Black Paint Empty Black Paint

Post by Elise Thu Jan 06, 2011 3:03 am

My snazaroo black has melted, so I need to buy a black face paint that is really easy for lines etc. The only problem is I live in Australia and so would be buying offline because the only facepaint i can seem to acess in art shops and places is Snazaroo. Does anybody have a black paint they reccomend from an online retailer? Preferably one that doesn't stain too much as I have a 4 split cakes from tag (blue/pink/rainbow/green) that all leave trace stains.

I love Wolfe & DFx black for line work but it does stain slightly (as much as the Tag greens). I use Paradise black on kids because it doesn't seem to stain. The trade off with Paradise is that it does contain a strong coconut/pina colada type smell when you first open it. You can lesson the smell by leaving the top off for a while prior to using it.
I will leave it to an Australian to recommend online retailers. =)

I use a couple of retailers .. depending on what I'm buying.
I predominantly use Paradise and DFX, both of these I can get from here..
http://www.alwayswickedart.com.au/
you need to call Robyn or send an email to order with her as she hasn't set up her shoping basket thingy last time I checked.
Cheapest DFX comes from MOZentertainment...
Spectrum, like Synni so nicely mentioned above is mainly TAG from memory.
Hmmm your in queensland so I would recomend Always wicked art as she's on the sunshine coast and will cost you minimal in postage.
I have MANY retailers that I have used all over Australia....
if you can't find what you are looking for PM me and I'll pass on a whole heap of links.
BTW if you are looking for a great black for lines and details most people rekon Wolfe is the best but stains the worst... DFX is very similar with less staining, Tag is also ok, I prefer paradise... it's creamier and takes some getting used to if your used to snaz, but it's a real makeup and washes off much better then wolfe....
I think you will find TAG the cheapest in Australia, closely followed by DFX.
Just my opinion... you will get a lot of those around here! Wink

Ooops I forgot to mention.... all paints will melt in the heat... some more then others... snaz is the worst for this.... although my paradise certainly don't like direct sunlight ever.... just so you know, you can fridge it or let it dry out in a cool dry place and once it sets again, it should be fine....

in the summertime, my dark coloured Snaz melts all the time (it is REALLY humid here)... once it cools off, it's perfectly fine again. It's trickier to use when it's squishy, but you can still use it even when it's like that (a lot less water and it takes a little more fussing). Some people bring two of those colours and keep one in a cooler and rotate them as needed. If you like the Snaz for it's lack of staining, you can work around this. Just my two cents though, I don't use anything but Snaz, so I couldn't speak on any of the others.

Perhaps, but Wolfe, DFX and Tag are almost the exact same formulations. And since she's in Australia, Tag would probably be the cheapest because it's made there.

I personally love Paradise Black for blending and bases and occasionally for lines, but most of the time for lines I use DFX black. You can get REALLY nice sharp, clean lines with it; just a matter of adding the right amount of water so it's not too drippy or too dry.

I use Tag black and very rarely have problems with staining. Often it is the only of the tag colours that comes of easily.
I think with black I usually am painting over another colour already so its not much of a problem. I do however use Snaz black if I am painting a black base.

I love my Wolfe black. That said, it does leave trace stains, but I still use it anyway. I do use Paradise around the eyes as it seems to wash off easier.

I got to use some paints from LooneyBin that Nick and Brian Wolfe had and really liked them. They are basically the same as Wolfe/Tag, but I think I read somewhere that they manufacture it Australia? If they shipped to the US and it didn't cost me a fortune, I would buy from them =).

Yup Yup Jumpers - same as TAG.
Infact the other day I bought some facepaintsaustralia neons to try and the shades are exactly the same as my neon DFX cake... EXCEPT there was no label at all on it. I could buy a whole heap and put Face Art by Tash on them and sell them if I wanted.... but at $40 for a little sample size roll of those interconnecting pots - white, black pink, blue, orange, green - with a little pot of glitter attached..is a bit expensive I rekon.
Its' the first time I have come across completely unbranded face paints that are the same quality as DFX or Tag.

Being in Aussie you can't go wrong getting TAG it compares equal to Wolfe/Dfx & is so much cheaper. As Tash said you'd probably be better off going with alwayswickedart, Robyn's great. It should give you cheaper postage too.

Paints do melt in hot humid weather don't worry just pop them in the freezer when you get home from your gig. And they'll be firm in 5-10mins.

Thankyou all, I think I will just get the TAG then for linework and try to save my Snaz for bases etc. The only thing is that I have even left it in the fridge overnight and still was half soggy and very very quickly it went completely mushy again. But ill definitely try again. Have you ever had problems with people complaining about any paint staining the skin ?

Amy Grigg is another supplier in Australia and Robyn from AlwaysWickedArt.Spectrum. Kool4Kats in Adelaide.
A lot of suppliers seem to be going out of DFX because of the cost of iimporting it into Australia
tag dfx and wolfe are made in the same factory in China to slighty different specifications.
Just tell people that some colours may linger on skin. Most people don't have a problem with this.
Tash I have also used facepaintsaustralia paints I think they also came from the same factory in China as the others If I remember corectly.

I don't usually put them in the fridge... I'd just leave it in a cool, DRY place with the lid off for a while. It's probably gotten over saturated as well as over heated.

Does anybody know the general difference in postage between spectrum and always wicked art? My previous TAG purchase was from the TAG website and postage was about AU$8

Hi Elise,
I have ordered from Robyn at always wicked art many times. She doesn't list postage/shipping because she lives across the road from the post office and only charges you exactly what it costs her to mail it to you.
A couple of times she has forgotten to charge me anything for postage....shhhhh
Most of the time she sends it to me overnight delivery and i have never paid more then $10 for express.
You can call her and ask her, but it will depend on what/ how much you are ordering...
Also the last couple of times I have ordered she has been out of DFX,
I spoke to the DFX Australian supplier she runs MOZentertainment, she said they have had problems with people reselling the DFX and TAG they don't want these products sold side by side, so if a retailer is selling Tag they aren't going to supply them with DFX anymore......... so if it's DFX you are looking for I wouldn't use Always wicked art I would use Mozentertainment... they are cheaper anyway even if it's only by 50cents here and there!
What I would love is one place to buy everything i need..... yeah yeah still dreaming!

Snaz black is the only black I use in my working kit (the one I paint children with). Kryolan sucks for line work, and I won't subject people to Wolfe - meaning parents trying to get it off and it staining clothes.

Yes, in the summer the Snaz gets gooey, but I just add more water to get it working. When it is past working I take out a fresh dry cake which I always carry for these situations and keep working. Once the cakes dry out they are fine.

Don't put in the fridge, just leave out on the counter to dry. OR, Freeze it. The fridge is too humid for it to dry out.

DFX black stains horribly in my opinion, I say go with Paradise, I've never had any problems with it. Smile I cannot bring myself to use DFX on kids even though it does handle very easily when it comes to line work. Still not worth it to me though.

I only use snaz for bases cause I do lots of kids but do use tag white. I can recommend Amy Grigg she is quick with postage and seems reasonable but I've been to busy to shop around and have no needed to. I've had some really hot days in the past weeks - yesterday it was 30 deg celsius - I have an area in the back of my gazebo that does not get direct sunlight and that is where I position my table with my paints. I have also started taking soft icepacks like you use for sports injuries and I keep my paints on top of them and it seems to keep them cool. The black is definitely the worst and is mushy by the end of the day but I just freeze it and it comes back to life. There is another thread on this topic in here somewhere cause I used Shannon's advice to add more water which seems counterintuitive but works a treat.
