Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Being a big comic book fan, I couldn't wait to get some boys in the chair and do some superhero designs. I can always count on my nephew Jaden, who insists on being Spiderman whenever he comes over.
Next up, were the Beast and Wolverine from the X-Men, who I painted at a street fair earlier this year:
I did some painting at a school last spring, and when the first boy wanted to be Green Lantern, the rest of his friends joined in on the fun. I told them to give me their best "Superhero face" for the picture (and yes, I painted their power rings on their fingers as well
And last but not least, I decided to try my hand at painting myself. It's definitely a different experience turning the brush around and painting my own face with the mirror, but I don't think my first outing (as the Falcon from Marvel Comics) was too bad:)

Wow Corey your superhero are amazing!! Love your linework! The Spidey is really cute and all the designs have a "comic style" that I love!

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
I love love love spidey and the wolverine. I want to add a captain america to my board, or maybe the hulk, and possibly the wolverine mask. Great line work by the way.
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Thanks Eva & Pilareta. Line work has always been a problem for me, as I've had trouble getting the lines to appear as smooth as I've seen with other face painters. I've been using sizes 2 & 4 for outlines and details. It's still a work in progress, but it's something I'm really working on improving.
Thanks for the comment on the "comic style" compliment too. That's something I was specifically shooting for. When the kids (and adults too, lol) leave my table, I don't want them to walk away thinking that they have a mask that "looks like" Wolverine's mask. I want them to walk away thinking that they HAVE Wolverines Mask It really makes a difference.
And Eva, I have a Captain America somewhere. I'll post it when I find it.

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Really nice work!
I especially like The Beast mark - the white hilights really make it!

Awesome - looks like you had fun!
I always blank out on super heros - so the kids always end up with spiderman or batman - these are great!
Thank-you for sharing with us!

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
I had to do my first Ironman yesterday at a festival very hard on squirmy kids too many straight lines. Great Superheros my Daughter and I are fan girls.
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
I love them, all really nice. I like yours the best though! Nice highlights too, really adds to it!
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Way awesome comic book feel! I have a few superheroes, too. I think I get better at them every time I do them, too!

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Love the blue ones...I need to learn which is which, they look great!
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
What blue is that?? It is very bright. I like it! Perry has a nice Thor, hmmm... Maybe a super hero board, boys and girls... something small I can just add when I want. Feeling inspired , thanks Corey.
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
I love the black around spidey's eyes! I've never seen that done, and it really makes the design pop. I love the idea of a mask instead of a full face too! Nice work!
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Wow! Your work is awesome Corey! You've inspired me to learn more comic book characters...I've only done Spidey and Batman so far.
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
I bet the boys just love you. It's probably nice to have a dude painting their faces instead of someone who looks like their moms.
Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
The hilarious thing about the half mask, is that little Jaden wanted to be Spiderman, but told me that he was worried that if he got a full mask, his mother and grandmother wouldn't know it was him and get worried (because afterall, when the "real" Spiderman is wearing his mask, nobody knows who he is).
I told him that I'd do a half mask on him, and that way, his mommy and grandma would still know it was him
I had thickened the black part around the eyes after not being happy with the way that the spiderman mask looked in previous attempts. i couldn't put my finger on why it didn't look right to me. Then I looked at a couple of cartoons and comic books and noticed that some artists made the black part on the eyes thicker, without making the white part match the same shape. That's what made the difference
The blue for the Beast and for Wolverine is mehron blue. It showed up great in the sunlight.
And Eva, a superhero page is a MUST, lol! A common complaint from kids, is that face painting is only for girls becasue of all the flowers, butterflies, princess crowns and rainbows. A couple of pages of superheros in your book (or a panel of Superheros, spiders, dragons and scorpions for those of you who do display boards) will have the boys running toward your table, lol!

I love this job!

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Love Love Love it. And awesome job on yourself! I find painting myself take 10time longer, but then again I dont wiggle while painting and dont mind the wait.
Keep up the awesomeness and cant wait to see more of your work!

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
Corey, I've got to use that Spidey...hope that's okay. The different spacing on the webbing really is cool too....it implies action.
I think your thick and thin lines really "make" the masks. I've just got to be brave enough to do it. You seem to have a knack for knowing where to be thick and where to be thin.
Nice.
D.

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
You're right Manabanana (love that name!) about the time it takes to paint yourself. I thought it was because it was the first time I painted myself, but I guess it does take longer. I know that I could do that Falcon mask on someone else in no more than 3 minutes. It took forever to paint it on myself, lol.
Denise, please feel free to borrow the designs for your own work;)
The different line work actually comes from imitating the style of how the characters are drawn on the comic book page. On the page, the lines are rarely the same thickness, and tend to flare out in places to help give the appearance of depth. The Beast design had thicker lines than I was comfortable with, but it was a good start and improved with practice, as with Wolverine.
Now that I know I can paint myself, I'm looking through my comics to see who I'm going to do next. My superhero selections are about to get a lot bigger;)

Re: Superhero designs + learning to paint myself
P.S. That is SO cute about Jaden worrying his mom and grandmother wouldn't recognize him with a full mask, and he didn't want to worry them! So sweet.
I like how you didn't discourage him or try to talk him into the full mask/talk 'sense' into him. I love that kids have that sense of believing and wonderment. Well handled!
