Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I've never used stick on jewels and I know that Snaz makes them. I was thinking about just getting some from oriental trading company. Is there anything special about the jewels that are getting stuck on the face? ...any reason to buy the ones made by Snaz or a face paint company?
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I about some they were not marketed for the body, but they were super cheap and cute so I gave them a try had them on all day, not only me but my niece and her lil friend too...and absolutley no problem. I would use those type again.
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I also use the cheap things and sometimes use waterbased mastix to be sure they stay on. Never had any problems.

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I buy my jewels from Michael's. I like the ones without a sticker on the back. I put a small dab of glitter tattoo glue on the area I want the gen & stick it on with tweezers. I'm still not good at this, but plan to practice till I can make nice jeweled designs for the birthday girls. I only put the glue over the paint. The paint works as a barrier to the skin & then gem pops off easily when it needs to come off but won't fall off like those self sticking gems.
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I don't bother... I have some of the Snaz ones, and some others I've managed to acquire, that have adhesive on them. I don't like them at all. I used to use them at birthdays and always, ALWAYS had the girls coming back for replacements as they fall off.
I do occasionally use bindis which are a bit easier. The gems are too heavy to stay in place.
I have also use the shaped rhinestone decorations (rows of stones on strings of adhesive) for special jobs... they work okay.
But to me the cost of the materials and the time wasted fiddling with them isn't worth the bother.

After Marcela's Mask class I became a Jewel Junkie! A serious addict. I created over 400 little jewel packages. Yeah, yeah, a nut, I know.
Anyway, I lay down a thin line of any of the adhesive meant for the skin. Just makes me feel better. I love the jewels that have clusters of jewels in them.
I still seem to be a goober on posting photos here, but there are a few photos at http://www.funfacepainting.com/classprincessfaces.html

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I tend to like bindis, but depending on brand....let's just say many products directly from India are not exactly 'safety first', but I've actually never had a problem. I also have swarovski crystals and dollar store crystals. I use those with body glue or eyelash glue. I don't use them often mostly due to time and fussyness factor but have a little bead thing I carry them in and have thousands!
Linda! A great secret for picking up and placing diamonds that is pretty much free rather than buying a tool (which you can btw, they sell them for doing nail art and picking up the little diamonds) Use a birthday candle. You read correctly...
when you press the candle to the glittery part, it sticks just enough to very carefully and super precisely place the diamond, BUT it lets go when you press to the body glue. Perfect placement every time! I have a wedding photoshoot on monday and will be using this technique!

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Gina I have the ones from oriental trading company, they seems to work fine, I made sure that I wore one for about six hours before I used them on kids, the only problem was that I got called into the restaurant cause we were busy and I had to work with a star gem between my eyes!!!

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
LOL Lauri! I'm guessing people just thought you were Indian. Which ones exactly? It's hard to tell how big they really are just by the close-up pictures.
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Gina, you can get those at walmart. Michaels has them too, you should be able to use a 40% coupon.
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
I never was able to get the pre-made stick on gems to work for me. It seemed everytime I used them, they fell off within 2 minutes and I had an angry parent or a sad kid on my hands making my line even more ominous. I also hated the hassle of getting that tiny little peice of paper off the backs of those gems, sometimes, I just couldn't get it! Plus, gluing gems directly onto the face then and there can get messy and the kid may not like the feel or smell of the wet glue.
What I do instead, is I buy normal gems from whatever craft store I happen to be in and I take them home and sit down with a roll of wax paper and a bottle of clown nose glue and glue the gems to the wax paper in rows according to color and shape. These can later be simply peeled off and placed on the skin and they will STAY. You can even remove them and put them back on if you don't like the initial placement and they won't fall off.
They adhere MUCH better than the pre-made stick on gems and are much less hassle. Plus, you can keep the gems organized much better so you can find the exact color and shape/size you're looking for quickly, and that's essential in a business where time is literally $$.
I usually cut the wax paper with the gems on it into sheets according to color or shape (depending on my mood for making that particular batch), and carry them in a smallish clear plastic container with a lid so they are visible to the canvases and passersby. It's a fact... people are attracted to shiny, sparkley stuff, so I don't keep them hidden, lol

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Like those little candy dots! love that Idea Punky. I never use jewels because the little bag falls down to the bottom of my kit and I forget about it. But on the paper strip... Thanks!
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Great idea Punky, I have glitter tattoo glue and also eye lash glue, I wonder if it works with this type of glue too.
btw Punky, I love your name makes me smile.

Organizing Jewels for Face and Body Painting
Here is how I orgainize my jewels. I just took these shots last week for a Princess class workbook.
Each little bag has a set of jewels, with about 5 pieces. I sort all of the jewels by color. Then, I put them on rings.

Making Jewels / Gem Bags for Face and Body Painting
HHmmmm, I thought I posted these photos today. But ...
Anyway, I use tons of jewel clusters. I cut them up, combine them with other jewels, and make sets which I put in tiny little bags. One bag per face. There are about 5 pieces per bag.

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Yup, geekophile, exactly like the candy dots! I never though of it that way, lol. And thanks Maggie, that comment makes me smile. And yes, the glue you use for eyelashes and glitter tats is essentially the same stuff, it should work just fine.

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Wow, Lilly!
I like the idea of prepackaging a "set" that could go with the design... like one big, and a number of small ones.

Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
In California we have regulations about using only lead free compliant gems on children's clothing but face painters seem to be willing to use the cheapest made in china or india buy in bulk gems on children. I highly recommend not using cheap craft gems but going only with lead free products to put on people's skin.
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Yikes! I never thought about the lead in them. Thank you Loretta for the info. How do you know if they're lead free?
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Wow, didn't know they had lead. I got mine from Michael's.
Re: Total Newbie Question about stick-on jewels
Hmm... I never thought of that either... the most recent batch of gems I bought came from Paula Biggio from Laugh it Up Clownstuff... she sells big bags of gems with no stickies the back, I think I'll shoot ehr an e-mail to see if they are lead-free... otherwise, I may very well scrap my big batch of gems that I made a couple weeks ago... :/
