Elementary School PTO Bazaar Empty Elementary School PTO Bazaar

Post by fluttersby Mon Nov 29, 2010 2:48 pm

I just went in and paid for a table at the holiday PTO bazaar for one of the elementary schools here. The lady in charge said they hadn't had a face painter before but she thinks it would be a great idea because they do get quite a few kids. In fact, they are going to have "daycare" services during the bazaar. I am really hoping this goes well. The fee was not bad ($25), so I think I should be able to make a little money. I am still in the "getting my name out there" stage, and this will be a great opportunity. I'm glad I have alot of time off this week for practicing holdiay stuff, although I'll probably still do butterflies and tigers. Unfortunately, I ordered business cards, but they will not be here yet. Any words of advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like a great start!
If you have a printer at home, it may be worth trying to print yourself off a few business cards or even some little A5 sheets detailing your business. People WILL ask for it. I often do gigs out of my area and I don't want to promote there so I hide my cards and they ALWAYS ask for them.
I honestly wouldn't worry about having a lot of xmas designs, I find kids never want them.
I'm sure it will go very well for you!
Good luck!

I did not expect my business cards to be in, since I ordered them from Vista Print and got the SLOW mailing, I did not expect them for at least another week. I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find them in my mailbox yesterday afternoon. That was really all I felt that I was lacking for this event and they came. Now I just hope there are lots of kids, and even if not, that there is a chance to give out lots of cards.

Glad your cards came in! Vistaprint can surprise us sometimes with FAST shipping! I got so used to stuff being shipped quickly that I was terribly impatient the last two times when they actually took the quoted amount of time to arrive. Laughing

Sounds like you are all set! I agree, don't go to much trouble making up seasonal designs. The kids will ask for your typical stuff like butterflies and spiderman. Have FUN!

Just wanted to write a quick note to say how things went. This was a craft bazaar, so I really didn't expect to make much money, I just want exposure at the moment. There were so many vendors, and they placed me in the hallway where people really didn't want to stop for long enough to have their kids' faces painted. That and they want to look around first before they stop for something like face painting. I did well, although for this event for me doing well was making my booth fee back and passing out several business cards, which I did. It seems that grandparents are very interested in hiring a face painter for their grandchildren's parties. I did not paint one full face, it was all very small cheek art, and alot of pointsettias on little girls' cheeks. The funniest thing though, was three older women wanted me to do a party for them where I would paint obscene things (?) on them and their friends. They did not clarify what they wanted but I can only imagine. I quickly told them no I would not. I thought they were joking, but they were very serious. Go figure. My biggest mistake that I always make is forgetting to take pictures, and I really need to since I basically have none.

I was very embarrassed because these women were just saying all of this loudly and in front of everyone else. I am a Christian and I want to maintain my standards and I believe that will get me farther than compromise. The funny thing was other people came and asked me if three older women ever came back and got their faces painted because they were across the building telling everyone they were going to do it. Anyway I had fun, and I am beginning to see what is going to work around here vs what will not. I actually think cheek art here will be more popular than anything else--so far at least.

Good for you. I hope you get some bookings for your efforts. I've also been noticing more requests for cheek art than full faces.
