Re: My Cheek Art is Weak Art
Isabelle you're brilliant! I'm not going to call it cheek art anymore lol...especially since the smallest designs i do are usually on kids who don't want me near their face so it's on their arm or leg so it's not cheek art anyway lol
I've been working on some little things to have in my pocket just in case...i've been working like crazy on my palm trees ever since Isabelle mentioned them and on Denise's dolphin's. I can do the dolphin in just under 2 minutes now so i'm stoked about that.
Metina I have looked at that book TONS of times lol just haven't bit the bullet yet
Denise you have no idea how happy it makes me that someon in Utah wanted a Red Sox logo! I supposed I should really work on that one but I'm afraid someone will ask me for a yankees logo and i just don't think i could bring myself to paint that lol

Re: My Cheek Art is Weak Art
I was actually happier doing cheek art at first as I've always doodled and hadn't the skills for doing effective full faces - in fact that's what I started with - only doing cheeks - to me it was like drawing on paper.
I'd notice what was commonly asked for (or most watched on tv/talked about by my kids) and then practice drawing the things until comfortable - then put a couple of sheets of 'cheek art' ideas in the front of my 'idea binder' album for the customers to look at.
Some of the most commonly asked for were: skulls, sports teams (here it was the Blue Jays, Chicago Bulls (or they just wanted the bull logo for the animal, not the team) Maple leafs) then popular were the mermaid, princess, rainbow, heart, stars, potato man, clown face, sun face, sad face, tear drops, smiley face, rose, lightning bolt, fireworks, third eye, etc. And there were 'licensed' things like whinny the pooh, ninja turtle, barney, etc.
I found having the binder helpful if I needed to refer to it myself and if the kids had something they wanted me to copy that was always Very helpful (and I'd sometimes copy that thing into my binder too)
Now I'm starting up again I've got a similar setup, but with less ideas offered for the cheeks.
I agree that, depending on the design, they can take longer than a full face, which the customers dont' seem to recognize.

cheek art doesn't really take that long if you use a split cake and keep the designs simple... i do small things all of the time.

colden wrote:The problem I ran into were the "request" cheek art. Like others have said, it takes too long for the money. I'm charging by time. I want to make at least a dollar a minute. If a cheek art takes longer than 2 mins or so I'm cooked.
I think I'm adding a "request surcharge" of $2.00 to match a picture or design...I will assume that they'll change their minds and just get a $5.00 half face design rather than pay for a $5.00 cheek art.
I had requests for Mutant Turtle (off a t-shirt), Boston Red Sox Logo (off a hat), Batman Logo (from hand-drawn picture), ice cream cone (had to wipe it off and start again because it wasn't exactly right)...etc. All of them took too long for the price. One exception was uni-brows and mustaches, all different styles, on some pretty girls (what's up with that?). I only charged them $2.00 and told them they should have a real party so I can make them pretty. They loved them though...except one girl who I'm sure would have loved some blossoms (peer pressure!)
Maybe we as a group should start calling them "mini masterpieces" instead of cheek art and charge $8.00.

here's my mutant turtle.. very quick.
Re: My Cheek Art is Weak Art
Okay so had to try the tropical Island thing. . . [img][/img]
I don't have a pouncer but I saw someone else, can't remember who do it with a yellow and orange back ground so I ended up trying theirs
Next I'm tying the Turtle! Super cool Ashley!

I like that turtle Ashley, I was trying to match the one off his t-shirt and I did great but he was disappointed because I didn't put in the pink tongue...I told him "I'm afraid it will be a gray tongue if I try to put it over the black." Jeez...was picky for a $3.00 design.
Ashley, do you use a split or are you shading with a brush?
Nice tropical Vickery...I like how the island breaks the border, very nice design. I think it might have been my pouncer vignettes. I even made a really tiny tropical (below) one on my eye but I think I saw that somewhere here but it was cool. Would look a lot better on a younger eye.

The "Tropical Eye" is one of the step-by-step designs in the book Your Face or Mine. It is the design shown as a look inside the book on the Forum Shop https://i.servimg.com/u/f84/12/94/23/19/shanno10.jpg

Re: My Cheek Art is Weak Art
Thanks Denise! I really like your stuff with the pouncer. I so need to get one
Shannon I really like how your book is laid out! I bought one Wolfe book so far, and it only gives four steps, but yours makes it look so easy! I will have to put it on my list.

Re: My Cheek Art is Weak Art
Up until this year, i always offered cheek art. and you're all correct, it's time consuming for less pay. I will do it when requested, but i find that most dont ask for what they dont see!
I had a 'name heart' what was pretty popular.. a white banner, about as long as your finger - with the red heart around it, and the name on the white banner.
stars, small butterflies, flowers, balloons, snakes, small spiderman face, yin yan, 8-ball, musical notes, baseballs, basketballs, footballs, ( i never could master the unicorn lol)
