Glad to see there is so much 'like' mindedness here & not just with face painting. I feel a minimum of 100 post's before having access to the 'secret cave' by the way love that name great suggestion.

I put both my hands up to being addicted to this forum & clearing all the highlighted posts before I log off. I know for myself I have grown so much as an artist since joining this wonderful group & yes I do feel like I have 'family' & certainly friends here. Without the inspiration that I have felt here, I still would'nt have tried to paint my first fairy and I have with such wonderful encouraging warm comments it sent me into a fairy world of painting more & more. I contribute where I can, I always like to be positive even if giving suggestions on how to, I don't get involved in any strong threads where there seems to be too many hard opinions.

Yes I am definately a chatty one, I'm on here everyday I don't feel my days complete without logging on at least once lol! To me this is my home away from home a place to share & care with like minded souls. I love you

well.... I have just ha a friend call me who comes on here and reads stuff but doesn't have the courage to post yet... to tell me she took offense to the thread.... not happy. I've tried explaining my intentions to her but all she saw was me being overly protective of the forum.... ( which in truth I probably am)... but that's not what I was trying to do. I hate alienating people and this was not my intention at all.
**** If you are reading this thread and have not posted PLEASE do not take offense, we are not trying to exclude anybody from anything. We would just like to know who we are sharing with.
Please come to the introductions thread and let us know you are here! If you see a painting you like PLEASE post a "wow" or a "well done" or even a " I really like this - thanks for sharing!" YOu don't need to have a wealth of advice to hand out here - you don't even need to be a facepainter per say - you might just be a fan of the artform... all are welcome.
I would like to formal appoligize to anyone I might of offended by bringing his subject up.

I have been thinking about this and I do really like the idea.

I think for me I would be more likely to advertise this forum if I still had a place where I would feel safe enough to share things (more business related things). The last thing I want to do it tell my competition where to go to find out everything they need to know about my business.

I think there is soo so much free information available on this forum, which is wonderful (and I doubt that will change much with a change like this). It is just nice to have a wee space with a bit of 'bonus' information, that users that have worked hard, shared and made an effort in the forum, can go.
It would make that area extra exciting too for those newbies who have to work to get in....I am sure, that too, would encourage more people to speak up and share on the forum.

Let me see if I understand this correctly... there are people who have given nothing to this forum and contributed in no way at all... and these people are OFFENDED that there might be a small section of the forum where they don't have instant access??

I am not a rash or unkind person. I take great pains to word all of my posts diplomatically, even those threads in which I disagree. I have re-worded this post about four times in order to "soften" it... and I can't seem to get there, so I'll just close in saying that this general attitude saddens me. Not the disappointment of being excluded which I can understand, but the feeling of ENTITLEMENT. No

I cannot express how deeply discouraging this is to even listen to.

I think that one of the great things about Tash is that she has the guts to post what most of us were already thinking cheers Thank you.
And we all know you are kind hearted and being straight up is an awesome quality. It is a shame your friend feels that way. I was scared s#$%t the first time I posted and I still struggle putting up pics but I always view this forum like a dinner party. It would be weird to go to a party again and again and just lurk on the outskirts of conversations without saying anything. Especially when people here are so supportive. I've learnt years worth of painting in a few short months and if that means I have to post 100 compliments to get to a point where I can access the "Secret Cave" bring it one. There are easily 100 pics here that I could say WOW about!

I completely understand the concept of a private or restricted area. My question is how does having 1000 posts make one eligible? I can go to each thread and write "yes, I agree" or "great job" and rack up 1000 posts. Does that make me more of a professional? I love this forum. I also use private messages to discuss matters I want to keep private. I agree with Shannon about posting only what you want to share.

Thank JBM for your lovely comments - they made me feel so much better about causing a stir.

Yes Angie - Unfortunately you are right....
I don't think she felt entitled to the info here - more that she felt I was trying to stop everyone but a few accessing it, and that I had made the assumption that they were here 'stealing'..
( Kind of like - there's nothing wrong with the way it is - why are you trying to ruin it for the rest of us?)

It was all really warped out of proportion of what I was trying to get at and it's made me believe that maybe it one of those things that only some one in the position can understand.... like how newbies don't really understand they can't take other peoples pics and portray them as their own untill this is explained to them.... so perhaps this issue needed some 'extra' explaining.
My friend is a wonderful person and spends way too much money on workshops and books and things and I wanted her here as part of our group - so I was upset that my post had been interpreted that way and wanted to apologize to any guests or new members out there who perhaps felt the same.

My underline belief is that this forum has grown into most probably the most comprehensive guide to face painting on the net. Metina should be commended everyday for what she has created here, and everyone who participates and contributes deserves credit for what they have achieved to date.

I'm inclined towards the view of don't put anything on the net that you don't want anyone read or see. I do see what your getting at though.
I guess I dont have some of your concerns re competition. I have one other person who paints professionally in my town. We occasionally do a gig together and share stuff. But we both work full time so really only quick chats when we meet shopping or something like. Oue nearest comp is over 300Kms away. I enjoy comenting and WOWing and occasionally sharing something I've done. Camera isn't working at the moment I need a new battery, $70. so only occasional photos sent to me by friends, that's why I'm not taking part in Tag and monthly challenges

Locking a thread for sharing pics? - Page 3 Empty Where's the LIKE button

Post by Denise Cold Thu Jun 16, 2011 1:06 pm

Two cents as a newbie to the forum...

I love it here and now come here nearly everyday but I don't have a high count because of the following: the scrolling through every "awesome" and "wow" is hard on my eyes and makes me dizzy (I can hardly follow the tagging thread because I get the Borne Identity - shakey cam - syndrome.) so I figure I won't add to the clutter (so if I "wow" to your stuff I REALLY, REALLY like it.) cyclops

So, I hope that we don't get a rash of "fabulous" posts just to up the count enough to be in the "Secret Cave" because I'm already wishing we had a "Like" button as it is. There has to be a better way to distinguish.

As far as the watermark/inspiration/stealing stuff...as a new face painter and former graphic artist I understood pretty quickly that I can't use your photos directly but if I change them 10% (which just painting in my own style will probably do) then they are mine to use. I'm actually thrilled when someone can use my stuff in their business and it makes them better. I hope that every time I post a tiger someone isn't going to say "That's a Mark Reid tiger"...grrrrr.

I'm thinking of doing more and more youtube tutorials to establish my expertise and share back. If I didn't have Lisa Joy Young, Sparkling Faces, Marvelous Masks and others...my work would probably stink! I think sharing is invaluable...it makes EVERYONE better. Thank GOODNESS for the internet.

Sorry to vent a little, I'm new to this thread and just read through it. I just hope we don't create some kind of clique. One of the reasons I started face painting is I wanted to be associated with happy people. I figured you can't be a grouch and do this for a living....I'm probably being naive but I hope, in a small way, it is true.

Ha ha! That's what I used to think too, until I realized that my two biggest competitors in this area are both grouches. I guess they've been around long enough to get established as the only face painters. ...needless to say, when people find out there are other alternatives out there, they want the not-grouchy ones! Another good reason for having a closed section like Where's the Beef. Face painters deal with real problems in business just like anyone. We have to tackle frustrations, difficult clients, unethical competition and all manner of other unhappy things. MOST of it is very wonderful, but not all! These are issues that we need to feel safe sharing with one another - other colleagues who have dealt with it before and understand the real-life issues we do sometimes face - without customers or the general public seeing the "unhappy" side of things.

Yeah, I was going to say something about the Beef section because I do like learning from others experiences and if you more experienced people can't share then we all just have to go through it on our own (I don't like hitting my head on a brick wall, thank you!)

I didn't mean that everyone should be a Pollyanna, but I don't see how you can survive in this intimate and personal business without liking people on a very basic level. At my last job I just hated that feeling that I wasn't appreciated...I've gotten more appreciation and "love" in a weekend at the fair than I did in a year at my other job.

Amen, Sista! alien

Also I want to clarify for my perspective and probably the majority here don't mind at all someone using their work as inspiration for their own painting. That's how I am learning to paint! It's the use of the actual photos (like stealing for a website or design menu board) that is the concern I believe. I love you

I just want to say that I personally have refrained from commenting since joining for a couple of reasons. Well, maybe more than a couple but...my time is kind of limited. Sometimes, when I have said something and clicked 'send' it goes into a distant place in the universe and is lost forever. I just can't type it all over again so I became discouraged. Then, early on, I was sort of involved in a discussion that became a little 'heated'. I don't feel it was directed at me personally since many people were commenting, but I decided to shy away from adding anything at that point. I don't like confrontation, even anonymous confrontation. So I thought I'd just keep quiet, appreciate from afar and stay out of trouble.
