pics of everyones' menu boards
Hi all! I'm just getting started and trying to come up with my kit, etc... I'd love to see pics and hear ideas from everyone on what they use for menu boards and also what size mirrors you all use. Thanks! I love this board!!

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
Mines not very impressive... It's a marker board easel w/ photos taped to it.... I'm rather embarrassed w/ it, but it does the job, it's what I had & free is nice sometimes
I also don't use a board very often.

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
this is me with ONE of my two menu banners... they are small outdoor banners from vistaprint with some grommets in the corners from Michael's.
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
You look so cute Perry!
Here are mine. Pictured are actually two different boards. I take either one or the other, depending on how many kids I have to paint.

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
Linda what do you use instead of the board? I kind of like the idea of not being locked in to doing a picture in a specific way so at the moment I've gone with a chalkboard with the words written kinda funky, like tiger written in tiger stripes, rainbow in rainbow txt etc. It also works cause I can change prices depending on venue if its ppf or write FREE if contracted.
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
I can change mine depending on the situation. More complicated designs for small parties and simpler stuff for big carnivals...
I hang it from a portable clothing rack with clear plastic shower curtain hooks. The only challenge is windy days! I use it without the rack when in someone's house. I can usually find a place to hang it from like a fireplace or something. When I have a theme party, I can paint up samples in the morning, make cards and post them the same day! Very convenient.
This is one of those pocket banners that school teachers use. I got it on Amazon.com for about $20. I print out 4 x 6 photos and cut them down a bit to fit the pockets.

Magna, I have almost that same set-up for festivals, even the same exact dress rack! My hanging menu is a bit different. Yours looks wonderful, very clean and organized.
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
There are some cool ideas here. I like the pocket banner. Very cool. I love how Shannon's set up has all the info to read. I'm the kind of parent that would read it all too. I was thinking today how lucky I am to have access to the wisdom of seasoned face painters like her today when I handed out a postcard at the toy shop and the lady said "oh yeah you could come and paint for us next week at our xmas party. It would be free but it would be good marketing" And I thought mmmm FREE IS NOT FREE!!
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
Wow! She'd really let you go work for them for FREE!?!?!?!!! You're so lucky!!!

Mine is a markerboard easel.. but it's kind of heavy. Most Office Supply stores have easels for sale that are lighter. I also have the pocket chart & like it except on windy days.
LOL! Free is free!
I had a lady that called me 3 times to work 2 events for free & this was her reasoning: I love your work! Your site is beautiful & I MUST have YOU! If you work for this family wrestling event FOR FREE, not even tips, I will give YOU free booth space for an event in the mall(also free & no tips aloud). This was at a mall that NO ONE shops at any more & is frequented by gangstas! Wow, I felt "privileged" she wanted me so bad!
It took everything in my being NOT to laugh up front & say, "Good luck with that!"

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
Wow. She was offering to compensate you for one free gig by allowing you to work another free gig? That's a first!
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
Here is a pic of my new banner and menu board its all the same.. the banner with photo sheets attached with commercial double sided tape.. the banner place put the sheets on after they did the banner.. i made a pvc frame and i can hang it or attach the back piece and stand it up..similar to a sandwich board..
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
JBM, I do something similar to what you do. In my gallery is an example of the word menu I use instead of pictures on my board. (I have expanded it a bit since then.) I got the idea from Ashley Picken in this thread:
http://www.facepaintforum.com/face-painting-kit-f5/choice-board-cards-t2957.htm My daughter and I often paint together and we have very different styles, so we can't really use pictures.
However, now on the backside of my board I did put up some pictures with the words "Hall of Fame" across the top. If a child can't decide or really wants to see some pictures, I tell them there are some samples on the back. But I always say that every face is different and unique so it might not look exactly the same as the picture! LOL
Terntam, I found some plastic mirrors at the dollar store that are shaped like apples. I got a package of three for $1.25, the middle-sized one is about the size of a hand mirror. They are cute and don't break when dropped.

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
I, like Linda do not use my board often. I have a book I made for parties, I only take the board when I'm bringing the whole kit and kaboodle... so it needs some serious updating. I don't worry about the design being exactly the same... each design is as unique as the face it is painted on.
One of these days I'm going to take a decent photo of it...lol...
It's a piece of plywood with black speaker material covering it ( stapled on) then I just lamenate everything and use velcro sticky dots. It allows me to change everything as I want it. I did have problems with kids taking them off but we put a little sign and now they leave them where they are... although in this pic one of them was coming off because a parent had attempted to put it back, badly. They never fall off by themselves, and the board is heavy enough for it not blow over but I have an easel I put it on anyway - it looks better.

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
thanks everyone!! keep 'em coming! I know I want something where I can switch the pics out and i can write the prices somewhere on it either in a slot next to the pictures or something. wow!! too bad there is so much thought that has to go into everything! LOL I'd rather just worry about the painting, as I'm also worried about that! I'm somewhat of a worry wart! LOL I really want to do this so I just need to jump in and get it all done and get over my fears! How did you all get over your fears?!

Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
My 1st board was one of those science project display boards with velcro for the pics. I printed business name from my printer & used a lot of scrapbooking techniques to enhance it. It's a great way to do things when you're 1st starting off & not a big investment.

Tappy, or Barb (what's your actual name?) Where did you get the photo sleeves?

Shannon, I'm curious about the 3 panel display boards... are they cardboard? Something else? Where did you get them?
I've been using poster board with photos taped to them. I attach them to the canopy for shows. For private parties I use a notebook but I'd rather set up some kind of sturdy 3-panel display.
Re: pics of everyones' menu boards
yes, where did you get the photo sleeves???? that is what I was thinking of using also. On some type of board probably, as I don't know what I would hang a banner on. I don't have a tent or anything yet.

Mine is a fabric covered table top display unit - there is also a header to it that I don't use. I actually was given it by a charity I used to work for as they had changed their logo and colours so had all new stuff - the other side is blue fabric. It has a carrying case that I can also put my wooden A-frame sign in which makes it a lot easier to transport. It is NOT light and not great in wind! I think they cost around $600-1000 new for a similar thing - they are much lighter made now.
I also have another display that is on a three panel foam core display board - the type they sell for science projects at Staples or Office Depot. I covered it in velcro friendly fabric (NOT easy to find!) using spray adhesive and colour-coordinated gaffer tape and use it for my "Fast Faces" display.

This is the cheapest I've found for one of those:
