My employer usually asks us to wear tie dye tees or sometimes she'll request non-specific holiday garb, like "Look Halloween-y".

For birthday parties and community events indoors, I usually just put on a washable black knit top and pants. I avoid white tops so I don't look like the catering staff. For outdoor events in Texas, I just dress cool. It was 107 F yesterday!

I was asked to dress as an elf for Christmas company party gigs but I am 52 and plus size and wouldn't pull off "elf" even as well as Bob Newhart did. lol

So I wore a Renaissance Lady dress I'd made years before on a Simplicity pattern. I used a gold on green cotton print that looks like damask so it's machine washable, but looks rich. For the lace-up vest that was shown in velvet, I used green pinwale corduroy for the same reasons. Then I slap a holly wreath on my head and voila! Christmas Lady!

What do y'all wear for your various gigs?

It really depends the gig. In the summer months, it's skirts & lightweight shirts. It's so hot hear in FL that you just melt. I'll often wear black slacks & a nice top. I've fallen in love w/ maxie dresses. They're so comfy & look great! Around Christmas I'll go as Mrs. Clause if hired as her. I used to clown, but if you note back to HIGH FL HEAT, I try not to do that....

Basically my rules are: clean, professional, not too short or too low cut, etc. You don't want to be flashin' the kiddos or their daddys Very Happy

I am a messy person and keep staining my clothes and throwing them away. One day I was at the bank and I saw a guy with a paint stained jeans, they were clean and even ironed, I felt so much respect for him, and he inspired me to take my old over -all and made myself nice working out fits.

Right now I just wear my normal clothes to gigs - usually black pants and a blue top, and then I paint something small on my face. I'd like to come up with something a little more whimsical though.

Salwar kameez. They are already modest and colorful and it's my actual clothes so no need to purchase or create special. Even when they stain a bit you can rarely tell because they are so heavily patterned. And as a 'goddess sized' lady, I always feel comfortable and well dressed.

I always think about modesty when going to gigs. No low cut shirts or spaghetti strap tank tops. I wear a lot of The Loft tanks. I don't like to be too flashy with my makeup either. I know I'm being looked at and other people maybe future customers so I want them to like me Smile

I usually wear the same jean capris that have paint splatters already on them Wink I've messed up some dressy leggings once with white paint. Then I forgot about washing it till days later. It never came out. affraid

Last night I wore shorts with paint splatters on them. They hit me like bermuda shorts. Never too short! tongue

I'm working on getting a cute Mooseburger or Betty Cash clown costume soon. clown jocolor I've got a little clown routine while face painting. Adds to the entertainment experience Very Happy

I usually wear capris or jeans and a t-shirt with a pretty design on it, like butterflies or dragonflies, but I have had several gigs that I was very under-dressed for and was embarrassed. One was at a hotel in their grand ballroom. It was for a christening party. I did not realize it was a VERY FORMAL event. All the men in tuxedos or very expensive suits and all the women wore ball gowns with diamonds and feathers everywhere! I showed up in nice capris and a decent shirt, but I felt very out of place. Another gig was at a local country club for halloween. Again, everyone was very well-dressed, and I felt like I needed a better uniform. I am not used to such settings and was very unprepared for what to expect. I have no idea what to wear to such parties. The wait staff all wore black slacks and white blouses which looked nice, but I don't want to match the employees either.

I've learned to ask several questions when planning the gig. I always ask where it will be like outside or inside and if it is casual or dressy. I think a good idea would be to bring an extra set of clothes. Then when you walk in with your stuff and see it's fancier then you thought, you can always say, "Ok, I'm going to go get dressed now!" In the winter, I wear a long sleeve T-shirt with a polo shirt on top.. and I always wear bright colors(neon pink T and seafoam green polo.. colors that look good together.) I usually wear dark wash jeans, or khakis, or some other slacks, but never light denim. I also wear polka dot shoes, or neon colored Chuck Taylors, or my tie dye crocs... I also have shoes with bananas on them.

In the summer I rock a bright colored polo shirt(I have like... 20 of them.) and non-denim shorts. I usually wear my crocs or flip flops(too hot for anything else!)

I also try to put my hair up in two buns, because it's a cutesy look, and I wear bright eyeshadow. I wear a name badge, and in cooler months, an apron.

Ryan always wears Bowling shirts with his name embroidered on them, and recently I have also started to wear bowling shirts when I work with him. I have them in pink and white, pink and black, green and white, and blue and black. Very comfy.

If it's a formal event, then I wear a black button up top and black slacks and black shoes. Try to look as neat as possible, so I do my hair nice and wear more normal makeup. None of the fun-bright colors...

I can't wear tie dye because my main competitor in this are has all of their staff wear it. So I try to be a little different... fun, but not clownish. I'm getting custom embroidered polo shirts next week, and that'll be great!

At SickKids, we have to follow the modesty and health & safety rules: No open-toed shoes, must have covered heels, must wear sleeves, no tanks or strappy tops, shorts must be modest and be close to the knee.

Having said that....I wear a black vest with morning coat tails on it (the tails cover me so that if I'm crawling under a Stryker bed, I don't "smile" at anyone from behind when I am bending over). I wear a button up the front shirt, sometimes with a paisley tie. On the bottoms, I wear jeans or extravagant long skirts.

My shoes are either boots or Chuck Taylor Converse High tops.

My face is usually painted.

I look wacky enough to set myself apart from the regular volunteers, yet not as brilliant as the magican hospital clowns. I feel "costumed" so that at a formal event, I am not competing with the party goers, and yet, I am not all black-and-white service personnel. In the summer, at an outdoor event, I wear maxi dresses with a tee shirt underneath.

My two vests are wearing out. I need to replace them.

Happy Painting!

We have a few t-shirts from Vista Print that have pictures of Monsters on it and our business name - says "entertaining little monsters everywhere" and our name/website and phone are also on the back so people can read it while you are bending over etc. Very cute and since my husband and I both are wearing it is more of a uniform. I wear that with dark jeans or capris. I don't like to wear shorts but in FL it is too hot to be outdoors and not wear something shorter, even capris are too much sometimes. When painting I have a few aprons, some are vintage or fun and some I hand painted with my name and business name. I can wipe my brushes on this and my hands as necessary. I am a really messy painter so it helps a ton! I have a few princess costumes and tinker bell but I am getting less requests for those lately.

Artyfaces, you're adorable! I love you Thank you for sharing your pics! Very Happy

I've only been painting for six months, but during the summer for outdoor events I wear modest black shorts with Sketchers shape ups on my feet plus a bright solid color top (usually bright berry pink) with short sleeves and no cleavage visable. Over that I wear a black apron customized with my business name in crystals (since I'm "Bling A Fling"). I pull my long hair back in a ponytail, and wear a pretty shimmer eyeshadow as part of my makeup, then add a blingy ring or bracelet plus blingy teardrop earrings. Smile For indoor events I just swap out the shorts for dark pants.

You can see me at an outdoor festival here, it was about 100* and super humid but with my fan and shade I stayed comfortable even after 8 hours! http://www.blingafling.com/#!about

During cooler months I plan to wear long flowy skirts or dark pants with a solid color bright top plus my apron. I'll wear my hair down but part of the sides pulled back and into a princess twist in the back to keep it out of my face. Again blingy, colorful teardrop earrings and maybe a ring or bracelet to match.

My plan for weddings or formal events is nice black slacks, black flats, a pretty short sleeved solid color blouse in gold or silver or something kinda shimmery, plus my crystal decorated black apron. Evening makeup and blingy but not overdone jewelry.

I want to stick with an artsy-elegant bling image to go with my business name. I love you

ETA: I forgot to mention and ask about nail polish (do you leave nails bare or paint them?). I found a very pretty but tasteful deep eggplant shimmer polish that hides paint VERY well and keeps my hands looking much tidier than bare nails or lighter colors that I normally wear. I keep my nails short but as you all know the paint doesn't discriminate! lol

Tie dye for me, almost always, with a solid colored apron, usually green, if I wear jeans, they are rolled up to below the knee and I wear striped knee socks and Chuck Taylors.
When I do wear a plain colored shirt, I use a bright damask or paisley apron.
I always paint an eye design on myself, or if needed, any "new" design that I don't have a picture of.
Always always ALWAYS big funky earrings for me, whether working or not.

My nails are ALWAYS painted. ALWAYYYSSS. It helps hide any paint that might get under my nails, which can make them look dirty.

I have a girly t-shirt with butterflies appliqued on it, and glittery paint splashed all over, ombre-dyed capris, also with glittery paint and butterflies, bright aqua and melon-striped knee-highs, decorated canvas shoes, and a purple newsboys cap. And I put rainbow-striped baby leg warmers on my arms. I am like a walking rag-bag! lol Got most of it from thrift stores and decorated it myself, but it's a cute ensemble. Definitely casual and kid-party oriented. Were I ever to get a formal gig, I'd probably just go with all black.

I want to do costumes, though. I have a Christmas elf one in the works, and I'd love to do a fairy and a Halloween glam witch for theme parties. I have a pirate costume from my pre-FP days that will work for boy parties once...um, well, once I stop nursing babies! Right now the girls are a little too much for a corset top. Embarassed My husband's a professional costume designer, so I kinda have a thing for costumery - and getting into a bit of a character helps me be more outgoing and charismatic, which helps me in public situations. I'm thinking offering various "characters" - though not clowns, because I'm not that funny - might be a good extra selling point, so eventually hoping to add that as an option.

When I don't wear my clown costume, I wear either all black or a black shirt with gray cropped pants. I always have my name tag on, as well as my business name and "Face Painter Balloon Twister" on my shirts. When I work for someone else I wear a shirt that has just my name and "face painter" on the front in small letters, and "Face Painter Balloon Twister" in giant letters on the back. Even if I'm not twisting, it's good to let people you do other things.

I wear black long pants, a black knit tank top with a black blouse over top - if that isn't appropriate for the event for whatever reason I have a black t-shirt I can easily change out of the blouse for (hence the tank top). Hair is back with a clip and a braid (it's too long now to just have it in a pony tail any longer). I used to start with a black t-shirt till I showed up at one gig and it was very formal - the booker hadn't told any of us working the event and we were all in t-shirts. After that I decided I'd rather start more formal and be able to change to less. At Christmas I have a Santa hat and Elf hat I choose from, Halloween I have a purple hair thing I put in to "dress up" a bit - basically I'm just trying to be neat, but dressed up enough for whatever it is....

I love reading what everyone wears and does! I love you

I really wish I had discovered face painting years earlier, I would LOVE to dress up in something whimsical and magical. But in my mid-40's I'm afraid it would just not look right, you know? I stinks to be a kid trapped inside an aging body! So instead I just add touches here and there and go with my bling theme. Smile

I was thinking about this after posting earlier and remembered that for glitter tat parties I wear a glitter visor and special glitter hoop earrings. I also use my daughter's glitter nail polish which is SO fun. I have a fabulously crazy pair of glitter glasses I found at the dollar store of all places....maybe I'll post a pic and you all can give me an honest opinion if they are too ridiculous or not, lol.

The name tag is a great idea - would you all please share what kind of name tag you wear? Like a badge? Any suggestions on where to get one would be so appreciated! I love you

Back in May I made this shirt for myself, I bought that iron-on stuff that you can print onto at home with your inkjet printer. There is also a small logo on the right front breast. I wear it with black slacks or capris.

It has lasted me quite well - I've worn it every single weekend since May - but the iron-on stuff is starting to crack and peel a little. Last time that I ordered from Vistaprint, I got one of their free tshirts with a small chest logo but I found it faded after just one wash!! So I won't be ordering any of those that I have to pay for! But I did iron the big logo on the back of it so it's doing okay for me, I've started wearing it the last couple weeks since the other one is starting to peel.

I'd like to get some properly printed but the gradient colour that I love in my logo makes it more expensive to get printed than screenprinting solid colours. My original shirt cost me about $12 including the iron-on stuff, and the last one was free (I still had a couple sheets of iron-on stuff left). So I'm good with those for now, and I'll probably just keep doing the iron-on for now. I like the "uniform" look of it, I think it looks fairly professional.

Wishing I had a photo... We have really cute black tees that have the business name and huge bright paint splatters on the back, and our names with a few more splatters on the front. So cute, I've had guests ask if they can buy one!

Cooler months we put a long sleeve tee on hot pink or lime green or more black, and wear trendy jeans. I have yellow chucks, and just picked up a pair of purple tie dye chucks at target on clearance. My hair is either in a pony or down with a flower near the ear. Regular makeup, face paint eye area only.

Warmer months is the same, but black bermudas or gouchos and flip flops. BRIGHT FUN nail polish on fingers and toes. Fun watch and bracelets.

No desire for costumes or clowning. But having a cute look has certainly been good for business I love you
