price confusion Empty price confusion

Post by betherfly Fri Apr 03, 2015 2:59 pm

YYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! i have my first festival next saturday. i've looked over the forum on prices and am a bit confused.
most folks say cheek-$4, half face-$6, and full face-$8.

what i'm confused about is what constitutes as cheek art and what constitutes half-face? i understand a cute, little lady bug would be cheek art. what if it's slightly more elaborate: cute, little lady bug on a big flower at the end of a rainbow that stretches across the face? or a snake that slithers around half the face(it's super fast, but takes up a good amount of space on the face)?
Thank you face painting friends! flower

Hi there!

How you define what counts as what, depends on how you WANT to define things. I say anything bigger than the cheek that isn't a full face, counts as my half face- and I don't really do cheek art, instead my lowest tier designs are 1-eye designs. You can create a 4th tier for those in between things if you want.

There's no intergalactic face painting laws on how this should go, so just try how you think things should be, and the customers will eventually clue you in on the best way to do things (:

Coverage isn't necessarily the deciding factor.
Some small art takes as long, or longer than a full face design, for me. It depends upon details.

(and also, how much I like to paint a specific design)

If I don't really like painting a design, but it's kind of popular, I don't take it off the menu. I price it high enough that when people ask for it, and they do! I won't mind painting it as much.

Also, pricing is regional....
If you go into your Profile, above, and type in your general location, you can hear from your local artists to help guide you. It is easier for them to find you to invite you to jams, to try new paints, look at kit set ups, and share shipping on face paint orders.

Happy Painting!

I like to say that a painting is like a pizza, it all depends on how many toppings you want.

Welcome to the Forum, alucy0210!
Come on over to the "Introductions" thread to introduce yourself. If you go into your Profile, above, and type in your general location, you may get more specific, and local help, as a lot of questions regarding pricing structure is regional.

If you would like advice, you must be more specific when you ask for advice. Read some of the older threads regarding best brushes, insurance, best paint brands, one strokes, base blenders, cosmetic glitter, sponges, etc.

Happy Painting!

Thank you all! I'm super excited and completely nervous. Just a few days to go! I have tons of sponges, so i'll only use one per customer, and i added face painting to my performer's insurance. flower

Some people up-sell gems, glitter, lipstick, sealer.....I Include them in my highest price designs. So even if it is an $8. mask, add lipstick, blush, lashes (painted on) and even maybe a little glitter gel and it’s a $12. design. You can have a picture side-by-side to show the difference.

You could refer to it as the DELUXE version.

On my design board I have colored dots. Then I have a pricing sign indicating what each color costs. Some designs have multiple dots because I can do a more deluxe version for the higher price and a more simple version for the lower price. It is easy to adjust the pricing by updating the pricing sign without having to change my display board.

Pretty much what I do. Though i like your idea about multiple dots for different versions. Do you find lots of people get confused with that though? Or do you just answer their question and they get it? Also which version to do display? The pricey one or the simpler one?

There are always a few people who are clueless but I don't think better signage would help them. The pictures displayed vary. But I have at least some that are full face, some partial (one side or mask) and some that are small (one-eye version). The pricing sign has info on the differences.

I'll ask in the presence of the paying adult "Do you want the basic mask for $8 or the bling version with jewels for $10?" or "Which version of that do you want? Full face, mask, or one-eye?"

It works for me.

Yes i get that you have a wide variety, but my question was when you have TWO Colored dots on ONE photo which photo do you display for that ONE? Do you display the bling version or the basic when you have 2 price dots on one photo? OR do you some times display the basic with some designs, and some times the bling with others?

I have a variety.

Sometimes I display the bling version. Sometimes I display the simple version. I have one example with 3 versions.

The top dot is the version displayed. The other dots are for alternate versions. So if the picture is the bling mask, the top dot will correspond to the higher price. I honestly don't think anyone looks that closely.

I do the dots too and keep it two different price ranges - small and large.  This is the first board I have ever done so it does need updating and I would like to add a 3rd set of options.

Hello, I price mine based on the time it takes to complete the design rather than the size! I have an A frame where one side is £3 and the other side £4. Basic quick things like a dalmation, quick princess mask, wolverine etc are on the £3 side and more complicated things like my profile picture, sugar skulls, elsa etc are on the £4 side. (If the pitch was expensive they're £4 and £5)

I'm a bit naughty in that my most popular ones are always on the expensive side (Elsa, spidey, butterfly) because little kids are very persuasive Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes and most of what I paint comes from that side/ price range.
