Snazaroo stencil sponges Empty Snazaroo stencil sponges

Post by Terina Thu Dec 16, 2010 7:32 pm

I just saw the snazaroo sponges that are like little cartoon characters for the first time today. I have never used a face stamp before. I tried looking under the name snazaroo sponge stamps on here but didn't see anything. So, sorry if I am reposting an old question. Are these any good? Or just generic? I was thinking that if they worked then they might be good for birthday parties or really long line work jobs??? Of course, I have tried to really separate myself from the generic "face Painter" so, tell me what you think about them or if anyone has used them? You can see them on sale at sillyfarm. They are pretty reasonable at $3.50 or something. I am trying to figure out how detailed that it would actually look....thanks for feedback in advance!

I haven't got any - but I have thought about it as speed is not my best talent..... but what would you charge to just stamp something on their cheek?
As a kid - I think they would be happy with whatever you gave them - but as a parent you are looking to get your money's worth so I would be thinking I could only charge like $1 or $2....
Guess it would be good for that kid hassling you as you pack up to just give them a really quick something...

Would it be like the butterfly brush? Use it as a quick base to get your shape then adding detail - quick but ultimately a good result?

Are you talking about the Burpo Stamps? They are rubber stamps, NOT sponges. Same as the stamps you can buy in any craft store.

I've never used these. I'm not crazy about quick items like this unless it's something to enhance a design & quickly add too it. I have a snowflake stencil that I love.
Now, something to think about before you pursue quickening your line with stamps:
I'm a pretty fast face painter & can do the majority of my designs in 3-5 minutes. I can do a pretty good butterfly w/ glitter in under 2 minutes & still have it wow people. I don't think I want to get any faster or do small quick designs on cheeks. This is usually something the client requests & it's because they don't want to pay you for more than 2 hours. I'm tired of people wanting 500 kids painted in 2 hours. I've been thinking about it & realized if I dumb down the work too much to accommodate a client the only thing I'll accomplish is cost myself more business & working harder for it. This year I'm going to try & stand my ground & tell clients it's bad business to leave the line stranded 1/2 way through the event & people want good designs. It's more beneficial if they get what they want. Either we'll need multiple face painters or more time or in some cases both. I've spent a lot of time marketing myself for my quality & if someone shows up & sees the same old icky face painting that the general public thinks of, I'm hurting myself & the industry as a whole. When I'm working a line I'm also advertising to my future potential client. If I can't wow them, I won't get hired by them. Just my thoughts Very Happy

I agree with Linda. When I got one of my first festivals, I was asked to train moms and provide supplies for them. I handmade special stencils and taught the moms how to use them. Being told there would be 500 kids to be painted in 3 hours, I also opted to use the stencils to keep the line moving. It was an event at a private school with hundreds of parents that could easily afford to pay for face painting at their Child's party. I didn't have a single parent even want a business card. I never got another gig out of it and it should have been a great night to pick up future clients. Sometimes the speed isn't worth the loss of future clientele.

Very valid point Linda. Thanks for sharing your thoughts I totally agree with you. Faster little designs created by a stamp is not what being a face painter is all about. Giving that wow factor with a design that you have painted free hand is what people will remember & want again. I'm also tired of people wanting way too many kids painted in too short a time. It pains me to have to cut the line because the organisers haven't hired me for long enough. But I'm the one that has to handle the crying child or angry parent. It really is doing a dis-service to all the wonderful talented face painters out there.

I had never thought about it that way - I had thought more about it being a way to get a complex shape into a design quickly (like a snowflake), yes, but more importantly so it looked good and a nice solid identifiable shape. Especially if it were an animal.

Is it because the parents see you using stamps and so negate the artistry of the details? They are more impressed when you paint freehand?

I couldn't agree with this more!
I get soo many jobs because the people honestly think I am the best face painter they have ever seen - not the fastest. I market it as Face Art and not face painting so I'm looking for the wow factor in every face.
If I hired a face painter for my daughters party and they showed up with stamps and started stamping everyone I would not be happy.
Since I have started sticking to my limit per hour and my hourly rate I have been surprised by the amount of people who tried to bargain me down calling me back and booking me at MY price.
I will never say I can do more then 20 kids in 2 hours at a party - that way everyone gets what they want... me and the kids... although perhaps not the client who has to pay my rate... until they see my work and then are always more then happy.
Stick to your guns Linda - your and your art are worth every penny and then some...!

You are right. They are foam, not rubber. I agree with everyone here. There is no replacing your artist abilities with a quick fix.

I have not been face painting for very long but I agree also. I did think about a snowflake stencil, but I couldn't find any and had trouble cutting it. We have about 2 other face painters here in my town and they both use either acrylic paint or the Palmers or walmart face paint and they both use stamps. I have looked at the stamps in the store but something alway stops me from buying them because I just don't want to be thought of as the "same old same old" in anything I do with my face painting here. Even at this early stage in my painting, it stands out and everyone notices it is different. I do cheek art, but I really practice it alot and I am pretty good at freehanding something if I have a picture, but I tell the customer straight up I haven't done it before. I'm not saying I will NEVER use a stencil or a stamp, but right now I am trying to stand out from the crowd.
