Snazaroo Petal Sponges Empty Snazaroo Petal Sponges

Post by Psalmbook Sat Jul 30, 2011 9:01 pm

When I 1st started face painting I bought 2 wheels of those Snazaroo Petal Sponges. They ended up in the back of my face painting closet(yes, I do have a full closet of just face painting stuff, but that's for another therapy session Very Happy ). Well, I can't figure out how best to use them. I know many face painters love them & swear by them, but I'm at a loss. They seem too big for the kiddo's faces. Is anyone proficient w/ them & can give me some tips? Thanks!

OMG I LOVELOVELOVELOVE THEM!!!!

Okay, that being said, they aren't too big at all for any face, you just have to adjust how you use your sponges.

Before you start, hold it from the flat sides, and if you need more pressure your index finger can guide the point. I almost never do this but it's an option.

Step one: don't soak them. Barely put the tip in the water. It's a sponge, it soaks it up. It's what it's supposed to do.

Step two: load up only the tip, maybe a pencil tip depth into it.

Step three: practice these---
broad stroke down for fast coverage, especially awesome for arty cakes or split work.
corner point for slightly less coverage, great for tiny eyes, eye lid corners and smaller places
point of the sponge going sideways to make lines, love these!
Corners can make dots with the slightest pressure
If you have one that you want to dedicate to it, white up the side, the teardrop is the perfect "Spiderman" eye shape.
Keep playing...It is amazing the different strokes you can get from it.

Next, ooooo the blending. My fav part of the sponges.
Using your index finger, flip it in your hand so you are now using the round backside. Make sure you always use the sponge of the darker color but there you have it...blend away. Soooo easy!

If you get too much paint on it, that's okay don't rinse it off. Simply let it sit and next time you need it, dip it in water ever so slightly and it reactivates the paint. Saves paint, time and money.

Have I mentioned I love these? I have a set for each of my girls (that's 4 of us) and we all swear by them. For the odd colors, I took the normal round sponges, cut them in half and we use them the same way but the width is not as good. The tear drop ones fit perfectly into arty cakes and such.

Hope this helps. If I think of it I will put up photos later in the week.

Good luck!!!

Also, they come in all black, which I have on order. That way, you can use them for any color and there is no staining afterward.

I find them a bit bulky to work with... but they are a nice density and you can always cut them smaller to work with if you can't get the hang of them.

The colour coding aspect of them is a neat idea...

yeah, that's such a shame, sometimes, I know one adres that sells Loew Cornell Style Stix.. .but that's it.

I wonder if you could 'make' your own petal sponges? I don't really know the size of these petal sponges....

Yeah, such a shame sometimes... I know one adress where you can buy the Style Stix of Lowel Cornell... but that is just about it.

Would it be an option to try to make your own petal sponge? But I don't really know the size of these sponges anyway....

What kind of round sponge did you use for that? An ordinary facepaint sponge?
Because I saw in the video of Denise Cold that the petal sponge is quite big.
Do you have a picture to show of your home made petal sponge, by any chance???? Wink

Just an ordinary facepaintsponge!
I don't have my kit out, because I'm not well enough to paint yet, but when I get it out in a few days, I'll take pics and try it for you!

Oh well, we've got other brushes that are ok!
But sometimes it's a bit hard to see something really great on this forum, knowing it's hard to get!
Of course you can order anything worldwide, but sometimes that's a bit expensive and I don't use paypall or something like that.
But it's ok!
