split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
All this talk about split cakes and containers has me all in a dither... *g*
I LOVE them!
Which color combinations do you love AND use most often? I did search... and found a "Favorite splits" post from 2009.. I'm sure there are more... but, I haven't seen any "Like/Use" posts of late... mostly posts about making them... not what the favorite splits are.. (if I missed the split post - please forgive me for duplicating)
When I get that card reader thing that someone recommended, I'll share my few splits with you.
I have the basics -
small splits:
red/pink/white - roses 'n such
red/pink/metallic pink/white - roses/etc.
red/pink/yellow (thin)/white/metallic white - for roses... makes a lovely peace rose color
purple/pink/white
dk blue/metallic blue/light blue/white - dolphins/water/stuff
thin black/red/orange/yellow/white - flames ... why I have FOUR of these, I'll never know.... well.. I made one for 1/2 brush, another for 1" brushes, another for sponge brushes, and the last... well.. I haven't a clue. erm....
blue metallic/pink metallic/white metallic - girlie stuff (made two short ones... 1 - 1/2 brushes, 1- 1" brushes
purple/berry wine/metallic pink/pink/orange/yellow - girlie stuff
berry wine/old gold)which I may take out)/metallic pink/pink/metallic white/white - girlie stuff
thin brown/med green/light green/yellow - one inch leaves 'n such
thin brown/med green/metallic green/light green for 1/2 inch leaves/etc.
I seem to have gotten carried away again and made two other blue blends...
thin black/medium blue/metallic blue/light blue/white - dunno what it's for...
dark blue/2 strips of light blue/white - again... doh!
(I'll probably re-use the extra blues for something else at a later date)
I have a purchased large & small neon rainbow.... I hope to make my own after my next purchase!
I really like the edging effect that heather (I think that's her name... made the arty cakes?) uses... so, for some of my splits I took the last two colors and made 1 inch splits to use as an edge for the split cakes.
If the split cakes didn't have a dark edge, I made a small 2 color split with the last color and a complimentary color to use as an edging. I like it!!!
I am going to make a few more color combo's along as I purchase new paint....
Several of my splits are on the short side because of my limited paint supply... works for now... it allows me to test color combo's... and retain some paint for solid applications.
Also, I found that I don't like putting split paints to the end of the containers... so, all of mine (except for one) have a half inch of space on each end. That way I get maximum load. (that's my story - anyway... *g*)
I'm going to make a brown split tonight that Lauri(sp?) made - and that will be my last until the next order of paints...
Brown/gold/yellow/white/metallic white - to use for snakes/antlers/other brown stuff.. *L*
Thanks!!!!
I LOVE them!

Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
oh.. most of mine are for 1" applications. I thought that I'd make wider splits as my paint supply grew.. and I found what splits worked for me.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
My fav container to use is the empty palette from obsessive compulsive cosmetics... I don't use them a whole lot, but my fav is one that has a green gradient with a small strip of purple on the dark end. Purdy leaves.
Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
I'm so glad you asked this, 'cause as a "newbie", I have been wondering which colors I want to get for splits. But I just blew my budget for the next 2 months, 'cause I ordered the Paradise split palette(sp?) and the "Illusions"mag. So I won't be able to make any splits till May or June. (Sniffsniff) but the info will be very helpful, come time to spend more.(i'm so excited for it all to come!)(Will be haunting the post office)

I made this one all with snaz except for the light blue, light pink and light purple are DFX. I loved how soft the colors were.

Namanda, taht is so pretty. I really like those colors. So - you can mix brands of paint, and they all work ok? I mean, do they wear the same, and do they activate the same?

The Tropical Rainbow is DEFINATELY my alltime fave...
But I also like my red white and blue one for patriotic designs.

JBax, I LOVE that container!
I found one similar - but it had a double row .... I posted it in a post here, but - haven't a clue as to where I put it!
laugh
I wondered how the container worked.. if it was deep/long/wide enough.

Mine too! I've been using it for ages but was nervous about not seeing anyone else using it in their kits! Wasn't sure if the plastic would react long term (though have had Wolfe in them without problem for going on 2 years now). Have you tried something in the long thin section? I'm debating putting a black/white split in there for lining.....

Yep! It's small I know, but for the most part I'm doing cheek art or eye splashes - it suits a 1/2" brush for me but I've also used a 1".

Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
I just made a whole bunch. Mine are stored in pill containers, they have seven slots in a row and are easy to pick up and handle. Just the right width for a one inch brush. Have had some for over a year and they are still holding up great.
The recent splits I made are:
mini neon
dfx metallic red (rose), thin white and dfx light green--love this combo!
metallic red, snaz sparkle orange, thin white strip, light green
snaz metallic purple, snaz sparkle turquoise, dfx light green, dfx sea green, snaz metallic blue--love this one!
snaz sparkle orange, white, dfx yellow, metallic red--love this!
snaz sparkle red, metallic red, snaz metallic purple
dfx sea green, dfx light green, dfx yellow, snaz green
snaz blue, snaz sparkle turquoise, dfx yellow, snaz sparkle orange
If I can figure out how to upload to my sons laptop, I will load pics. My laptop is away with the geek squad!

Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
My new love is the Tag Unicorn cake... no piccies yet but the teal and purple combo has some serious pop. I have found the purple can stick around if left on all day.... ( I let my daughter sleep with a butterfly on her arm and it was there for two days regardless of baths!)
I'm inspired to grab some Tag and make up my own..... but the ones I seem to really love have a combo of neons or metalics and opaques so I would need to get a whole heap o mess around with.... very expensive mucking around.
My man just made a rose split for me with paradise white, snaz sparkle pink and paradise red. Can't believe I have lasted this long without a rose split...lol
I need to make/get a new split in greens as I use this quite a lot for snakes and sometimes for leaves.
I find the more I use splits the less I want to use my other paints.
The Tag pearl rainbow split has a wonderfully saturated metalic colour.
I find myself trying to steal just the yellow and orange form the rainbow for tigers and just the blue and green to do eye designs.... so I think it would be awesome to make a whole heap of splits from Tag Pearls.....
has anyone done this? Or should I be the first?

Lemme answer a few as well as this one.
The paint in it worked fine, but I didn't use Snaz (which probably would not be so good).
The sections are really shallow, like what you'd see in eyeshadow or a lip gloss well. So, if you are a frequent-splitter, this probably isn't for you. To help visualize: one of the small DFX mini splits will fit into two wells.
I've not put anything in the long skinny, brush-holder spot. I find my excess water runs off into that spot, and that works out well for me.
I talked about it in my first youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1GxCzLHKKg
Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
peacock arty brush cake is my all time favorite!! followed by fire and tattoo rose arty cakes. hmmmm...i do love wings as well;)
as the creator of the original split cake meant to be used with a flat brush...it's difficult to see my imitators recognized as favorites...when they just copy the color combinations it took me a very long time to perfect. it took me almost a year to get fire and peacock to where they are now;)
so for those of you that don't know...arty brush cakes sold through www.sillyfarm.com were the original face painting splitcake
i'm the one that came up with all the
original designs created with split cakes for face painting...butterflies, flowers, crowns, fire, peacock feathers, rose, tattoo rose,...etc
in fact i taught donna dewberry how to use the arty brush cakes!! she will be teaching at fabaic this year;)
so...sorry if my frustration is showing...but, i hate seeing so many profit from heather's and mine hard work...with out recognition, and with out having to put in the hard work we did. just coping our color combos and giving them new names really doesn't compare
thanks for understanding, and letting me vent;) i'm really tired of one other certain brand claiming they are the first, or creator...ect...shame on them!!!

Um... I didn't read where anyone claimed that in this thread... unless I missed it? I thought we were just sharing our favorite combos? both purchased and personally made... Just throwing that out there.

split cake history
i didn't say they did say that in this thread...??!!
and, i'm simply pointing out that 90% of the color combinations made by other companies are copied from arty brush cakes
so...for those new to face painting...that love a color combo from another company...they may like to know the history...
as i said...i'm venting...i'm sorry if i offended you or anyone else.!! i humbly as for your forgiveness if i offeneded you!! that was not my intent;)
i was at a jam in orange county, cal last night....and, i had another painter tell me that the new face painters have no idea about the history of split cakes...they see them as all the same
i'm sharing
please understand that i am asked daily for step by steps of my designs...by people that are using other brands.
they have no idea that they are using a different brand...they just know that i am seen as a person that knows how to use split cakes well. i teach...yes. and, almost all of the instructors for other brands in the USA were my students at one time...hmmm??
I love teaching!!!! but, i do teach to sell product...?? other instructors teach so they can set up other classes and travel...like the wolfes and mark. i don't love traveling as much as some other instructors. but, i know i give 150.00% when i teach a class. i just taught at faba in vegas where i was told i was one of the most praised instructors. i don't expect my students to use only my brand...but, i think it's fair if people know the history....???
so...again...sharing your favorite color combos is great...but, maybe you would like to know where the color combo came from?
2 other companies make peacock...it took me a year to get the colors exactly how they are...all they did was copy our combination using their brand??? ummmmmmm?
wolfe, diamond and tag are all made from the same company in china...there isn't a lot of difference in the make up in and of itself
the creativity, hard work and effort that went into designing the color combos and face painting designs should be the difference.??? ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. looks like heather and i are the ones that spent the time and energy in that area?
once again...i'm sorry if anyone is offended by my voicing my feelings...and i humbly as for your forgiveness if you are offeneded!
thank you!
and a special thank you to all of those that support heather, myself and arty brush cakes
i can't tell you how much i appreciate you recognizing our efforts and hard work!!
i love teaching and meeting you...and, look forward to seeing you at fabaic!

Re: split cakes - what's your favorite color combinations?
Oh, I wasn't offended, I was just pointing out that some of these splits are ones that people come up with and make in their own homes out of left over paint. I was trying to give THEM some credit for THEIR creativity. I'm sorry for your frustrations on how your idea was adopted by other companies, but it's my understanding that that's just the nature of this, and really, ANY business, and this particular thread isn't the appropriate place to be venting about it... there's a subforum called "Where's the Beef" for that kind of thing.
Again, This is just my honest opinion, and I'm just throwing it out there...
*awkward pause*
Sooo.... anyone else have any other favorite split cake combos?

Rebecca- I can totally understand your frustration. I am wondering if your cakes are sold to other distributors? Maybe available with out the exorbitant shipping charges to get it up here to Canada? Because they ARE beautiful, and I would love to get some, but at this point, I don't want to pay the cost of paints over again in shipping charges. I know-I'm dreaming, right? lol!
