Help on inquiry from local minor league baseball stadium wanting face painter for next season??
Local minor league baseball stadium wants to meet Wed. to discuss painting next season. 3000 a game is average attendance, but painters would have only approx. 2 hours work a game. Maybe they want me to work with pay per face and give them a percentage or perhaps they want me to pay for space. Don't know how to handle this I've always been paid to be at an event however see potential for making $$$ and using other painters. I know many work sports stadiums (often airbrush) HELLLLP. Also concerns on heat June, July, August when I would be next to the moonbounce my work will be a mess running down the face. How about paint in April and May and Glitter Tattoos for summer? Any ideas or experience out there willing to share??? Thanks

I haven't done sports events yet, so I'm interested to see what you get from all these lovely experienced marvels on here.

Get them to sponsor. If it's an odd time that you would not normally be out on gigs, like through the week, give them a good deal for repetitive business, and specify a tip jar in the contract.
If it is peak hours during the summer, don't shoot yourself in the foot with a low price on Saturday or Sunday. If they want to monopolize, they need to take care of outbidding potential bookings.
Ask for a schedule & a retainer fee, as you will be turning away work for a possible pie in the sky otherwise. Contract!!
Use good quality paint & melting shouldn't be an issue. (I have only had Snaz melt.)
Remind the kids to be careful with it, as there likely won't be time for repairs since everybody has to have one, before there will be seconds...

I use Wolfe & Paradise however find with 98 degree temperatures and Bounce Houses the makeup runs with the sweat. I am currently booked for 2012 summer 6 days a week so 3 of the months will have to have another painter at this gig. Thank You so much for responding, my first time posting and it is great to get other opinions & experiences. This team has 80 home games and it could be quite a revenue source and at the same time it's own info commercial for winter gigs.

Only glitter tattoos DON'T run with sweat...but that is not YOUR concern...it's the child's and the parent's...
I painted at a venue yesterday that had an egg fight...if you join in with a painted face, whaddaya expect??

if they want you to paint, then it is not your concern what happens to it once they leave your chair.
Charge your regular hourly rates, you paint as many as you can in the time given, end of story. You don't need to be concerned with painting "everyone" at an event like this. They pay you hourly for as long as you are there. I have done several hockey games here, sporting events are a lot of fun. Put out a tip jar (you COULD choose to give them a break on rates because of this) because you will get good tips from these. Make up a simplified version of the team's logo and work on your lettering and numbers because they often want a player's name and/or number on their face or "Go (team name)" and this is not the kind of thing we are used to painting usually.

Perry's right--the painting I do for basketball games is so much easier/faster than my regular painting---but it is also so different. Lots of team colors, things that will show up well on the big screen above the court...and never the opposing teams'--after all, who's paying your bills?
