff kind of links together with a lot of people. So all the comic book masks, half face instead of full would be a good idea. I just put Wolverine up on my board, and I have batman, spidey, and the green lantern, so that should do it for the comics.
I expect the vampires, but also kind of wonder if many of them already do thier own makeup, but maybe not. I may go take a look at Krissie's vampire bite again, now that I think about it, I bet that one would go. Wolves, that would be good to brush up on. I did a bunch of them last spring for a theater production, but never put them on my board, so I should adapt that.
Faires...probably true too, and I have tons of eye designs! I will put them up. I bet that the Goth look would be good. I think Bexstar Anthony has a youtube on that...I need to go look again.
Thanks...now my mind is flowing!
I will take pictures, now that I know how to post, maybe I can finally put up a gallery!

Oh man, have you tried the spong bob one? EEEEEEK. It is something else!
Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
I was thinking it would take forever. It even states there next to it that it will take longer. I have enough trouble with their Perry the Platypus.

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
Don't forget to market some things to couples...He could be a full face Vampire and she could have a bite mark on her neck....Zombie couples, werewolf couples etc. Wish I was doing this, I love doing scary stuff for a change!
Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
The couples idea is brilliant! I will have to practice my zombie, I bet that will go over big. It is not my typical birthday party Board, for sure!
I may take a little trip to my local costume shop and see about the vampire teeth and the fairy ears. My Daughter paid 15 bucks at the Rennasaince Festival to get the latex fairy ears and a little bottle of spirt gum. I wonder if they would sell here? And the glue on Vampire teeth...hmmmmm.
Mana, my 15 year old tells people that we are out of sponge bob because she HATES it! I let her get away with it when there is a line. They always pick something else, and say Awwwwwwe! I wont buy that patipus! Do they have Fineus and Ferb? I never thought of those, I bet they are really popular!

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
my daughter is in LOVE!!!! with Perry the playtapus. Phineas and Ferb is her favorite show and she is contently reminding me that she wants a Perry Birthday Cake (Her birthday isn't until March)
She refuses to sleep in her 'big girl' bed because it is Dora and not Phineas and Ferb. She sleeps in her little brothers crib with him.
I think it might be HUGE at my house....not so sure about everyone elses house.
Faketoos doesnt have a phineas and ferb one, just Perry. But I just got a Silohette cutter machine and my vinyl and tape TODAY!!!!! yay for making my own stencils. Cant wait to get home to try it out. (hahaha it is slow at work, I'm at work now )

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
For the fortune tellers you could do crystal balls, tarot cards, stars and moons. Graves Ghosts etc for haunted stuff.
Anyway have a great day painting.

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
Well my mother in law used to be friends, years ago with a member of the Ashtar command reflecting on this old memory what I remember: they are the larges UFO cult group I am aware of. may be others but know about these ones.
So for your aliens you have your human based that travel in light ships, you reptilian based can’t remember what they do. And the greys if I remember correctly they are supposed to be the bad ones. And the Insectoid. I remember something about a Reptilian-Insectoid hybrid if you really want some fun.
Mother in law was friends with a member, I was 16 at the time and use to sit in the agacent room with (my now husband) then boyfriend. Pulling faces at each other
For supernatural
Don’t forget the moth men, your lycanthropes, were creatures i.e. wolves’ tigers, and other such things, the leviathan thing i.e. sea serpent loch ness monster. yetis/big foot/ Sasquatch. For the ghosts you have your banshee, and of course fairy’s.
You might also find that astrology is a big thing you know Aries, Capricorn etc. maybe the Chinese horoscope too. Perhaps some basic rune stones, Oh and animal Totems.
For tarot as I was raised by a tarot reader. and so is my mother in law. I can do it but choose not too. Many of the new decks are themed these days if you want images from the older traditional decks try the swiss 1JJ deck and look at what is called the Major Arcana. Where you have the moon, death, high priestess etc.
And also the whole 2012 thing, don’t know what you can do there.
Henna may work if there is palmistry advertised, as it can be a spiritual thing. Depends iffy but you never know.
I am honestly just brainstorming for ideas on the page, and have met some interesting people in my time

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
Thanks Elaltura! My daughter has been into a lot of those things, and I was not even thinking about the toetems or the Chinese horoscope...that would be a great one, I will have to do something with that! Never heard of Rune stones, but my daughter plays Rune Scape...so it makes sense.
As for the Aliens, I had no idea that they had different types! So, is the green one earlier in this post a reptile or humanoid? I am going to have to look at the different kinds. I am afraid to google it...probably if I got on my daughter's account, it would all come up anyway (maybe that is what I am afraid of!)
So much to learn. I think that for this event I might actually use the special things I come up with. Usally, I brush up on something with a theme, and never do it, like a bee for a honey festival...and end up doing butterflies, dogs, cats...you know.
What an interesting life...I bet it has inspired a lot of painting!

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
If you dare goggle ashtar command (318,000 results) but I have done the sumed it up with the basic types. Most UFO people I have met since (used to live near Parkes clearest skys in Southern hemisphire) are at least aware of the ahstars. but the most popular is the greys.the traditional one posted earlier. most people know it as a blue, grey colour, with the big black eyes etc.
As for Tarrot I have met alot of nice people and some real wierdos. I stopped doing it for money years ago it didn't "feel"right, as the (spiritual) rules technically dictate donation for service as payment. As opposed to set amount. but I have never read one person that wasn't also into astrology on some level who's cards I read.
dabbled in palms curtosy of (gypsy mother in law) and I just love reading about mythological and its creatures/folklore/legends etc why I know about the rest.
Runes probebley wont be big they rarley are, wouldnt worry too much.
Chinese astrology pretty easy if people are into it around you. it is depending on region for slashed ones: Rat/mouse, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep/goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
easy to adapt i.e. call rabbit a hare
as for inspiring painting I love dragons-Europian and chinese, pegasus(my avatar) Pheonix have a few others running in my mind that I will get to one day.
I am sure it will be an interesting day, and not to forget that some people honestley belive that they are vampires- you might get to meet some of those.
but most of the people who attend these things are normal ... well 85%
I think you might find yourself painting more board children tagging along than anything else.
but if you have that one person who sits in a chair asking For a reptilian insectoid hybrid thought you might like to know where it stems from.I havn't thought about those memories for years -I was laughing writting it before - still am.

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
You make me wish that I could paint with you at this event Elantura! Or, maybe just watch you work!
I need to find a sheep/goat and a Rooster Man, I have my work cut out for me.

Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
If we lived closer (the same country) I would swap my Oktoberfest for your X-Fest. I knew nothing about that!
don't stress too much as I suspect you will get mainly the kids. As there usually isn't much for them to do at these things. When I was a kid there wasn't much to do at these events anyway.

Well, this event just got more interesting...the Festival is from 9am to 6pm, and they just invited me to stay until midnight to paint at the Vampires Ball, in the same convention center. This is going to be a very interesting day!
Re: An "X" Fest= supernatural stuff and such
Oh my goodness!! You're gonna be EXHAUSTED! Make sure you take breaks woman! Congrats on getting the gig at a discounted booth rate! I can't wait to see what kind of designs you come up with .
